Love Letter Across Time 14
Lancelot watched as Merlina took her letters and walked out. Thanks to her, both of them could now hear minor sounds but that was the start. Hearing her tell him that he needed to interact with the desk more to build the magic would be an easy task. Just to be sure his king was present, he knocked again. There was a moment of silence but the knock was returned. How did they build the magic up was the next question. There was a knock from the drawer. Lancelot opened it and saw a letter.
My dearest,
Did you get to read the latest adventure? I read yours. I am glad you succeeded. It may have been a long road but you followed the path you wished to take and I am so proud you did. Was the journey exciting? You encountered so much. Even dragons.
The king found his adventure…thrilling? Then again, the king loved traveling. As for his latest adventure, he did read it. It was quite the herorring tale. He was enjoying it until the king brought this…beast form. He was unsure of what that meant but from what the king described. It sounded quite painful. Not to mention this Dark Gaia and Light Gaia. The battle those two had was not the king's business yet this Eggman dragged him into it. Using his king like a battery. Had he been there…the king would have been spared such a fate.
He wrote a response out and tucked it into the drawer. Closing it and knocking on it. A part of him hoped that form was gone. Taken away when Light Gaia regained their power. A part of him feared the king was forever cursed. Doomed to a life where this form would haunt him for all eternity. If that was the case, then he would seek out any form of treatment past and in the future. Any magic remedies that could cure the king of this ailment. And should no cure be found, then he’d find a way to ensure his lifelong partner would be supported during those troubling times.
He heard a knock and found himself smiling. He was able to know when he replied now or just present in the moment. He opened the drawer to see no response but a knock told him his king was still present. He closed it and tried to picture what his Liege was doing. Perhaps his king existed alongside him, enjoying the quiet. Seems both were trying to figure out how to build the magic up quickly.
We'll do it all…everything…on our own
Lancelot didn't get up but he could hear something. It wasn't a lute. He had heard that instrument before. This was not the same sound. It was something else but not at the same time.
We don't need anything or anyone.
To test if he was slowly losing it though. He stood and the music he had been hearing ceased. The knight quickly sat back down then. It was back and that confirmed then what was going on.
If I lay here. If I just lay here. Would you lie with me and just forget the world?
The king was either singing or this was music being played from his side on a device his Majesty had brought up a couple times before this.
I don't quite know how to say…how I feel.
It got quiet again but the music was still playing. He was trying to figure out if his king was singing or not. If he was, then the king had an amazing voice.
Those three words…are said too much. They're not enough. If I lay here…if I just lay here. Would you lie with me and just forget the world? Forget what we're told before we get too old. Show me a garden that's burstin into life
The knight leaned his arms against the desk and put his head on it. Crossing a leg over as he kept listening. He'd have to check the drawer for a letter.
Let's waste time..chasing cars…around our heads. I need your grace to remind me to find my own.
Lancelot laughed. These lyrics really should have been sung by him if that was the case. The king had more grace than he ever would. Not that his lessons neglected grace but it wasn't something a knight needed to perform. Kings, Queens, nobility alike needed them to uphold the status they had. A knight was just a high ranking servant given a weapon. Trained to be a weapon to whomever they served.
If I lay here. If I just lay here. Would you lie with me and just forget the world? Forget what we're told before we get too old. Show me a garden that's bursting into life. All that I am. All that I ever was. Is here in your perfect eyes, they're all I can see. I don't know where. Confused about how as well. Just know that these things will never change for us at all.
It felt as if the music was going to stop soon. He hoped it didn't. He was enjoying it.
If I lay here…if I just lay here…would you lie with me and just forget the world?
It did end and he found himself wishing it had continued. The black Knight opened the drawer to see a letter inside. He pulled it out and read the few lines written.
Did it work? Did you hear me singing and playing my guitar? Knock three times if you. If you didn't, don't knock
Lancelot found himself wishing for more. The king has been singing. He had been playing an instrument. He wanted to hear more. The black Knight knocked three times and heard three knocks returned. Loud ones that exuded joy. Seems even the king was happy. Yet another thing that this desk could now bring to him. Now they could do more than just write. He felt his tail wagging and promptly grabbed it. Dignity, he had to control himself around his king. Even if he couldn't see him. He was still in his presence.

Song: Could Have Been Me - The Struts
Animation: meee (abbilaura)
IT’S FINALLY FINISHED!!!! After almost 6 weeks of work, my Sonadow Aerial Acrobatics animation to Could Have Been Me is done 😊
Please watch and enjoy, I put a whole lot of love into this!! I’ll put my ramblings about it under the cut so I don’t clog your blogs.
Oh my gosh, what a project.
Let me preface this by saying I am not an animator. I’ve done a couple of like >5s animations before for fun, but this was a WHOLE different beast. I know most of it is really an animatic, but there are some parts where I was doing frame by frame animation (albeit a low fps). I bought Procreate Dreams and learnt A LOT!
Anyway, the story…
This is based LOOSELY on a not-yet-published au (not my au) in which Sonic and Shadow are aerial acrobats. I kind of diverged from that story and made up my own just for this song, but it’s based on that AU (or what I knew of it at the time I started this!)
