Magical healing that doesn't immediately or fully mend everything, that can only hasten or bolster the body's own ability heal, that lends a bit of power and a nudge in the right direction, or tips the scales just enough in their favour, slowing bleeding or dampening pain or fighting infection or replenishing strength, but still leaves the slow remaining process of time being the best healer to truly complete the job.

small appreciation post for collapsing while still conscious
ok as much as i love a good faint im also a huge sucker for when a character collapses but is still conscious, maybe just dizzy or weak
stumbling or tripping on something and falling to their knees, too weak to stand up again
weak from fever or low blood sugar and failing to get out of a chair, lying on their back or side while the dizziness subsides (i actually had a fic planned for this at one point)
slumping into a chair because they cant stand anymore
reaching out to a table or wall for support and sliding to the floor (!!!)
sitting on the floor already but they slump to the side out of exhaustion
that thing where they throw their arm across their eyes out of exhaustion or dizziness (honestly one of my favorites)
there are probably a lot more im missing rn so feel free to add on!!

I love it when whumpee shows up at caretakers doorstep so exhausted they pass out as soon as they know they're safe. Now caretaker sits by their bedside trying to guess all the worst case things that could have happened until whumpee wakes up and explains themselves.

A character, usually very reserved and self-contained, has their filter/self-control eroded by fever or illness or bloodloss or exposure and starts pleading and clinging to their companions for the comfort and contact they've craved all along but never before dared to openly express- which shocks their friends who had never realised cuddles and caresses were something the incapacitated character wanted and are heartbroken to think they've been depriving them of them; they hesitantly but wholeheartedly oblige with all the warm contact they can provide.

a character tending to someone who’s been brainwashed to hate him. all he wants to do is cradle them in his arms and swear revenge on the brainwashers. instead they stare at him with hatred and fury and he has to be so, so careful.
“this is your room. the door only locks from the inside, so you can keep me out.” (it hurts to be so close and yet so far)
“I’m leaving the tray outside the door. Let me know if you want me to prove it’s not drugged.” (please please believe me I would never do anything to hurt you)
“you’re free to leave anytime you want.” (if they get you again, they could erase the last of your sanity, the remainder of what makes you *you.* stay where I can protect you. stay with me. heal.)

I think the best mind control for whump is the type that doesn’t hurt. Hell, make it feel good even; a relaxing numbness over a once panicking mind, a warm pride at each fulfilled order. Control that makes you want to obey just as much as it forces you to.
Make the control sweet, tempting. Make them want to obey; don’t just break their will, make it submit to you. It’ll make their absolute horror and disgust at their actions all the sharper once they break free.
It’s easy to know you fought when you have the memory of the pain to remind you. It’s easier to justify defeat at the hands of overwhelming force and pain, the crushing of the will. But how can Whumpee look at the soft seduction of their will, the almost pleasant corruption of their morals, and believe that they truly tried their best to resist it. They remember how it felt. They remember liking it. And that memory makes one glaring question inescapable: were they defeated, or did they give in?

Some of my favorite words and phrases to describe a character in pain
coiling (up in a ball, in on themselves, against something, etc)
panting (there’s a slew of adjectives you can put after this, my favorites are shakily, weakly, etc)
keeling over (synonyms are words like collapsing, which is equally as good but overused in media)
trembling/shivering (additional adjectives could be violently, uncontrollably, etc)
sobbing (weeping is a synonym but i’ve never liked that word. also love using sob by itself, as a noun, like “he let out a quiet sob”)
whimpering (love hitting the wips with this word when a character is weak, especially when the pain is subsiding. also love using it for nightmares/attacks and things like that)
clinging (to someone or something, maybe even to themselves or their own clothes)
writhing/thrashing (maybe someone’s holding them down, or maybe they’re in bed alone)
crying (not actual tears. cry as in a shrill, sudden shout)
dazed (usually after the pain has subsided, or when adrenaline is still flowing)
wincing (probably overused but i love this word. synonym could be grimacing)
doubling-over (kinda close to keeling over but they don’t actually hit the ground, just kinda fold in on themselves)
heaving (i like to use it for describing the way someone’s breathing, ex. “heaving breaths” but can also be used for the nasty stuff like dry heaving or vomiting)
gasping/sucking/drawing in a breath (or any other words and phrases that mean a sharp intake of breath, that shite is gold)
murmuring/muttering/whispering (or other quiet forms of speaking after enduring intense pain)
hiccuping/spluttering/sniffling (words that generally imply crying without saying crying. the word crying is used so much it kinda loses its appeal, that’s why i like to mix other words like these in)
stuttering (or other general terms that show an impaired ability to speak — when someone’s in intense pain, it gets hard to talk)
staggering/stumbling (there is a difference between pain that makes you not want to stand, and pain that makes it impossible to stand. explore that!)
recoiling/shrinking away (from either the threat or someone trying to help)
pleading/begging (again, to the threat, someone trying to help, or just begging the pain to stop)
Feel free to add your favorites or most used in the comments/reblogs!

