Do you think authors sometimes don't realize how their, uh, interests creep into their writing? I'm talking about stuff like Robert Jordan's obvious femdom kink, or Anne Rice's preoccupation with inc*st and p*dophilia. Did their editors ever gently ask them if they've ever actually read what they've written?
Firstly, a reminder: This is not tiktok and we just say the words incest and pedophilia here.
Secondly, I don't know if I would call them 'interests' so much as fixations or even concerns. There are monstrous things that people think about, and I think writing is a place to engage with those monstrous things. It doesn't bother me that people engage with those things. I exist somewhere within the whump scale, and I would hope no one would think less of me just because sooner or later I like to rough a good character up a bit, you know? It's fun to torture characters, as a treat!
But, anyway, assuming this question isn't, "Do writers know they're gross when I think they are gross" which I'm going to take the kind road and assume it isn't, but is instead, "Do you think authors are aware of the things they constantly come back to?"
Sometimes. It can be jarring to read your own writing and realize that there are things you CLEARLY are preoccupied with. (mm, I like that word more than concerns). There are things you think about over and over, your run your mind over them and they keep working their way back in. I think this is true of most authors, when you read enough of them. Where you almost want to ask, "So...what's up with that?" or sometimes I read enough of someone's work that I have a PRETTY good idea what's up with that.
I've never read Robert Jordan and I don't intend to start (I think it would bore me this is not a moral stance) and I've really never read Rice's erotica. In erotica especially I think you have all the right in the world to get fucking weird about it! But so, when I was young I read the whole Vampire Chronicles series. I don't remember it perfectly, but there's plenty in it to reveal VERY plainly that Anne Rice has issues with God but deeply believes in God, and Anne Rice has a preoccupation with the idea of what should stay dead, and what it means to become. So, when i found out her daughter died at the age of six, before Rice wrote all of this, and she grew up very very Catholic' I said, 'yeah, that fucking checks out'.
Was Rice herself aware of how those things formed her writing? I think at a certain point probably yes. The character of Claudia is in every way too on the nose for her not to have SOME idea unless she was REAL REAL dense about her own inner workings. But, sometimes I know where something I write about comes from, that doesn't mean I'm interested in sharing it with the class. I would never ever fucking say, 'The reasons I seem to write so much of x as y is that z happened to me years ago' ahaha FUCK THAT NOISE. NYET. RIDE ON, COWBOY.
But I've known some people in fandom works who clearly have something going on and don't seem to realize it. Or they're very good at hiding it. Based on the people I'm talking about I would say it's more a lack of self-knowledge, and I don't even mean that unkindly. I have, in many ways, taken myself down to the studs and rebuilt it all, so I unfortunately am very aware of why I do and write the things I do most of the time. It's extremely annoying not to be able to blame something. I imagine it must be very freeing. But it ain't me, babe.
Anyway, a lot of words to say: Maybe! But that might not stop them from writing it, it might be a useful thing for them to engage with, and you can always just not read it.
Also, we don't censor words here.

🚨 We Need Your Kindness to Survive 🚨
Hello, My name is Mosab Elderawi, and I live in Gaza with my family. Life here has become harder than I ever imagined, and I’m writing this with hope in my heart that you might hear our story.
The ongoing war has devastated my family. We’ve lost 25 family members—each one a beloved part of our lives, taken too soon. I miss them deeply—their laughter, their presence, their love. Every day is a reminder of this unimaginable loss.

64.media.tumblr.com

64.media.tumblr.com

We are now facing daily challenges to survive—things that most people take for granted, like food, clean water, and a safe place to sleep. The harsh realities of life here have replaced our dreams with the constant fight for survival.
Our Current Situation:
💔 Lost Stability: The war has left us without work or a stable source of income. 🍞 Basic Needs: Food and water are becoming harder to afford with rising prices and scarce resources. 📚 Dreams on Hold: Like so many here, my family’s dreams have been replaced by the need to simply survive. 😢 Unimaginable Loss: Losing 25 loved ones has left a void that can never be filled.
How You Can Help:
I’m sharing our story with the hope that someone out there might care. Even $5 can make a big difference for us, and if you’re unable to donate, just reblogging this post can help spread the word.
Your kindness, no matter how small, is something we’ll never forget.
What This Means to Us:
Your support is not about changing our entire situation—it’s about giving us a little relief, a little hope, and a way to keep going. We are not asking for much, and we understand if you can’t donate. Sharing our story is just as valuable to us as a donation.
Thank you for reading this far. It means the world to us to know that someone is listening. Your kindness gives us strength and helps us believe in a better tomorrow.
With all our gratitude, Mosab Elderawi and Family ❤️

obsessed with Wolfstar raising Harry, who ends up dating Draco. When he introduces Draco to Remus and Sirius, Sirius is against it at first, but, after much convincing from Remus, warms up to Draco overtime.
They bond over shit-talking abt their family, but it gets Sirius to finally reach out to Narcissa after years, and they have a heart-to-heart about everything that went wrong.

