I’ve always liked this old painting. Sometimes I feel like a child, blindly being led around by my shadow twin. But I trust her. This piece is called, life partners. I’m riding a shadow wave right now. It’s painful and uncomfortable and I know it means I’ll feel ecstatic and grateful and relieved and excited when the first rays up light peak over the next approaching crest. End and flows baby. This is like one of those “find the differences” images. There is a long story about this piece and why I painted it twice. I painted this image for my dear friend Brian QTN’s album, The Sound of Photosynthesis. Brian is one of those special forever souls in my life -the teacher; the friend; the family- and he is that for so many people. It is amazing the capacity he has to love and care for so many. I know from experience how exhausting it can be sometimes and yet, there is no other choice even if it drains us dry, we will give our love in the very last drop. I know a few of you out there really know what I mean. And I honor you and thank you. It is a hard world to be vulnerable and loving in and we NEED people who live in love. This piece is ALMOST finished which probably means I should stop. Started in Costa Rica in the @amandasageart workshop, Painting with Light in the Jungle, at beautiful @puntamona I discovered a new technique called decalcomania and spent more time “listening to the painting.” I think the lessons I learned with this piece will help inform the next work I do and I’m excited! I tried to get some time working outside today but I’m not feeling well and as soon as I got painting it started raining. Still, I always love how the shadows roll across the trailer as the light changes. The snake heads got kissed by the light in this session. These two pieces were created for a band in Austin called @iamthealbatross (swipe for both images) The first, “Overgrown,” is about home -how the place we know as home changes, how we carry home with us and how even we are impermanent. The second, “Kill Hole,” is a tribute to a tribe called the Mimbres who lived in the Southwest and were known for their pottery. Anthropologists are currently studying the link between these beautiful anthropomorphic ceramics, psychotropic plants found at burial sites, and the burial rituals of the Mimbres. It is thought that the bowls were painted with animals and human characteristics and then punctured and placed over the head of the deceased to release their spirit, which is why the hole at the center of the vessel has been called a “kill hole”.