Sonic is a reckless, self-taught acrobat with no regard for the rules or his own safety. Shadow is a disciplined and academy-trained, but woefully retired, acrobat who left that world behind after Maria’s accident. In this song, Sonic is begging Shadow to join him on the rope. It shocks everyone, Sonic included, when Shadow finally relents and steps onto that rope for the first time in years to perform with him.
I hope you enjoy!!

Love Letter Across Time 13
This adventure was…intense. He was not a fan of any of it. The world breaks into a jigsaw puzzle so Eggman could run a theme park on energy from someone called Dark Gaia. Turning him into…a werewolf? Werehog? Whatever it was…didn't seem to be an issue now. As far as he could tell. Then he had to fight Dark Gaia after it sucked all its own from him. Not to mention the chaos Emeralds being drained of energy and having to be restored. It…it was a lot. He wasn't in the mood to have Shadow and Amy visit.
And yet, when he came home. Amy was there. With Shadow. Both looked "wonderfully" upset and he just…didn't want to deal with it. He already had to get his wedding ring fixed. Lucky for him it was easy thanks to using melted gold in the areas it broke. Now, he wanted to sleep. He wanted a bath. He wanted food.
“About time, Faker. Amy told me everything.”
Sonic rolled his eyes. Yeah because a good partner communicated with their partner. That shows trust.
“Where are the Emeralds?”
“With Knuckles, on Angel Island. Where they should have been. I was busy with other things. What do you want me to say?” Sonic crossed his arms.
“She is worried you may still be affected by what happened to you when their energy was drained. I want you to come with me to be seen.”
“No,” Sonic saw his confusion and anger mix. “You heard me. No. Take her on a date. She went through hell, Shadow. Take her out to the grotto. Take her to the mall. It has her favorite restaurant.”
Sonic pushed by him. He saw Amy looking at him. She was upset he was denying something from Shadow. He moved on.
“My husband is on his way home. Can you please go? I missed him.” Sonic started to close the door.
“We wanted to meet him,” Shadow blocked it.
“I don't want you to. He isn't ready. Nor am I. This isn't like you and Amy. He doesn't know anyone in my friend group. It has to be on his time and even then, he may not want to meet you and I may end up leaving to go be with him.” Sonic stopped talking. “Doesn't matter. We are still figuring this out. Leave it.”
“Is he hurting you?” Amy asked.
“No. What's hurting us is our schedules. He works and travels. When he comes home, I am asleep.” Sonic pushed Shadow back, making sure to be gentle. “And for once, we will be awake. Can we please…please, have a moment to talk before he has to leave again?”
It was a lie. A good one. Amy and Shadow fell for it once more. Shadow even crossed his arms and mentioned how several ARK scientists took time to call their relatives and visit with them. Wanting that part to remain private because of how schedules worked out. Amy seemed upset that he and Lancelot were struggling to make time for one another and hooked her arms around Shadow's. They were gone with a snap and he sighed and shut the door.
He really hated lying, but how could he explain his relationship? Would they even believe that he was married to someone years into the past? Tch, course they wouldn't. They would call it fake and ask him to make time for them. Amy would go back to asking him to give Shadow a chance so they could all date. He took a deep breath and looked up. Plus, there was whatever happened after the final battle. He had too much to worry about.
He chose to take a bath first. He then ate and cleaned up. Heading upstairs to his room to relax. Sonic checked the drawer and to his surprise, there was a novel for him. Lancelot's journey had ended yesterday. He was taking time to rest and talk with Merlina. As he read how far his knight traveled and to where, he realized that nowhere outside of Camelot had any answers to their current struggle. Meaning by time he was reading about the long journey. Lancelot would be talking with the mage about ideas on what could be done using the desk as a source of magic, at least…on his end. As for entertainment, Lancelot was thankful for the books he sent.
They helped pass the time and he was able to look up at the stars in a whole new light. He even began to look for the constellations in the night sky. Dreaming about what it was like to be among the stars and flying beyond them. The idea of traveling into space alone had the knight asking for more books on it. Sonic would have to get more for sure. And to preserve the journey, Lancelot had it bound like a book. He called it: Planning A Future. It seemed to fit what Lancelot had been looking for.
It was his turn to write about his own journey. He did the same thing as last time. From start to finish, he wrote all that happened. Sparing no detail. The drawer was closed so if Lance had anything to say, he could send it. He kept writing until a knock went off. Sonic put the pen down and stood up. It went off again. No one was on the balcony. He ran down the stairs and opened the front door. Nothing. No one was here. He closed it, locked it and went back upstairs.
Sonic ignored it and focused on finishing what he was writing down. Took a bit, but he finished and capped the pen. He opened the drawer to see a note with one sentence.
Did you hear me knocking?
The hero took it out and looked at the back. It was Lance's handwriting, but ..there was no way. He set the novel in the drawer and wrote a response back that he had heard knocking but assumed it was someone in his time. He closed it and waited. The knock went off again, but he stayed at the desk. Carefully, Sonic opened the drawer again. The novel was gone and there was another note. A longer one.
