Fic writer and sometimes-vidder. Longtime sci-fi/fantasy nerd. I take lots of pictures in my garden. I took up figure skating at age 30, which probably says something about me, but I don't know what.

I think part of what makes farscape fuck so severely is that as things get more and more insane, the weight of those decisions have an emotional impact that feels real and reasonable. Crichton has several v understandable psychotic breaks. Aeryn isolates herself. Chiana sabotages her relationships. Fuck scorpius defs has a personality disorder They are all so mentally ill as a consequence of their circumstances and its v reasonable, in a way that some scifi is afraid of letting their characters explore fully because of a need for moral purity

truly the most american thing is Big Drink. more than late stage capitalism, more than an unparalleled cultural focus on individualism, more than 9/11 jokes
what binds all americans together culturally is Big Drink
and you might be saying "is this fat shaming" or "but mayor bloomberg outlawed Big Drink in nyc" or "gays are so annoying about their iced coffee" or some other dumb comment but no open your minds, Big Drink isn't just sugary or caffeinated beverages
every day i see one of you hydration bitches (affectionate) on the train with a water bottle so big a toddler could drown in it. that too is Big Drink. we literally invented a bigger beer can (tall boy) in wisconsin in the 60s in the service of Big Drink
anyway i never feel more american then when i have Big Drink in my hands
#I like ice cold water so I have a regular drinking glass and refill it with water and ice regularly#I think I generally fill it to about 6-8 oz which is as much as I can drink before it gets unpleasantly warm#no ice for other drinks though! I don't want watered down soft drinks/tea/whatever#I do probably drink 1.5 or more liters of liquid per day#just not as Big Drinks

The writers of Deep Space Nine ran with the idea that Starfleet was far more diverse than shown ("For production reasons, Starfleet on TV is a predominantly human organization, but we presume that it's a far more heterogenous outfit that we can normally afford to show." - Ronald D. Moore) and tried to reflect this beyond their budget by referencing all the strange aliens serving in Starfleet off-screen, like Vilix'pran, the budding, winged alien lieutenant somewhere on the station. Meanwhile Voyager ran with the idea that Starfleet is overwhelmingly human ("When the people around you are all one way and you're not, you can't help feeling like there's something wrong with you." "Voyager isn't just one way. We've got Bajorans, Vulcans, a Talaxian -" "And one hundred and forty humans.") And most of the rest of Star Trek holds to the "Starfleet is predominately human in a literal way" idea but with more of a "humans...Are Explorers" vibe
#I was disappointed that Lower Decks was mostly human and human-with-some-makeup species#characters like that trainer who could pull herself into three parts and juggle them were a great use of the medium#I would've liked one of the Warp Drive Five to be non-bipedal or non-oxygen breathing or something

Wait hang on. Do ~christian kids ACTUALLY believe that santa is real? I thought that was just in movies??? Like, is "being shocked to learn santa was your parents" a real thing that really actually really happens in real life??? I thought it was like opening the door and setting out an extra cup of wine on passover. Obviously the prophet Elijah isn't actually going to walk in and take a sip. Obviously "santa" is your parents playing pretend. You're all just doing a bit, right???
#I figured it out at age 7 when I woke up earlier than parents and saw no presents under the tree (and then mom sneaking out all embarrassed)#but I don't think I was surprised#soon after I told a friend who was a year or so younger than me and everyone got mad at me for...not lying :(

summer is the worst time of year and I do not want to do things in hot humid air. may I please have some cooler air? I can’t find a label on me that says “store in a cool, dry place” but I’m sure it’s there somewhere.
#this is the time of year where I try to leave my air conditioned house as little as possible#the damned BUGS don't help#if this heat were at least too hot for mosquitoes to live that would be okay

#I've been lucky enough to avoid needing much interaction with Uber/Lyft and AirBnB#I only occasionally subscribe to a streaming service (like just as long as new season of [show] is on) and never had cable#but I think where this is going to hit me is the meal delivery service I use (CookUnity)#I already see more of the meal options costing a couple $ extra than there used to be#$110 for 8 meals (works out to 16 for me because half of one is plenty) is comparable to grocery prices#so I guess I'll still keep using it until they double the price or something but :(#I have chronic diseases and not having to cook saves SO much energy for the rest of life and work#plus it avoids having every meal be the same thing for days on end because recipes are designed for 4-6 people

Why are you using chatgpt to get through college. Why are you spending so much time and money on something just to be functionally illiterate and have zero new skills at the end of it all. Literally shooting yourself in the foot. If you want to waste thirty grand you can always just buy a sportscar.

genuinely irritated about the prevalence of brother-sister character designs where the brother has a huge nose and the sister has a tiny nose. 1) why are you a coward who hates the joy and beauty of women with big noses 2) have you looked at any real human siblings lately 3) why do you appear to think the nose is a secondary sex characteristic

A federal judge says it was illegal for the Trump administration to cancel several hundred research grants issued by the National Institutes of Health.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge ruled Monday it was illegal for the Trump administration to cancel several hundred research grants, adding that the cuts raise serious questions about racial discrimination.
U.S. District Judge William Young in Massachusetts said the administration’s process was “arbitrary and capricious” and that it did not follow long-held government rules and standards when it abruptly canceled grants deemed to focus on gender identity or diversity, equity and inclusion.
#I appreciate this but also want to see what will actually happen to the canceled grants#because I have a bad feeling it's going to be “nothing”#but yes - Reagan appointee saying this is impressive