Cauterizing wounds. A fervent “bite this,” before a bit is shoved between Whumpee’s teeth; shallow breaths and white knuckles; tear tracks and sweat-soaked hair; red-hot metal and burning flesh, Whumpee’s body tensing as they scream.

Look, I love the classic manhandle-the-whumpee-into-restraints trope as much as the next whump blog. But lately my mind’s been stuck on a different trope- that thing where a character is captured and they extend their hands themself to be cuffed or tied up. Just- there’s so many ways to play this trope, and all of them are so, so good.
- a character doing it because they have no choice. They’re too tired to run anymore. They just want to get it over with, so they hold out their hands for the chains. What else can they do?
- a character who is powerful, far more powerful than whoever has them cornered. But they extend their hands and let themself be taken, because if they don’t, someone less powerful will be hurt instead of them. They aren’t willing to live with that, so they go willingly.
- a character who steps forward and holds out their hands to be restrained almost gleefully. Bantering and trading taunts with their captor, because they know that every moment they spend here is another moment their team/friend/lover has to get away.
- a character who has no place to go, no last resort. They grit their teeth and hold out their hands to be bound, making the only choice they can make. But they still make the choice- it isn’t being made for them. They can still cling to the last shreds of their dignity. They keep their pride, even if they lose everything else.
- a character who falls to their knees and extends their hands immediately, terrified of what they know is coming next. They hope maybe, just maybe, if they show obedience now, they’ll be granted a little mercy later.
- a character who lets themself be restrained, but with a cold stare that says how little they think of their captor. The look in their eyes that says that whoever is doing this had better be glad that they’re chained, because if they weren’t, there would be blood on the ground, and not their own.
- a character who is submitting, but just barely. Angry and defiant even as they hold out their hands for the restraints. They’re trapped, held at weapon point. They may not want to be captured, but they also don’t want to be killed. So they hold out their hands, but they make it clear that this is not a cessation of hostilities by any means. They’ve lost this battle, but they are not done fighting.
And how does their captor react? Are they triumphant, smirking, gloating over their victory? Are they frosty, businesslike, here to get something done and not waste any time? Are they seething with anger, but unwilling to let their rage boil over just yet? Do they accept the outstretched hands, or do they ignore the show of submission and treat their prisoner roughly anyway?

Whumpee leaning on Caretaker. They don't even really need anything at the moment but a point of contact with Caretaker makes them feel safe so they just...prop themself there for a bit

best trope is the one where the character’s godlike power is also killing them btw. they don’t even lift a hand to kill the monster but now they’re delirious with fever. they save a friend’s life and said friend immediately finds them emergency medical care. they raze the enemy to nothing and it takes far too long to find their pulse with all the bruising. their friends just constantly having to patch them up and worrying over which feat will be their last. et cetera

The team sends one of the newer, younger ones out on a simple mission. However, just an hour after they've set off, the weather takes an unexpected turn for the worst. As the snow piles up, the team debates on whether or not to go and find them. Some say that this is just part of what it takes to be on this team, and others say that they're too inexperienced to handle a mission in a raging winter storm.
As more time is wasted, the snow falls faster.
Eventually, a small search party lead by the team leader is formed to find their missing teammate. Hours go by with no such teammate in sight. They start losing hope, until someone notices a tiny dot in the distance of the vast, snow-covered field they're in. It takes them a second to realize what it is. Then they run as fast as they can, the dot growing bigger.
It's their teammate, curled up into a tiny little ball, shivering violently, half-submerged under over two feet of snow. Everyone is more than relieved to have finally found them, but also incredibly worried about what's to come.