My king! It worked! Forgive me but it is I, Merlina. Sir Lancelot said the desk was connected to you. I have added to the magic this item possesses. I am not sure how but it seems the connection is limited to this item. The spell I placed will gather in strength the more you and Sir Lancelot talk. Theoretically, if you two continue then perhaps one day. It will transport one of you permanently to the other side. It's still weak but I know you two will be able to build on the magic. I am not sure who it will take first but…that means you could never go back to your original time. I do hope to see you again, your highness!
Sonic smiled and knocked on the desk. He heard a knock returned. Sound worked now. Perhaps…he could fulfill the music request at last. He leaned back and smiled. Maybe he could finally hear Lancelot.

Love Letter Across Time 12
Sonic didn't get a letter from Lance, but he knew why. Both were taking a break and trying to contain themselves. Instead, others wrote to him. Dame Percival sent him quite the book. A list of troubles they had run into since the decree of open education was put forth as law. He knew they would have trouble. Nobles back then loved to have people under their feet. He would not go back on his opinions. Wealth was never eternal. Only great deeds and the victors of the battles fought truly became eternal. All in name. Objects such as money, weaponry and such would mean nothing and they would need to learn that now, not later.
He noticed that his choices did affect history as the days went by. He had gotten a history book for that time period to see if it did change things. Not only did it show the changes. It mentioned how the knights had come together even more and worked as a team. Bring Camelot to a state of tranquility. Which spread to other kingdoms around it. The battles that he once read about were solved with peaceful talks and the ones they couldn't talk out. Well, proceeded with Camelot winning in the end. They never enslaved the town. Only let them be as a sign of mercy. That was enough to change the future in his time even more.
It was nice to see that he could bring some good. Even to their own history. Hopefully he wasn't ruining the rest of it. But, Silver would have visited if he had ruined things. With no letters from Lance, he just kept talking with the others. Soon though, a rolled up letter got his attention. It was the only letter in the drawer.
My king,
Forgive me for being so quiet. After the last letter, I had to step back. I share your mutual feelings. I wish for the same thing. I had to compose myself. If you wish and if you would allow it, may I look into this? May I find a way for us to be together? I know it is selfish of me to request this. That it could possibly take me away from you for days. Yet, if there is a chance…perhaps we could finally be together.
I know we have Merlina. I know you trust her, but our faith in her is still fragile. But if we must rely on some form of magic. We can ask for her assistance. I do worry…that she could use this as a means to betray us. I will reserve this as a last resort until I can ask her. I hope to find an answer for us soon. Before we are consumed by our emotions.
Yours forever,
Lance
I love the ear cuff. I wear it at all times
Sonic put the letter away. Lancelot wanted to travel for information which meant he would get no letter from him for some time. He didn't mind but he would miss him. With no other ideas on how to reply, he wrote a letter that told Lancelot he could do whatever he wished. So long as he was able to come home safely. Sonic put it in the drawer and closed it. He stood and walked to his bed. Now he just…had to wait. He was glad he liked the ear cuff. He has the match to it. A custom made piece. He sent the one with the Emerald to Lancelot. He wore the one with the ruby hanging from it on his left ear.
He opened the drawer again when he remembered he forgot to add something. The letter was still present. Good. He got the astronomy books he bought for Lance. They could be his entertainment on the journey. He pulled the letter out, put the books in first and added to his letter that he managed to get the requested books. He then closed the drawer and sat on the bed.
He could go on his own journey. There would be time. He wrote a second letter for Dame Percival to let him know he would be on a journey and would not be able to respond for a bit. Once that was all set, Sonic took off. Tails mentioned seeing Eggman in some space thing. He wasn't sure what was with Eggman and space lately. Either way, he was going to ensure this time around that nothing would be left floating in space. Eggman always got away so he wasn't worried for his safety, not too much.
Sonic grabbed the Chaos Emeralds. Time to head out to ensure Eggman didn't pull any stunts.

Love Letter Across Time 11
Lancelot had to get a chest for his room. He bound the adventure his king went on. Keeping the pages straight as he added a hardback cover. Making it into a book he could always read should their little portal ever be taken away. It felt wrong to leave such a journey without a title. The black Knight knew what to call it then. His majesty's words often presented lots of colorful alien-like creatures with strange powers. Powers he could wield. It would be simple but it would fit the contents of what he read. He used the ink and quill instead of the fancy pens given to him. Writing the words Sonic Colors as its title. He'd let the book dry in the chest, safe and sound. The same with the little box of letters.
He did wish that he could be with his king in his time. The letters helped give him a connection, but it wasn't face to face. He couldn't hear, see nor touch his majesty. He couldn't go on walks with him nor adventure with him. He longed for it but he lives in reality. Not a world of fantasy. Merlina’s magic was still something he couldn't trust. But if that was truly the only way…no, no he couldn't leave Camelot. That would be far too selfish of him! The kingdom needed him.
