The Cheese Cloak

Context: My D&D party is new to the game, and despite being very green myself, I was picked to be the DM for our first few campaigns. Wanting to do something simple we were all somewhat familiar with, I ended up making a Skyrim homebrew and set their first task to be clearing out a farmhouse that was full of goblins.

(Everyone is looting the farmhouse in hopes of finding something valuable. Fighter rolls a perception check in the kitchen.)

DM (me): The kitchen is utterly trashed. There’s a cellar door in the corner of the room. You notice there’s something smeared on the edge of the door… it’s… cheese?

Fighter: “Why is there cheese on everything?!”

Ranger: (NPC) “Because goblins are disgusting.”

Druid: “Wait, why don’t we go search through the pile of clothes for a cloak for [Alchemist]?” (The Alchemist in the group is a Teifling and is currently on the run from the law.)

The group all goes to search the clothes in the bedroom, failing one after another until the last roll.

DM: “You find a cloak among the mess of clothes. It’s bright yellow and beige with gold embroidery around the edges.”

DM: (OOC) “You wanted a cloak, so there it is.”

Alchemist: “Oh great! A cheese cloak! It probably smells like cheese!”

Fighter: (OOC) “I roll for cheese in the hood.” (proceeds to roll a natural 20)

The entire party is laughing now.

DM: “You find a small wheel of fancy, artisan cheese in the hood of the cloak, which indeed, smells like cheese.”
