Do I look okay?

part 2 of the blind date au

It’s never going to make sense to him why the 400 building is all the way out past the football field, when everything else is on top of the hill. Nor will it make sense why he has to walk back and forth between them all afternoon. 

He’s just passing the bleachers when he hears a loud sniffle and stops in his tracks. He waits, and there’s another one, followed by a little whimpering sob. 

He draws in a deep breath and calls softly, “Hello?”

The noises abruptly stop. He sighs, screwing up his courage by remembering how he wishes someone had done this for him back when he’d needed it, and backtracks so he can walk under the bleachers. “You okay?” he asks, and then he sees her and freezes.

There are eight hundred students at this school; most of them have never paid him any mind, and he’s returned the favor.

And so, of course, it’s Anna, crying as if her heart has been broken.

“Are you okay?” he asks, worried.

She sniffles again. “Do I look okay?”

“Christopher?” 

He blinked, startled. “Kristoff.”

Anna’s cheeks reddened. “Sorry. I-- I don’t know why I keep saying the wrong thing. Just-- nervous, I guess.”

He immediately regretted correcting her; he’d let her go on calling him the wrong name forever if it meant she wouldn’t be casting her eyes downward and twisting her hands in her lap. “It’s okay, really,” he said quickly. “I’m nervous, too.

She dared to glance shyly up at him from beneath her lashes, her eyes wide and hopeful and so very, very blue. “Really?”

“Really.”

A little over a quarter of the way through editing. Definitely the highlight so far are is a heart-to-heart between little Padawans Elsa and Anna. Runner up is definitely Anna’s first un-simulated flight.

Ulf is a great character, I do not like Ulf

Some musings on one of the characters from The Next Unknown By @themarshmallowattack

(Full disclaimer I have not gone back to read the chapter(s) Ulf first appears oops)

At first, while reading I was like: “why, whhhhhyyy does Ulf treat her this way, what the hell it’s awful TT__TT”. But after actually taking a moment to sit with it, I believe I understand what’s happening.

It feels like Ulf treats Elsa how she feels she should be treated... where Anna is concerned. Ulf is an indication that Elsa still wrestles with self loathing and guilt (hardly a stretch, after all it is Elsa). Looking back to the moment she made Ulf (as far as I can recollect), the strongest emotions in that moment were triggered by being unable to reach Anna; after all this time, it was one more instance Elsa couldn’t be there for Anna when she needed it. Another moment when she’d failed her, during potentially the most fatal of circumstances.

Elsa essentially created a version of herself in wolf form for Anna; one utterly devoted to her protection and possessing an empathy so strong it appears to feel Anna’s emotions as she does. One also filled with all of Elsa’s self loathing, now turned back on her as hate.

It’s as though Ulf looks at Elsa the way Elsa, in her worst moments, feels Anna should look at her— with wariness, distrust, always assuming Elsa will hurt her...

It’s one thing to see Elsa internalize and feel those things about herself, but it is so different to have that directed back at her from an outside source— one that doesn’t view (isn’t capable of viewing?) her or her circumstances with any compassion. Add to that it’s part of her magic, a sentient being she created, and it’s indifferent to her at best, downright hostile towards her at worst?

Not to mention, as far as I can remember/tell, Elsa herself doesn’t seem to realize the origins of Ulf’s behavior? She just accepts it because, well of course she deserves to be treated that way.

Nightmare | Request by Anon As brave as little Anna can be, there are times when nightmares get the best of her. Luckily for her, Elsa’s bed is only a few quick strides away and, despite the elder’s inherent cold touch, her embrace couldn’t be warmer and more comforting on nights like this.

“You’ll be fine, Anna. I promise…” | Inspired​ by The Sky Is Awake (@themarshmallowattack) ​ Anna’s habit of camping right outside of her older sister’s door doesn’t go unnoticed by Elsa, then again, how could it? The little one’s one-sided conversations are always filling the air up until she succumbs to exhaustion. Little by little, the elder finds herself unable to keep her walls up. Her sister needs her, after all. What started with the act of setting a blanket over her sister’s shivering frame, eventually evolved into Elsa somehow finding the physical strength to carry the redhead and offer her a much better alternative than the cold hardwood floors.

In which Anna learns a secret, Kristoff is on his way home and Elsa makes no appearance for what I think is the first time (let’s pretend she’s destressing over a mug of hot chocolate)

This chapter is a milestone to me. I wasn’t sure if I’d reach this point because of the fic’s scale. Could I really see such a long story to the end? We’re not at the end yet, but the events of this chapter have definitely been a landmark in the back of my mind from the start. 

And we made it here! Thank you for sticking with the ride so far! 🙇🏻‍♀️

If Kristoff had any sense at all, he would never leave Arendelle again. Except for ice-harvesting trips. And maybe the next time Anna decided to drag him and Elsa to picnics in the countryside, or lingonberry-picking in Snoob.

On second thought, he supposed he could also be convinced to squeeze into another scratchy suit and attend some neighbouring nation’s baron’s son’s first birthday, because becoming the queen still hadn’t taught Anna that such events were optional. She’d eat too much food, chat with too many people, and make him spin her too many times on the dance floor.

On the carriage ride home, she’d ask if he’d had a good time and giggle when he said no in his flattest tone. You know you don’t have to force yourself to come, she’d say in a singsong voice.

He would glance at her, massaging her feet with her clumsily undone hair falling in waves over her freckled shoulders, and remain silent. Then she’d spend the rest of the ride pestering him to share his thoughts, and he’d have to regale her with reindeer facts because it wasn’t like he could say aloud that Grand Pabbie’s magic paled next to the sorcery of her smile.

If he had any sense at all, he’d never leave her side again.

He could get used to this sensation of returning to her, though.

It's no wonder Anna wants me to get rid of this. It's revolting, Hans frowned as he stroked his beard. I look like my father, and that's a worst nightmare come true. His eyes shifted in the mirror to get a partial glimpse of the bundled mass on the bed. Maybe that's why she moved away from me. I'd be terrified too if I woke up right next to a face like this....

Ten months of writing...

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been writing The White Hun for more than three-quarters of a year already. From a single crazy idea to unite the world of Frozen with a Central Asian/Mongolian monomyth, it has grown from pretty much a crackfic to one of the most extensive stories I have ever written. Beginning with a simple premise: “who really built the Great Dam of Arendelle?” At its core, it’s a story of historical wrongs and systemic injustice, set against a backdrop of a society thrown into upheaval. And though I’ve done my best to stay true to canon in terms of characterisation and plot points, I have not shied away from depicting the consequences of such conflict in their full extent. The White Hun can be found on FFN. I am also in the process of uploading onto AO3, with minor edits and additional author notes. I want to thank the readers who have shared their thoughts, both in reviews as well as in private messaging and public forums on Discord. A special shoutout to @themarshmallowattack and @lianthuss, two wonderful authors who have kept me motivated and inspired through their messages and reviews. Saying this story has Elsamaren content is like saying vodka has alcohol content. Found on FFN and AO3. On another note, I have been contemplating what to do with this blog. It seems weird to post chapter-by-chapter story updates when the chapters in question were uploaded months ago. However, I do plan to post supplemental notes on each chapter detailing my writing process and inspiration, as well as the material that went into each chapter. I hate long and obtrusive author notes with a vengeance, and hence have kept my notes on FFN and AO3 relatively brief. Posting behind-the-scenes notes here seems to be a good compromise.