He closed the chest and sat on the lid. Well, it probably didn't. Dame Percival was just as skilled as he. Sir Gwaine too had the skills needed. They also had this little desk to consult the king himself. In reality, he probably wasn't needed. Any threat was often taken care of with talks. Instead of fighting. Most kingdoms around Camelot were now at peace. The kind of peace they wished to have for years. So, was he truly needed?
He looked at the desk. Would his majesty allow him to leave the kingdom? To abandon the people for a life at his side. Their king never wished to leave but his Masters gave him no choice. He liberated them from that fate. They could now choose. So, if he did find a way. If Merlina had a way. Would he be allowed to? He stood and opened the drawer once more. Lots of letters. Some to the servants. Each knight had their own letter with their name on it. Then there was his. Rolled up with two new blue quills and yet another gift.
He pulled the quills out and put them with the rest as he looked at the second gift. It wasn't a ring. It was an ear cuff with a chain. At the end was a green emerald.
My love,
I am not mad. I know you wish to help the kingdom. My offer to help shall always remain. I just wish one of us could gain what the other wants. The more we respond. The more I miss you. But we can't change what's been done, not as far as I know. I'll help in any way I can. No matter how far, no matter when I am. If only a time portal existed. I enclosed letters to everyone but I can't always respond to…that many. If you could have them write on a schedule perhaps? It would make it less…time consuming.
I am happy we can all talk but that was quite the pile up. This desk can't handle that much weight. Oh, I forgot to mention I have been repairing the castle. It's…seen better days. I don't quite know when I'll be done but I will keep at it. I still have no idea how to grant your request for music and the books you wish to read seem to be…out of reach for the time being. I'll keep at both though. I will not let my husband down. Not when I can't even see you…or touch you.
I love you
Sonic
Lancelot took a deep breath and held the letter close. So the king felt the same way. It was still too soon but…perhaps he should start the quest to find a way to him? Or perhaps bring Sonic to him. Either way a boon would be given. Two for Camelot, seeing as the king would be back and he would be at his side once more. But the more selfish side would be he went to him and while they received the book of being together. Camelot loses two highly skilled warriors. But they were starting to want more. How much longer would these letters satisfy the other before they began to yearn for more?
He sat at the desk and read the letter again. How to respond to such a confession. Did he request or say he would look into the matter? Would that even be allowed? He would need to shelve this matter for another time. When he wasn't in such a vulnerable state. He stored the letter away and despite the chance that they would in fact see it. He placed the ear cuff on his left ear. He had nothing he could write about and the words would only reflect what his king wished. For once, he stood and chose to get air. Telling a servant that if anyone has anything to ask of the king. The desk and his chambers would be open for the day.

Love Letter Across Time 10
Sonic finally answered the door for once when he heard knocking. He was covered in dust, sweating and the hard work of making cement and laying heavy cement blocks was tedious. So pestering him was not what he wanted. Of course, it was Shadow with Amy at his side. She gave him a warm smile. Shadow merely gave him an annoyed grunt. He was fine with having Karma return the favor of his boundaries being crossed. After all, he did that Shadow. Apologizing to him was good but he had to have extra payback. That was fine, but he didn't have to scowl at Sonic now that he chose to leave him be.
“Oh, Ames, sorry for the glare. I am working on stuff,” Sonic looked at her and only her. Arms crossed.
“We are headed to some Secret Grotto and wanted to invite you,” Amy hugged Shadow's arm. “It's going to be so romantic.”
“I should hope so. You are married. Gotta make each moment romantic and loving. Even if you fight. Communication is the key.” Sonic grinned at her. “Sadly, I really gotta get this done before the cement dries up on me and it will take most of my day, possibly all if I have to run to the store to get more supplies.”
“Can't you put it off? Please? I'll buy more cement.” Amy begged.
Shadow growled. A warning that if he said no and upset her, that he'd be in the doghouse with him. Tough luck for Shads but he was already.
“Ames, I can't. Besides, I have a date with my hubby.”
“You got married?!”
He didn't expect her and Shadow to scream at the time but it happened.
“First off. Yes. We had a private ceremony. Second, he and I agreed to just keep it to ourselves.”
Sonic was lying but he must have gotten better. Not even Shadow caught on. The couple simply accepted it with a shrug. An odd sight but he was glad they weren't prying. It was a half lie on his end really. He was assuming Lancelot wanted to keep their relationship private. He hadn't actually asked yet and it wasn't just his choice. He had ask first.
“Well, if you are sure…” Amy let a sigh out.
“Hey I would love to chat, Ames..I would but I can't let it dry.” He said. “But thank you for the invite.”
He closed and locked the door. Returning to work before the cement did dry up. Meaning all his progress would be halted. He ended up being right. By the time he was done, it took all day. He also had to make a second store run for more cement. However the room was finished, at least…the walls were. Now they had to dry and he could go in and make sure to add another layer over them as extra support.
“Another room is almost done,” He wipes the dust out of his fur and quills. “I have so much space. Still not used to having a place to crash.”
He took a deep breath and headed upstairs. Once more, he was at the desk and opened the drawer. There were…quite a few letters this time. He pulled so many out that he had to sort them into piles. The one that stuck out the most was Lance's. Inside the rolled up paper were more quills. Sonic once more placed them with the rest as he read.
