the current trend of "tumblr users embarrassing themselves by proudly announcing why they don't listen to any music made by black people" is really astounding.
i cannot help but think this is a direct result of liberal White Guilt and how people have interpreted "anti-racism" as form of cultural self-segregation - the kind of person who thinks trying to cook chicken curry is cultural appropriation, or sends white people anon hate for wearing a kimono (yes, this kind of discourse happened). like, "oh, no, i could never participate in this culture, i'd get my evil white hands all over it! it would be more Progressive if I only did White things."
if you're a poc you've seen this, i'm sure - this deer-in-the-headlights stare you can get from white people when you play music / show art / share a story / anything that is Racially Coded, this total refusal to actually engage with it out of fear that it is in some way Wrong for them to have any opinion on it. because they read somewhere that it's bad to use AAVE but the only lesson they actually learned from that is "gotcha, white people are not allowed to interact with other cultures as punishment for my White Crimes. this helps to fill up the gaping pit of my white guilt and makes me one of the Good People." this transforms their discomfort around non-white cultures (black culture, especially, i should add) into a kind of virtue
anyway if you are white and reading this. go listen to some fucking haliu mergia. ethiopian jazz. will knock your dick right off. go listen to rap or reggae or bollywood and have a genuine reaction to it - like, an actual, from-the-heart reaction. you are allowed to not like some of it. but you will definitely like at least a little. yes, you can compare it to lemon demon (or whatever) if that helps you get into it and that's your only point of reference. maybe don't say that part out loud. but don't, like, separate yourself from it, like you are seeing it in a museum and the only polite thing to do is go "ahh, huh, very interesting, so much culture here."

honestly the best thing about yu-gi-oh is how healing fucking hurts. nobody has an easy time becoming a better person. it sucks. kaiba has to be in a months-long nightmare coma to become 3% less evil. jounouchi still has the same dangerous enemies and shitty family life he always had but now those enemies think he's easy pickings. bakura's boldest attempt to stand up for himself and his friends gives him a permanant scar through his hand. these kids are killing themselves to be better people in a world that has given them nothing

no piece of teen media has ever accurately depicted the quiet psychological warfare of bullying. bullies on TV are always dumb brutes and not the evil geniuses of emotional manipulation that they are in real life. being given a wedgie and having your lunch money stolen is nothing in comparison to a classmate quietly creating a taboo against speaking to you that they intend to enforce against all the other kids. it’s nothing like continuous cutting comments from people you thought were being nice to you. that way that the work of one kid can make you feel like every person on earth silently hates you and that you are dirty, disgusting, worthless, creepy and useless. that you can have friends but many of them will not speak to you at school for fear of the social consequences on their end. how that damage lasts in any social setting for the rest of your life

when sorey said "i won't let you be my sub lord because this isn't your dream and i don't want you getting roped into something you don't personally believe in" and mikleo came back with divine artifact in hand and strengthened resolve to become a sub lord and he said "this is my dream too" but what he really meant was "you are my dream." and "you are my everything. your dreams are my dreams. your beliefs are my beliefs. and i would go to the ends of the earth and back just to be with you. and i would give my life and my everything just to see your dreams realized because i know it means the world to you and you are the world to me."
and when sorey says "i want to create a world where humans and seraphim can coexist" he means "my bond with mikleo is so great that i believe every human should have the opportunity to have a bond like that. everyone should get to have what i have. humans and seraphim were meant to be together and i know this because mikleo and i were meant to be together. and i would go to the ends of the earth and back and give up everything if it means the rest of the world has a chance at someday having what i have. because every human deserves a mikleo."
mikleo's "i would give the world for you" and sorey's "i need to give you to the world."

The thing about Sormik. The THING about Sormik. Is that I know the common refrain is that it's a boring vanilla childhood best friends ship, which it absolutely is, BUT
To me it's about the fact that they're committed to each other in a way that is almost never questioned-- their one fight at the beginning comes from Sorey undermining Mikleo's agency and not ALLOWING him to fully commit to Sorey in the way that he wants to. And it stays this way despite that they are not the same thing and despite that Sorey's duties pull him away, eventually for an extended period of time. It was not inevitable that they would stay committed to each other, but every step of the way there is a mutual understanding that that's what they're choosing to do. So, that.
And then also I just enjoy Mikleo as his own character-- I feel like he often gets pigeonholed as the pretty boy tsundere or the voice of reason, but you know, he's both elegant and dignified and also passionate and easily flustered, trying to be the rational counterbalance to some of Sorey's impulsiveness-- and, you know, just incredibly loyal and determined in both obvious ways and in extremely subtle ways that run through his whole character.

*buys a half gallon of milk* *uses it all within a few days* *decided to buy a gallon of milk to not run out before next shopping trip* *uses a teaspoon of milk that week and it goes bad somehow* *buys a quart of milk instead so it won’t go bad* *uses it in one day* *buys a quart and a half gallon of milk because the gallon was too much but the half gallon was not enough* *only uses the half gallon* *gives up on milk for a few days in general* *buys a gallon of milk again just to tempt fate* *somehow uses all of it without realizing and then has to eat sad cereal with like the 5 drops of remaining milk*

seriously big shoutout to twewy and neo for being about characters who pushed others away learning to trust again.
all the playable characters are social outcasts bonding with other social outcasts that go beyond the tropes they end up subverting. none are too overly edgy (at most you can argue neku and shoka but neku’s actively poked fun at and shoka bounces off the rest of the wicked twisters so well (rindo is just socially awkward which i feel)). there’s also like. no real chosen one bullshit. rindo is arguably the closest but he was just being fucked with bc the angels felt like targeting the most detached person in the game for funsies while trying to fill some kind of moral obligation.
there really needs to be more rpg parties and characters in general that consist of people who are nothing remarkable and never get to be in a chosen one scenario but learn they can find their people.
