what to say other than i adore this city - from its beautiful, tawny-skinned youth to the sun-drenched elderly that hang about in neighborhood alleys speaking portuguese words enthralled with fiery passion; from its original hand-painted tiles that adorn every other building to its slippery limestone-like tiled sidewalks and cobblestone roads that on a rainy day especially, test the strength and agility of your ankles; from olive-oil-soaked sardines, to piri-piri-dressed-chicken-and-infused drinks, to $3 half-bottles of addictively sparkly vinho verde, to the gently, flaking crust of a pastel de nata; from the “americano” trolleys that roll on past the steep, cobbled hills to the 25 de abril bridge that resembles the golden gate so much so that sometimes you have to remind yourself which city you’re in; from the intricately weaved bairros to sunset-perfect miradouros to luxe rooftops; there’s a place for everyone - misfits and rejects, freaks and geeks, fitties and foodies, adventurers and homebodies, entrepreneurs and artists, polished beauties and au naturel sapiens. it’s been two years since i saw you last, #lisboa, and blessed i am to be able to spend a whole month with you this time, too. while you have changed a bit in outward appearance - the sounds of english and french now seep in around every secret corner and corridor - tall, yellow cranes now cradle your skyline - hopeful millennials wander your narrow streets in search of that perfect, quintessentially “lisbon” photo - you remain, as you are, in every way, perfect, to me. i love the lives untold that lay behind your dangling laundry lines, and the way your messy electric lines intersect the city above; i love the hodgepodge of graffiti and art that deck your dilapidated walls. there is so much more to love, for you have so much to give; what else can i say, other than thank you - thank you for letting me see a slither of your true self, thank you for offering a little bit of yourself to me, to all of us who come and bask in your energy; i will try not to drain you of it and instead, find a way to return, or pay forward, all of the love, light and color that you have shown me. day 160-ish: nearly five months on the road exploring the southern continent of america and a handful of places have truly left an impression on me, deeply penetrating my occasional indifference when it comes to traveling these days. one of those places is cusco, touristic as it is - given that it caters to the crowds of people who pass through en route to machu picchu. the indigenous communities here remain proud of their heritage, and do what they can to maintain it in spite of the unforeseen side effects that tourism and modernity sometimes brings. so much of who they are, what they do (i.e - farming and weaving), the language they speak (quechua), is steeped with tradition from centuries ago, and it’s a beautiful thing to see and feel when you encounter it. . . . #animalsofinstagram #cusco #peru #sacredvalley #travel #travelgram #passionpassport #tinyatlas #nature #travelphotography (at Cusco, Peru)
