Part 1

Kate Grant is the oldest child of Athena and Micheal Grant. What if instead of Athena finding May after she overdoses, it’s Kate?

WARNINGS : swearing, overdosing

Kate is 21 years old, 5 years older than May.

Kate Grant walks into the house, almost immediately seeing her little brother, Harry, sitting on the floor, colouring.

“Hey bug, how was your day?” Kate asks, walking over and giving her little brother a quick ruffle on the top of his head, and then sitting down on a chair by the couch.

“Great” Harry says, going back to his colouring.

“Good” Kate says. “Where’s mom?”

“She’s out in the garden, and dad said to eat dinner without him” Harry says, not looking up from his colouring.

“I’ll bet he did” Kate mutters, trying to not hold a grudge against their father for what he did. “Where’s May?”

Harry looks up from his colouring, finally. “In her room”

Kate gets back up, leaving her little brother to colour, while she goes to see her younger sister.

“May! Kiddo, whatcha doing?” Kate calls, walking towards May’s closed bedroom door.

Kate knocks on May’s door, not getting an answer. “Damn headphones with that music up so loud”

“May” Kate says, opening the bedroom door to her sisters room. As soon as she opens the door she sees an empty pill bottle on the floor, Kate can feel her whole body go numb with dread. She looks to her right, seeing her younger sister laying on her side, on the floor.

“Oh my god! Oh god!” Kate cries out, rushing to her sisters side, propping her upper body against her bedside, so Kate can get a better look at May’s face

“No no no no no-MAMA!” Kate screams, praying to god their mother can hear her from the garden.

“May? May, it’s okay. May, come on-wake up, wake up-come on, it’s okay-look at me, look at me-MAMA” Kate continues yelling.

Kate holds May’s face in her hands, lightly slapping May’s cheeks. “Breathe jellybean, come on, kiddo wake up!” Kate keeps yelling.

“MAMA!” Kate screams again. Athena rushes into the room, from the garden, her hands still have dirt on them.

Kate looks at Athena, her face tear stained. “Mama, call 911!”

Athena doesn’t need to be told twice, she calls, but doesn’t leave either of her daughters.

The ambulance has arrived, and the paramedics have May on a stretcher, taking her to the ambulance.

Kate follows behind her mother, with Harry right behind Kate.

“Mom, Kate, what’s wrong with May?” Harry asks, confused and scared.

Athena kneels in front of him, grabbing his shoulders. “Your sister isn’t feeling well, okay? I need you to go next door, to the Johnsons, call your father, tell him to meet me and Kate at the hospital, okay? Can you do that?”

Kate has already gotten into the ambulance, sitting next to May, waiting for her mother.

“Yes” Harry responds, still confused and scared.

“Lock the door, I have to go and ride with your sisters” Athena says, quickly getting into the ambulance, sitting next to her oldest.

“Her pulse is weak and threads-what’d she take?” The paramedic asks Athena, but Kate answers.

“Hydrocodone, had some left over from last year from dental work” Kate says, she saw the bottle and what it said.

“Do you know how many pills she took? The dosage?” The paramedic asks.

“Maybe six or seven were left, I-I don’t know” Athena answers.

One of the paramedics check May’s pupils.

“Pupils aren’t responding, she’s a six on the GCS, fading.” The paramedic says.

Once they get to the hospital, they’re wheeling May down the hall, Kate and Athena following.

“You’re gonna be fine, jellybean, you hear me? You’ll be fine” Kate says, even though her sister is unconscious.

The paramedics take May to the trauma centre, leaving Kate and Athena in the hallway, both scared.
