The girl’s soft smile and a sincere apology made him answer with a smile, too. It was a good start, he thought, there could be some grumpy fella behind the desk, and he would be forced to apologize for the very fact that he stepped inside. The girl, on the contrary, seemed very friendly and understanding.
“I… uhm..,“ only when he opened his mouth Morris realized that he didn’t prepare a speech, and he probably should, it was the police station, after all, people liked the precision in here. “My name is Morris Poole, I’m from New York and I came to your city just today… I hoped to find a place to stay and a job… I’m a musician. But I’m out of money, and… before you people arrest me for sleeping on the sidewalk I came here myself. I would appreciate some help.“
Poole sent the girl another soft smile hoping that he didn’t sound like a lunatic. The travel bag and the case, where his horn slept all these days, confirmed his words, as well as the stubble on his face and his decent but worn clothes. “By the way, can you tell me what city it is? I don’t remember seeing any signs when I entered.” Probably just missed them, though, he was so tired, details became blurred and unimportant.

You give out kindness, you usually receive kindness. Except when you found those few in the world who just couldn’t see a nice day and instead just saw the sun blinding their eyes. Her expression remains pleasant, nodding as he describes his situation.
“Alright. I’ve got some brochures here with our motels or shelters, whichever you are comfortable with and can afford.” She thumbs through a few folders before pulling out a few pamphlets. “And job posting. Most of them are online but the library does have free computers. I can give you directions to there if you’d like?” She gives a pause, allowing him to collect and look over the papers if needed. “There are quite a few bars in this city, and a few of them with musical venues.” There’s another sympathetic look from her, though it shifted slightly, looking a bit more concerned. She leans a bit further over the desk towards him, her voice a bit lower.
“This city, Inner City, it’s a good place for those who don’t fit in anywhere else. A lot of good people call this place home. I’ve lived here my whole life, but I know it can be a bit, a bit of a transition for some people to get used to things here. It isn’t really a place for close minded people. I hope you’re open minded, Mr. Poole.”
Fresh start nowhere

“That’s fair. I can see that happening in most situations. However you could have gotten away with calling me by name since I’ve seen you around the station before.” If she hadn’t seen him around though she would have been wary. “How are you this evening?”
He gives the slightest of a smile. “Well I’m glad to see you’re observant. I have been working with Karnus for some time after all.” Though this was the first time they’ve actually had a moment to really introduce one another officially. The male gets into a bit more of a relaxed pose. “Good. And yourself?”

“Very new” She cooed, a glimmer in her eyes as she gave him her full attention while inspecting everything her little eyes could see. What was he? Just a big talking bear…Or more. Hm, sounds like he wasn’t a bear all the time. Werebear perhaps or something that followed it’s rules. Maybe even just a shape shifter. She took a heavy gulp as she pondered over the fact that he could be were and while it didn’t instill fear like a werewolf it still did enough. Though maybe if she could conjure her worries and fears over this beast she could take a step towards her main fear. “Really? Could you, uh, give me more info on what I am to expect here? You know, for my own safety and others“ She had heard this city was weird, but never really understood how…Not until now at least.
His large head leans down towards her, nostrils flaring as he gets a good whiff of her scent before it’s exhaled out again. She didn’t seem a threat, but as protecting this city was part of his occupation and duty, he had to make sure.
“You just stumbled in here I assume?” The city itself usually did a pretty good job at keeping out those with ill intent, but that first line of defense only worked so well. “I would think you could understand why a city like this would need protection and caution towards newcomers.” There was no need for further warning or threats from him when he was already in his bear form.
But he did appreciate her concern of the safety of others. If it was a true concern. “This place acts as a safe-haven for those who would otherwise be hunted for what they are. As long as they can follow the rules set here, they get protection.”

Here’s my piece for drawtober ‘monster mash’. It’s my bf’s OC Isaac who had a bad run in with a monster I’ll be probably posting later. Still unsure if I’m actually going to ink this one but I like how it turned out. The prompt was 'scaled’.

Oh lord it talked, it talked! Saaleha had to take a slow breath in for this one because wow, what the fuck, just a talking bear right out in the open? What next! “Okay…Wow. The heeeeck?” She could’t help but voice some of her concerns out loud before just sitting in the grass in front of the bear. Out of bear arms reach but still close enough to chat. “So like, they just let you…Do this bear thing…In public?” She looked so confused, baffled and yet, enthralled.
His demeanor changes at her surprised reaction. “You..must be new to this city.” Head rising, he watches her sit down. “But seems like a talking bear isn’t entirely out of your scope of believability since you aren’t off and running.”
“Usually I save the ‘bear thing for work. But lately there hasn’t been much need for it.” He gives the equivalent of a bear shrug. “So thought it would be nice to stretch out on one of the cooler days this week.” But now he was wondering if it was the wisest thing to do. “Probably best to tell you that here in the city, a talking bear isn’t going to be the strangest thing you’ve seen.”

“Xeha, but yes. I am his mate.” She looked up at the large scarred man. She too held no judgement. “I’m assuming you’re Regis.”
“Yes. I just don’t tend to ask people who they are by name. It tends to put them on the defensive, wondering how I know their name. So I tend to go with associations if I know them.” He gives a small nod. “I am.”

Saaleha stared at the bear in terror, the whispers going crazy in her ears. It felt like the world was spinning just a little too fast, the sun a little too bright and the world around her a little too loud. She wondered if this was what being overstimulated felt like. Why was there a bear…in city park? No, no, no, this couldn’t be just any bear, right? she wouldn’t hear the whispers if they were…Plus the bear was all too big. “Hey, I uh, don’t know the normal rules for big bears but uh…I’m pretty sure you can’t be here! Like, the zoo may come.” Yep, just try and talk to the bear who may not be a normal bear. Then again, what else was she to do? Walk away? No way hosay! We meet our fears head on and politely ask them to leave the park!
The bear makes perfect eye contact with her before it starts speaking. Because that’s a perfectly normal thing for large bears to do.
“If you’re worried about my safety, you don’t need to be. I work on the police force here.” His claws flash in the fading light as they adjust and cross in front of him. “But if you’re worried about other’s safety, I hope that answer fills that question too.”
His large head lowers down onto his paws, bronze eyes watching the other though if need be he could spring to his full height. But it was always better to look more relaxed than he was in these situations. Not many people could find themselves able to calm down around an agitated looking bear. So even though he was a bit annoyed to being bothered, preventing a panic because he was found by an outsider lazing around like this was a bigger priority.

“So you are Karnus’ mate?” The large, broad, and scarred man glances down at the Nort, no judgment in his voice, only stating what he figured.

The dire bear gives a chuff in their direction. Just taking a whiff of whatever they were and whatever they might want. He just wanted to relax on this nice day. Wasn’t too hot and was a bit windy. It was his day off and he was a bit lackadaisical because of it. Maybe not everyone was used to seeing a bear eight feet to the shoulder lazing about in the evening sun in a city park.
