I love Deadly Premonition even if it doesn't love me back... (my game crashed, I hadn't saved in a bit which meant I had to recollect a bunch of bones (frustrating). I loaded up my last save and then my car decided to randomly flip, explode, and kill York...two times in a row.)

Hey guys long time no post lol...Just wanted to let you know that for the next few weeks(?) I'll be streaming Deadly Premonition: The Director's Cut (PC) Tuesday-Thursdays 8:30pm-11:00pm (PT) over on my Twitch!
I stream mainly horror games on there in an effort to raise money for #extralife year round (It's my 6th year!) :) This year my goal is to raise $10K by the end of December and thought it was high time to replay one of my favs again and inch ever closer to 1K hours of playtime!
I hope you guys will come by and say hi!

A compilation of unused Deadly Premonition voice clips associated with a scrapped mechanic where the player used to be able to kill major NPCs, including York's heartbroken response
Sorting through these files was only possible thanks to the data extraction made available by evonymus
It’s been awhile so I thought I would re share some of the Deadly Premonition video content I’ve made over the years.
First is my super in-depth Let’s Play! I discuss the game’s dev, secrets, & tried to show ALL possible optional conversations & alt cutscenes. I seriously tried my best to show everything… I mean to give you an idea a usually 20min long chapter takes me like 4 hours to complete haha

If you aren’t into watching a 24hour long LP you can check out the story breakdown I made with my friend Dan! It was made before Deadly Premonition 2 fucked up my timeline lol (seriously there were tons of in game clues the Greenvale Investigation took place June 2006…)

If you just want to know why I’m so into this game I also made this video (it’s full of spoilers)
Sometimes a translation is technically correct but cultural nuance might make it give off the wrong impression.
In Japanese, Carol only ever refers to Thomas as 兄さん (niisan), a term used to refer to an older brother. So on a surface level it does make sense that they make her say “My brother” rather than “Thomas” in the official English version.
But in English, for someone to respond to “Where’s Thomas?” with “My brother is resting” gives a distant, almost cold vibe, like a strange refusal to refer to them by name. It’s not how you’d typically expect someone close to their sibling to talk.
Meanwhile, the use of niisan in this context couldn’t be more different! To refer to Thomas that way while talking to others would be considered childish. Think of it like talking to someone unrelated and saying “Mom” instead of “My mother.”
Between that and her using niisan over the more proper term oniisan implies a great level of closeness between her and Thomas, something that English players might miss!
How were you able to look in the game files to find the unused lines?
we are lucky enough that the files have already been extracted by user evonymus!! you can download it from their blog here, its a great resource we use it a lot, especially the text dump with all the conversations and stuff!
Despite being an English game the script for Deadly Premonition was originally written in Japanese. This is noticeable in a lot of text only conversations without voice acting that have a lot of typos and strange grammar. But sometimes the translations also completely recontextualize what was said!
Take this conversation in Chapter 4 on rainy nights. After seeing Thomas dance, York says “Once this case is over, we should hit a dance club in Seattle.” Thomas replies “Oh… Please, I’m not going to a dance hall.” This gives the impression that York brought up going to a casual hangout location but Thomas misinterpreted it as being invited to somewhere much more intimate.
But in the Japanese, it’s practically the opposite!
York says: 事件が解決したら
シアトルのダンスホールへ招待しよう
Where "ダンスホール" does specifically mean dance hall, the kind of place one would ballroom dance. Very different from where you would go clubbing.
Thomas replies: そんな・・・
・・・ と とんでもありません!
Which essentially is a very confused and flustered response.
In conclusion: We were robbed of York immediately asking out Thomas. And York is a nerd who thinks ballroom dancing is a normal first date activity.
Diane’s side quest always seemed weird with how it abruptly starts with York asking where “he” is now. After digging around in the files, sure enough that’s not how it’s supposed to go. Half the dialogue is out of order and there’s an entire line missing!
So with some rough video editing here is Diane’s side quest back in proper order, complete with previously missing dialogue talking about where her father is now!
...that’s fucking up my original timeline lol

Rewatching the Deadly Premonition 2 extended trailer...hmmm is that Kaysen and Willie I spy there? loling at the Zach making a creepy face on Kaysen's belly. I really do hope we learn more about the Red Tree and its agents in this game. The tree on the cover a good sign we will!