In Drarry fics I love a shocked Ron at the reveal that Harry is dating Draco but honestly nothing beats a unfazed Ron. Harry is expecting outrage and indignation but instead met with a sigh so heavy with resignation because Ron has been waiting for the inevitable. This is how I picture it going
Harry: you’re just fine with this? You don’t even seem that surprised. How did you guess?
Ron: guess? Please. You two have been up each other’s ass one way or another since you were 11. This is hardly the scandal of the century.
Harry: What!? Hermione, back me up. You’re at least a little shocked right?
Hermione: oh no, I knew this was where we would end up back in 4th year when I realized you were at least a little queer
Harry: I didn’t come out until I was 20! You’re making this up
Hermione: there’s no heterosexual explanation for the way you looked at Diggory
Ron: when Cho kissed you the only description you gave was “wet”
Hermione: he still turns red when Bill or Charlie hug him and that started 4th year too
Harry: I hate you

I can't stop thinking about how Draco and Harry's whole rivalry started because Harry wouldn't be friends with Draco. Draco and Ron or Harry and Zacharias or any of the other duos that don't get along don't have this dynamic. Well, unless of course count Lily and James who have a strikingly similar meet-ugly and then end up together after James's (presumed - offscreen and imho not very convincingly written but that's a whole other post) redemption.
There's something so intimate and personal about the way it started, not with mutual dislike or disinterest, but with Draco being drawn to Harry even before he knew who he was and then coping very badly with rejection and Harry being turned off by Draco's behavior and attitudes but also noticing him so keenly that he even dreams about him on his first night at school.
When we compare this dynamic to other people that Harry or Draco dislike we see how different and unique it is. And then on top of that their stories remain so intertwined. To the point that their connection decides the climax of the war in book 7. It's just so lovely and drarry fits so naturally into that.

7 most unhinged canon drarry moments
Harry calling Draco his arch nemesis just a few months after Lord Voldemort tried to murder him for the second time but also immediately thinking that he kinda misses him
Harry getting hit in the head by a piece of luggage because he got so distracted by the sight of Draco changing that he didn’t notice someone swinging a large object at his face
Harry lying to the Order and Magical Law Enforcement to obfuscate Draco’s crimes at the end of sixth year
Voldemort immediately assuming Draco has gone looking for Harry when he goes missing during the Battle of Hogwarts…and being right
Narcissa assuming Harry will know where Draco is and if he’s still alive…and being right
Lucius getting mad at Draco in book 2 because he has spent the entire summer talking nonstop about Harry Potter
Harry forgetting about the time Voldemort possessed and nearly murdered Ginny but remembering every item he saw Draco look at in Borgin and Burkes 4 years previously

Oh my god, thank you so much for writing it! Yes, you should definitely do a reread (look at me reccing you to you) but like do it with a kind eye? I don't know if this is usual, but whenever I reread something I wrote (scientific writing for work, not beautiful fics but still) all I can see are flaws or areas of improvement that nobody else can see, and I'd be heartbroken if that happened to you and NATG.
Also, I'm fangirling just a little bit right now this is wild

When I first read the summary, I thought to myself that I'll be happy as long as it isn't as trite as Legends and Lattes. Boy was that a low bar I set.
I was on the ride with draco the whole time, even when I was screaming at him to not make that giant delusional mistake. But the knot in my stomach kept getting tighter and tighter and the entire first half of the book felt like watching a train crash in real time.
And then everything changed. It was slow, and syrupy, and confused, and it hurt. Not a single character was safe; there were difficult choices about morality and justice and putting in the work and making reparations and heartbreak all around, and then there was healing. It was still complicated, but we were all okay.
This story is clearly a labor of love. It's impeccably paced and intricately detailed (also! The chapter header drawing thingies! Ah!). It's about addiction and sobriety and free will and love. It's about how love can hurt and it can heal, and this fic did both for me.
#should've started documenting my fic reads sooner#is this how people feel when celebrities look at them#this is my gift from the universe for the day#i get so many recs from sitp