My Liege,
I regret to inform you that by time you receive this letter. The entire castle and its staff shall know our secret. The predicament we were in has been solved thanks to you and I wanted them to know.
They are thrilled they can speak with you once more. I am sure you have seen the pile by now. I am sorry if I have angered you but I feared for Camelot and its stability.
I read your novel. It's amazing you went beyond the stars. To think one could travel beyond our sky one day. A fascinating idea. So you have books on this? If so, may I borrow them? I wish to learn more.
And yes, the ring is beautiful and fits. I am honored you chose me as your lifelong partner. If only I could be with you to celebrate. Alas, we can't cross paths unless but I'll cherish the memories we have made and will continue to make.
Your forever,
Lance
Sonic held the letter close and giggled. Kicking his feet when he read the last part. He literally had a fairytale wedding with a legendary knight. All by the means of an object. No stress or anything, just a silent vow. That was his kind of wedding. Plus, the feelings were returned by just a few words. Not a speech. The entire castle now knew so that meant more writing and reading. Seems as if he would be pretty busy. Oh well, no outings unless it was to ship for supplies, food or adventure.
Just means Amy and Shadow could enjoy their lives without his interference. He should probably tell Tails? Nah, his brother would figure it out. That fox was smart. He would know soon enough. Now…onto the pile. He also had to see if he had astronomy books. Ones up to date. He probably didn't, but it would have to wait. He had a lot to read and possibly a lot to write back to. He would need more paper and pens.

Love Letter Across Time 9
The meeting went nowhere once more. The knights were all waiting on Lancelot to give them any updates on his vote. He had been putting it off but they had grown impatient. He held no limit. He could wait for hours for a decision to be made. Even days if one could not be reached. What he could not stand was getting no word from allies or those who he trusted. The growing worry that his king was hurt or worse. With no way to actively see into the future though, he could only wait.
He could try Merlina, but the trust was fragile at best. She remained in court but under strict observation. At the behest of their king, who believed in giving many a second chance. Given time along with deeds that benefitted the kingdom. She could prove that she had learned from her mistakes and foolishness. Even so, Sir Lancelot could not trust her with his secret. She could possibly use that as grounds to blackmail him or worse, reveal he had a connection to the king.
He knew though. The council was growing weary of him taking his time. Did he reveal the desk to them? If he did, would they test it out? Would they seek to keep him gaining access? He was starting to be too selfish. He had to think about the Kingdom and its needs as well. The people needed the king's wisdom.
He opened the door to his chambers and entered. Closing it swiftly behind him. The knight headed straight to the desk and opened the drawer. The papers were in there with a letter and a ring. The books were gone. His king was back. He was sure he would be given an answer soon. He pulled it all out and took a seat. Closing the drawer in case his king needed access to it.
My dearest,
I'm sorry I did not respond in a while. I just returned from an adventure with my brother. The next letter once I have rested will be quite the novel. I hope you enjoy long stories. As for the proposals. Well, the nobles can't keep education to just them. I say go for making it open to all. It will ruffle some feathers, but in the long run. Wealth means nothing. Many rich in my time lost their wealth and never regained it. Make sure to pass that onto any who find open education an issue.
Keeping education away from others is unfair and unjust. Blame me if you wish but I can't stand the idea of the wealthy pulling these kinds of stunts. Forgive me, I am far too exhausted to keep my emotions in check. I will be resting after a warm bath and meal. I'll write that novel out afterwards.
As for the ring, I wanted to match the one I married. I hope it fits. If it doesn't, send it back and I'll have it sized until it does.
Forever yours,
Sonic
The knight placed the letter in the box. He pulled the armored glove off and slid the ring on. It did fit. He pulled the glove back over it. Best to keep it hidden. Next was the proposals. They came in time. He had to meet with the council to give the vote. Now he has what he needs to make this fair. The black Knight knew though. He wanted to keep this to himself but…he had no right.
He stood and opened his bedroom chambers. He waved a servant down. Telling them that he needs help getting the desk to the council room. The servant became bewildered by the request but with a please added. They agreed. He helped carry it to the council room. This would be a one time thing. He would return it to his room after.
They arrived first. Giving him time to write a response to the king would be proof that it worked. He then waited by the object. The servant stood by at his request. After all, it would be returned to his room. The other knights joined. Baffled at the sight of the desk themselves. No one sat. They stood and waited.
He then began to mention what he discovered and how he managed to have their King help in their current predicament. Minus the love letters currently stored in his room. He held up the rolled letter he wrote. Opened the drawer and put it in. He said they had to wait. That they had to be patient as the king just returned from a journey on his end and was resting. In the meantime, he showed the king's writing on the Open Education idea they had been stuck on.
Despite not having proof the desk worked. They all seemed thrilled that their king somehow could contact them and still help. They proceeded with the plan. But all agreed to return once they put the announcements up. Lancelot was told to guard the desk but he spoke up about it then. That the desk would be returning to his chambers. They became baffled once more. Dame Percival was the first to speak and ask if he wished to guard something related to the item.
