With the emergence of these playlists really highlighting the reality of Taylor and Joe’s relationship and how some songs have a much more complex nuanced meaning/feeling to it than originally thought, it makes me even more intrigued in the invisible string- mastermind pipeline.

When mastermind came out on midnights, I know a lot of us were confused and joking about how funny it is that on other songs like paper rings, she is saying that they accidentally became lovers and on invisible string, she is saying it was fated for them to be together all along but now on mastermind, she is saying she made it happen. So, it’s like which is it Taylor?? 😭

And I believe it’s because she was confused by their relationship all along, as seen by the placement of some of her past songs about him in these different “stages of grief” playlists. I think Mastermind is her coming to the conclusion that the relationship was never actually fated like once thought but instead sadly forced as she made it happen but that ultimately meant it wasn’t right especially since Midnights is an album heavily based on the reflection of their relationship as she tries to figure out whether she should stay in it or not. It’s even more interesting that it’s the closing song on the standard edition, so it’s like the definite conclusion after reflecting on the relationship as a whole, that at the end of the day, she had a big part in making it happen and that it wasn’t accidental or completely fated as led to believe before! I think this is made even clearer on closer examination of invisible string, as some of things she mentions are not really that “fatefully” connected to each other like the fact that his yoghurt shop uniform and the grass at one of her favourite parks is the same colour, which although cute to link, are not really that unique. Overall, I do think they were meant to be in each others lives but I do think that Taylor realised at some point that their relationship was not gonna work out because it was not actually destined to like she thought, which is very interesting!

I just thought I’d post my thoughts on this as I came to that conclusion months ago but these playlists just really reinforced it for me and I find it so fascinating that in general you can really think at first that a relationship is something that it’s not and it’s only on reflection you see the reality.
