one of the most heartbreaking parts of Dan Heng’s character, I think, is that he struggles with his identity because he can’t reconcile what he considers himself to be with what he considers Dan Feng to be, while also knowing subconsciously that due to the nature of the High Elder succession they are the same person-

and yet, ironically, this struggle to embrace his humanity despite being taught that’s not what he is, originates from Dan Feng in the first place. Because Dan Heng’s insistence that he is not the monster he believed Dan Feng to be is so similar to Dan Feng’s own realisation that he couldn’t fit his human self into the concept of Imbibitor Lunae.

Dan Feng was punished for the outcome realising who he was, and what he’d been denied, and that punishment turned his hatred of circumstance into hatred of himself.

I like to think that Yingxing becoming friends with Dan Feng was most likely not a case of “I’m gonna go talk to the high elder he seems interesting” but rather “I’m gonna go talk to the high elder because I am absolutely not supposed to do that”. They destabilised a nation together and the inciting incident was spite. Rules are in fact made to be broken