He didn't answer but mentally he hoped she didn't catch the shift in his posture. There was a secret. He and his king had been exchanging letters with information many could use against him. And since he was now referring to him as “my dearest”. The implications would be enough to have his head cut from his neck.
Dame Percival didn't seem to understand, but put a hand on his shoulder.
“I see. You must miss the king deeply. Very well. His majesty’s desk shall remain in your chambers. Safe. We must keep this to ourselves. The king is among us thanks to divine intervention. Nothing must befall this item.” She looked at the knights. “Is that clear?”
They nodded. Charging out to make copies of the announcement to post in town. Even Dame Percival and Sir Gwaine left to aid their fellow knights. He had the servant help him move the desk back to where it needed to be. By then, he checked and saw the letter was gone and a novel indeed lay awaiting him.
“It is true. The king can communicate with us! Thank Gaia! Our mighty ruler is indeed still among us!” The servant ran out.
Screaming about the desk and its properties to all they passed. He closed the door and grabbed the novel. Closing the drawer and sitting on the bed. His king wrote him from start to finish about a tale of him saving something called Wisps. A tale he would read happily as he waited for whoever wished to talk with him. He warned his king that he had informed the others. Once they knew, he would be asked to rule over them from across time itself. He knew the king would be gravely disappointed. Yet he felt as if the king would feel proud he chose to do so of his own free will. He would know by the next letter.

Love Letter Across Time 8
Sonic groaned as he entered Camelot Castle and shut the door. That adventure was such a pain! Literally! He hit the floor and mentally wished he had flexed his quills more during the fight! Eggman had taken full advantage of their down time and built a Space Theme Park with a mind control ray. Everything was going so well at the start! The end got real dicey for him. Good thing the Wisps helped. He didn't want to go through that again, ever. He’d leave that adventure to Shadow and Amy.
He pushed himself back onto his feet and stretched. He needed a bath. He needed to check the desk for an answer and books since it had been a while. Lancelot must be worried sick. He had so much to do already. The first thing he did though was head upstairs. He still had some bruises and a few minor cuts but nothing he hadn't dealt with before.
He opened the drawer to see the books were back. Multiple letters were waiting for him. He took a moment to read them. Each mostly about the book and how Lancelot thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the story itself as a whole. The last letter was attached to a stack of papers.
My Liege,
It appears that we are in need of your wisdom. The council recently got asked for the means of making education public. The nobles aren't happy about this seeing as they have been forced to pay their servants proper wages already. So education is something they hold for those of higher status. We are unsure of what to do and have been desperate in trying to placate the wealthy. Please respond as soon as possible with an idea that could help.
I noticed you haven't responded to the last few letters and I grew worried but I remembered you go on adventures often. Hopefully this last one treated you well. I look forward to hearing about it.
Yours truly,
Lancelot
Sonic took a glance at the proposals sent his way. He could see both sides. The nobles used their education now to keep the poor under their foot. To ensure they wouldn't have equal understanding. But no one was rich or poor now. Everyone was equal. So gatekeeping education was pointless. Not to mention rude since everyone was allowed to have access to the materials for a better life. He personally didn't like when the rich tried to stomp on those that helped them obtain that wealth.
He denied the noble proposal but verified the open education one for everyone. He also made it clear that the nobles would have to learn how to be more open minded if they wish to keep the wealth they obtained. Writing that the rich in his time were no longer rich due to poor choices and rebellions from the lower class. That should scare them into being quiet and accepting their new life. He pulled the ring box from his quills out. He made a quick stop at the jewelry store. The ring was done. He hoped Lance liked it and that it fit him.
He made sure to mention that the ring was made to match the wedding ring he had been given. A mark that they were now official. Even if they couldn't exchange vows the proper way. He still considered them official. He set the proposals in first, followed by the letter with the ring placed gently on top of the stack. He then shut it and stood up. He needed a hot bath, a warm meal and rest. In the morning, he would write out a detailed log of his latest adventure and send it to Lancelot. He was just too exhausted to think straight.

Love Letter Across Time 7
His king was quick to send the books to him. The drawer was full with a letter and two new quills. The weather outside had cancelled all plans he had been given along with his assigned tasks. Training in the train would only result in illness and these rookies weren't ready for that part of the training to begin with. They had to worry about endurance for such things later. Meaning all meetings and training got put off. For now at least.
He was sure by the morrow that the weather would clear and the sun would be high above them once again. Giving them plenty of reasons to be in the sun. He much preferred to read in the sun then the pouring rain. It did allow him the chance to talk more with his king. At least the weather had one boon.
My dearest,
As requested, the rest of the series. I look forward to your thoughts when it is over. I personally enjoyed it myself. I always go back to read it once again. Just to relive it. And no, not every writer is as elegant. Those are the ones who write history and other works. The kind that I have indulged in but not as often.
History is nice but it always focused on the wars and battles once fought. Something I could never keep my focus on. I digress. I have the ring on. Thank you. This ritual does not make you naive. Any king would be honored to marry a knight as talented as you.
