gerome says inigo didn't wake him and he takes the chance to recover some of his lost dignity. there's a basin of water they keep nearby that he shuffles over to, to splash his face and wake himself up properly.

nightmares were the plague of those from future past. his own had been full of risen reaching for him, suffocating behind the walls of regna ferox while his father fought somewhere in the distance.

when he lifts his head from washing his face, he jolts at the offered candy.

" oh - you still carry this stuff around? "

it's not a complaint or an insult. he takes the offered sweets and pops one into his mouth quietly, letting the sugar take his mind off the old frightening thoughts.

" ah, right on the head with that one. i don't get them as often anymore, but with the latest battles. . .seems i've been restless. "

a pause, as the silence lingers.

" why aren't you asleep? "

It honestly doesn't surprise him. Gerome avoids sleeping inside the tents with the others for many reasons, but he's no stranger to nightmares. It'd surprise him more if any of him companions from the past were free from that curse.

"You did not wake me."

He withdraws his hand and immediately roams to find his mask and put it on. It seems trying to sleep in the tent tonight was a bad choice.

Uncharacteristically maybe, Gerome walks back to his bag, coming back seconds later with a couple of wrapped candies from his secret stash. He offers it to Inigo.

"It seems you had a bad nightmare. Not surprising. We may have escaped our world but we haven't escaped fate... nor our memories."

inigo can't help the way he jolts at gerome's hand on his shoulder, the way he reaches for a blade already kicked out of the way - and he breathes in deep to stop the panic from blooming hot under his skin.

it takes a moment for his eyes to adjust to the dark shape of gerome, half-armored, and a moment longer for him to register the words.

oh.

" oh - uh. s...sorry? if i woke you. "

he sits himself upright, rubbing at his brow, before he exhales a little sigh.

" ugh. well, i'm definitely up for the night. "

he's just come in off watch, dragging himself to the circle of tents in the camp that belonged to those who had fled the future. he's not surprised they clustered together like this at the edges of the campsite - it felt strange to be among mixed company of present and not-yet.

irene settles at his side as he trails his fingers over the tome in his lap, and the book closes with a thump as he sighs.

" i'm just not tired. i should be, but i. . .i can't sleep. "

outside, the winds drag sand from the far-off windstorms of plegia. he can hear it scattering on their tents, a sound so familiar that it's making him restless.

" sorry. i know you're just trying to help. "

he laughs as he says it, his face in a bright smile despite how tired healing magic made him feel. the smile very nearly reaches his eyes, almost genuine, when gaius thanks him.

" so i asked maribelle to teach me! and it worked! "

he waves his hands for emphasis, before patting himself down. the blood on him had soaked into his cloak and shirt. he would definitely need a bath.

a touch to his brow shows the blood on his face is mostly his, from a small wound he hadn't felt, and he shrugs despite it.

" you're really fast on the field. i wish i was that quick. "

The thief is sat on a stray rock, blade resting on the floor to his side, also very bloodied. Although he knows some of the blood on himself is his own, it's hard to pinpoint if the same goes for Henry, who seems to be always bloody even if without a scratch.

he doesn't ask permission beyond that, grabbing gaius's wrist and leaning forward to hover his hand over the worst slash on his arm. there's the prickling sensation of magic and the wound seals - though it isn't nearly as neat as the way wounds were healed by the clerics. the scar it leaves will linger, but it wasn't bleeding anymore.

henry smiles, though he's breathing heavier than normal.
