My name is Clarissa. I am 20 years old and I have been a fan of your music since I was just 11 years old and in 5th grade. I remember I fell in love with Teardrops On My Guitar because it related perfectly to the way I felt about a boy I had a crush on in middle school.

Flash forward to 8th grade, when I came out as bisexual and started dating my first girlfriend. I still loved your music just as much. I even converted my first girlfriend to be a Swiftie, and we attended the 1989 World Tour together! While your music always resonated with me through so many situations, I remember always longing for a LGBTQ+ Taylor song. After all, your music has been the soundtrack to everything else in my life.

Now, here we are, 2019. Above pictured is my current girlfriend, Liz. She is single handedly the greatest person I have ever met. She fills my life and the lives of those around her with so much sunshine and joy. Meeting her, you would never know what kind of hatred she has to deal with from her parents at home. I won’t go into details, but there have been multiple occasions where this sweet girl has been called names and been hurt physically just for her sexual identity. Seeing her pain from their hatred infuriates me and is something that has been on my mind a lot recently.

Taylor, I just want to thank you for having the courage to release this song. The lyrics are fun and catchy, but to people like myself and Liz they mean so much more. You have, yet again, given me an outlet or voice - to be able to scream the words of exactly how I’ve been feeling these last months is so comforting and freeing. Thank you for speaking up for fans like us and giving us a voice, in times like this it’s all we can really ask for.