I must ask this. Since the quill Ritual, have you felt anything from my end? Or are the rumors about the ritual false? Supposedly, we should feel how the other feels. Unless, since you aren't…nevermind. Forget I asked. It was silly of me to think it would work across the time stream.
Forever Yours,
Sonic
He hadn't responded to the letter. He stored it away. The king wished to know if he felt anything from the quills. Much to his dismay, he didn't know what he meant. The quill Ritual was forbidden. Any records of it were lost before he reached adolescence. When asked why, they simply said to no longer perform such a vile act. He placed the quills behind his left ear anyway. Both the first and now this time as well.
But the king was trying to ask him for something that was lost on purpose. He would have to mention that to him. And despite the dismissal, he knew well what his Liege wished to finish writing. Lancelot wasn't alive in his time. A fact he had accepted long before Sonic left. So if this ritual did give them benefits. Sonic would receive none due to his death. A shameful thought to him. His king clearly wished to have another form of connection. Was his king lonely? Did he not have anyone to share his life with before this?
Granted the idea of him having to share irked him on some level, but a king needs heirs to carry on a family name. Knights were sworn to never take a family and always serve the king. Giving up the hopes and wishes for a family. In return, their names and great deeds back legends and their names were immortalized. Lancelot crossed his fingers and looked at the letter box. His king was feeling melancholy. He pulled some paper close and began to write. He didn't really have anything in mind for the letter. Simply write whatever he could think of to ease his king's sorrows.
If he was able, he'd go through the drawer itself. Twas a silly thought. It could clearly transport small items. No amount of luck could ever let them reach through and touch the other. He finished his letter with the sun beginning to sink. Tucking it into the drawer and turning in for the door. It wasn't a waste like it had been in the past. He was able to enjoy it. Even if the rain bothered him.

Love Letter Across Time 6
He heard banging and groaned. They knew no boundaries now, did they? Then again, Sonic crossed Shadow's plenty. It was only fair he received the same treatment. He did his best not to let it grate on his nerves. The good news for him though was two more rooms had been completed! All restored to their former glory. really made the progress quicker. Tails was so cool. His machines did so much to help him and he was grateful to have their help. He had them power down in the next room that would need to be worked on. He chose to ignore the door and head towards his room.
Letting the ones knocking keep at it. He had an idea who it was. Tails didn't know. His brother walked right in because he had a key. Everyone else had to knock, but it was getting rare he ever answered. The quiet was nice and he didn't feel like keeping the world company. The more he was away from it. The more he felt bad for bothering Shadow so much. Hopefully he enjoyed the quiet spots he managed to race him too. Especially that grotto. He could take Amy. It would be romantic. When he got to his room. His first stop was the desk.
Since the quill Ritual, he had been waiting for something to happen. Nothing really did. He ended up pulling the quills from his arm and sticking them behind his left ear. Ensuring he'd never lose them by pricking his head. Still, nothing really had been felt. A disappointment really. He should probably ask Lancelot if he felt any connection. But he was far in the past. Was it because of the time gap? It would make sense considering the Black Knight wasn't alive in his time.
He opened the drawer and found a letter inside. It was rolled up this time. There were two new quills and a ring. Sonic laughed and leaned against the desk with one arm. What was he thinking now? He carefully pulled the letter first. Then pulled the ring and quills out. Like the other two, he stuck them behind his left ear as he read.
My Liege,
I am not sure of this custom so this may come from pure naivety on my part. I enclosed a ring and more quills. You said men could be with men. That our love in your time would be welcomed. So I would like to ask that we make it real. I don't know when I grew so selfish but I have chosen to keep this out secret. I do not wish to share you. Not yet.
I am reading the books you sent. The stories are intriguing and I am thoroughly enjoying them. The story of forbidden romance you sent reminds me of us at times. I wonder if we're the model for such a tale. I haven't finished it yet, but I am unable to keep myself from the pages.
Do all writers in your time capture such emotions with such elegance? Or are some unable to grasp such an idea and write horrible stories with no flow to them? Acting more of a court jester who can't read the room. I am curious about this.
Oh, I bring news. Camelot is thriving. The people are as well. You may view yourself as a terrible king but we all owe you a life debt. Your words spurred this kingdom into an era of peace. The land and its people now flourish. Even if the council takes days. Forgive me, I am…what did you call it, complaining? I don't remember the term. You only used it once while here.
Another curiosity of mine, my king, these adventures of yours. Do they take long? If so, how do you cope with the stress during these long periods? Who tends to you if you are injured or stressed? I worry. I am not at your side to keep you safe.
Yours truly,
Lancelot
Thank you for the box. I shall cherish it
Sonic leaned back. He needed to find a way to test out music. He still had no idea what to do. He pulled his left glove off and pulled the ring on. It was no simple band. The metal was gold with obsidian and a Garnet as the stones. But the craftsmanship was beautiful. The gold was made into vines that had been bent to circle around the stones. The garnets formed a circle with the black obsidian stone in the center. He wondered if Lancelot had one similar but with a blue stone. Or did he not have one. He got up. No time to waste.
