One of hundreds of letters sent to CBS after “Abyssinia Henry” aired 50 years ago today on March 18th, 1975. Many of them were from young children.
Last summer I started working on a project with these letters where I tracked down and spoke to many of the children who wrote them (now in their 60s). The project is on hold until I finish this school year, but I leaving cryptic messages on the answering machines of America's boomers resulted in some of the best conversations I've ever had. I'll keep you updated. I chose to share this image as the letter writer is anonymous.

US postage stamp, 1989 “Steamboats” Scott #2405 - #2409
Issued: March 3, 1989 - New Orleans, Louisiana Quantity: 40,996,800 Designer: Richard Schlecht Printed By: Bureau of Engraving and Printing (Lithographed and engraved)
The five boats depicted on these stamps were all from the Eastern part of the country, but represented five different geographical areas. Schlect created his initial paintings of the stamps at actual stamp size, to show the USPS what the final stamps would look like. He had done this before, and would normally then repaint the images at a larger size. However, this time the general manager of the Stamps Division was so impressed with the spontaneous quality the design and lettering had, he insisted they use these images for the stamps. Schlect worried that the stamps might not print well from such a small original source. So they made a compromise. He recreated the designs at twice the size in two separate pieces. He made ink drawings on mylar plastic laid over a wash painting for the background.

faq
who are you ?
i'm an amateur collector of stamps and first day covers! my main is @frekfrekfrek. yes this is my awesome autism special interest. smile
why do you run this blog ?
i love identifying stamps irl, i love learning about stamps and their history and i wanna share my enthusiasm for philately because it's a hobby that doesn't have a huge presence online! also im away from my collection for a few months n i miss getting to look at my stamps every day
what do you collect ?
pretty much anything i can get my hands on, but i have a huge soft spot for stamps that are old / historical, gimmicky, have unusual formats, or interesting stories behind them
how do you id stamps like that?
this is partly experience, partly by using online databases (especially colnect, which is an awesome site). i think stamp identification (and philately in general) are pretty easy to get started with!
what are the stamps in your profile pic & banner?
these are 2 stamps that i own!
my profile pic is from the "peace and commerce" series of french definitives, issued in 1876.
my banner is a souvenir sheet of the turtle dove stamp from the emirate of fujairah (now part of the UAE), which was issued in 1970 for the world expo happening that year in osaka! one unsourced fun fact that i haven't been able to verify is that this is technically an illegal stamp, because the agency that issued had just had their contract with the fujairah post office terminated.