Such a fun read! I loved the beginning, with the next gen kids being dropped into the story so abruptly. It hooked me into the story immediately. The other abrupt thing was being dropped into an already established drarry dynamic, which i wasn't expecting. We get the backstory later, and I love the way the drarry dynamic evolves throughout the story, but I was a little confused and unconvinced in the beginning (that changed pretty quickly though).
My favorite part was all the interaction between draco and the next gen kids, and the Christmas holidays at hogwarts. I enjoyed it so much, the "good times" of the story were so good that the story complications had even more emotional impact because of the contrast.
At the end of the story, I felt... honored? To be let into this little secret portion of their lives. To hold these memories. While I described the beginning of the story as abrupt, the end was just perfect. It was resolved, but not too resolved, and hopeful, and I was content.

What a journey. I loved to see Draco's transformation, his slow realization that preserving your own heritage doesn't mean destroying other communities. I loved their relationship and how it grew, and how quickly it got so intense. I shed tears for them through heartbreak and happiness, rooting for them the whole time.
Esther is my favorite. She's the warm grandma we all want/miss dearly, she's got an ironclad moral compass. Generally, I like fics to be, well, fictional (worlds where nobody bats an eyelid at non-heteronormative behavior etc) but I appreciated how real Esther was in this. I've been listening to so many Jewish voices for peace these days irl, and I felt Esther's beliefs resonated so strongly with those voices.
I know this is a completed fic and not part of a series, but I'd read so much more in this universe! Tell me more about the fair folk and gardening in the moonlight and learning lessons at Esther's knee. I'm here for it

A very engaging, quick read. The drarry relationship at the beginning was good, but a bit sudden. Really enjoyed the way we got to see Harry from Draco's POV, as someone who is a bit mysterious and knows things nobody else does (but we know those things too! Lots of Canon easter eggs) and who is oblivious about their own power, magical and otherwise.
There's many flashbacks, which are maybe not done in the smoothest way possible? I do still like the story but maybe the first long flashback could have been spliced with more scenes from Draco's Sundays at Hogwarts. It could also have helped with developing Lily's character a bit; I was left wanting to get to know her better.

The banter! Not just between Harry and Draco, but also most other characters. Sometimes laugh-out-loud funny, but I wouldn't call the story a comedy.
Draco is my favorite character in this. He's unhinged in the best, nerdiest, neurodivergent (not explicitly said but c'mon) way possible. I fell in love with him just as Harry did, so the romance was natural and believable too. No tooth-rotting fluff, but lots of really nice warm glow feelings in your chest.
Hermione and Ron have a great relationship too, and great personalities individually as well. It's the opposite of ron-bashing, which is always enjoyable.
Really really enjoyed the read, enough to finally start documenting my fic reads after deliberating doing so for years!

Highlights from the conference room where they nominated contenders for Word of the Year 2023:
• They put Skibidi Toilet on the projector to explain what “skibidi” means.
• Baby Gronk was mentioned.
• We discussed the Rizzler.
• “Cunty” was nominated.
• “Enshittification” was suggested for EVERY category.
• “Blue Check” (like from Twitter) was briefly defined as “Someone who will not Shut The Fuck Up”
• The person writing notes briefly defined babygirl as “referencing [The Speaker]”. He is now being called babygirl in the linguist groupchats.
• MULTIPLE people raised their hand to say “I cannot stress this enough: ‘Babygirl’ refers to a GROWN MAN”

i know we’re both just messing around pretending to be whole but look at me. if the train was coming would you move. if the ground was falling from under your feet would you even notice or would it just be another tuesday for you. if somebody stabbed you could it hurt worse than you already do. what i’m saying is that i love you but i think we both drive over the speed limit when it’s raining. what i’m saying is that i want to hold your hand and i understand about how you sometimes have to sit down in the shower. what i’m saying is that i’m here for you and if the train comes please move.

im so done with seeing articles about kids and screen time that doesnt mention parent behaviors even once. “kids are always on their phones” so are the parents! which the kids look to for how they should behave! ipad babies didn’t chose to only play on their ipads, thats what their parents gave them!
an anecdotal example: when i was a kid, all my parents would do in their minimal free time was watch tv and then they would be surprised when in my sister and i’s minimal free time we would also only watch tv/play video games. they scolded us for not reading books, but they never read books. they scolded us for not going outside but they never went outside.
“kids are always on their damn phones” my mom is in her 60s and opens up candy crush anytime she’s sitting — it isnt just the kids