He rushed down the steps and towards the front door. The knocking stopped. He knew why once he opened the door. They were gone. Once again, he was glad. He pulled his glove back on first. He locked the castle up and went to town. Heading to the jewelry store first. He didn't know Lance's size. It would have to be a guess. Time to go gambling. He walked in and up the counter. He found some gold bands and a lot of options.
“Good afternoon, do you need any help?”
“I do. I need a gold band with a sapphire.”
“Who's the lucky one?”
They got the keys to unlock the merchandise and pulled the selection they had. All stock pieces from the looks of it. Not good enough but this would take time and patience on his part.
“Sir?”
“Sorry, I'm actually the lucky one.” He pulled his glove off and showed her. “If it's possible, could you make a copy of this but with Sapphire and add an emerald at the center?”
He let her eyes linger on the piece. She gently touched the metal and was clearly in awe over it. Once the shock and awe wore off. She told him how beautiful the ring was. She could easily get someone to copy the ring's design and flip the stones to match. It would take some time and cost a hefty amount of rings but Sonic didn't flinch. He had so many that they had begun to gather dust. He barely scratched the pile. For Lancelot, he'd pay any price.
He accepted the deal and pulled the glove back on. He made one last pit stop before heading back home. Changed his gloves out to fingerless. Not as thick and now he could put the ring over it. A risk but he wanted to show it off. How often did a knight purpose with such a gorgeous piece? Not to mention when the knight has to actually go above and beyond to find something nearly as gorgeous as they were.
Sonic returned home and locked the door on his way in. Heading back upstairs to his room. He returned to the desk and opened the drawer. There was another letter and one of the books he sent the black Knight.
My Liege,
Forgive me for this short letter. I just finished the book. The story enthralled me to the very end! I saw that it had a list of similar books. May I borrow them? I wish to read this epic tale to its conclusion.
Yours truly,
Lancelot
Sonic laughed as he pulled the book out. He went to the closet and put it back. Pulling the rest of the series out and placing it in the drawer. He then started to write his own response. Even doodled a hand and the ring on the side when he brought it up. He made mention of a gift that was being made but didn't say what. He did include two more blue quills. He always returned the favor or tried to. He also asked Lancelot if there was anything he could to help the council. Not just with hastening the choices but helping them out with ideas or issues they had been stuck on.
He didn't mention the music. He already had in the last letter. Plus he was working on it still. He was gonna have so many projects thanks to his hubby. The castle repairs, the ring, the music and lending books. He wasn't going to be bored at least. He sticks the book series in the draw first with the letter on top. He then set the quills next to the piece of paper. Sonic shut it and relaxed. Now to wait.

Love Letter Across Time 5
He found himself waiting for the next response. It took some time as well. Something he found troubling. The knight understood that gathering items was part of the slow response. There was also the matter of his questions. The days he waited proved to trust how patient he could truly be. No matter how much he wished to have the response to be swift. There was much to answer.
He found himself walking more and more. They didn't seem to have many troubles. Even the people in the town were thriving. Things were peaceful. Something the knights were very proud to see. Even with the king taken. His wisdom saved the kingdom and now brought them to some strange era of prosperity. His feet brought him back to his room. Despite the sun being high in the sky. There was no one to help and no meetings to attend, as of right now.
The black Knight opened the drawer to find it full. With a letter rolled up on top of the pile. He sat down and picked the letter up first.
My dearest,
I fear the music will have to wait. I am not sure how to share that with you quite yet. I will work on this request and deliver the promise to you post haste. Enclosed in the drawer are some personal favorites from my own book collection. Return them when you are finished and we can talk about them.
The paper and pen (what you call ink) is also in the drawer. We have perfected Quill and Ink. No need to dip, simply pull the cap off and start to write. And do not worry, I will make sure you never run out.
And if you truly wish for this to stay between us, then who am I to go against that? But, if you think I can help. Please feel free to send any documents my way. An outside eye is always helpful, is it not?
And bards have become singers in my time. They sing on grand stages to millions of people. They are paid so much to sing now. If only you could see it. I'll have to try and get pictures.
Forever Yours,
Sonic
Ps. I enclosed one extra gift. A matching wooden box set. One to store our letters in.
Lancelot began to unpack the items and found the wooden box. It was made of oak, a wood that they had a hard time working with but sometimes managed to make things out of. The box itself had simple metal clasps. On the lid was the crest of Camelot burnt on. A matching set with his king. To add to his joy, the king was leaving the decision to him. Entrusting him to make that choice. Lance set the box down and stored the letters he already had in the box.
The knight leaned back and looked up at the ceiling. On the one hand, he could keep this secret. He could make it so his connection to the king was his and his alone. Ensuring that anything he wrote would stay between him and the king. A selfish desire, one the king himself made clear he would uphold from his end.
On the other hand, the kingdom needed Sonic's wisdom. It needed the king. Even if they could rule in his stead. There were still many things they could learn from him. It will be painful for him and risk his true feelings to be found out. His title and rank would be stripped and he would lose access to the desk. Perhaps even be beheaded for such a scandal.
He would need more time to think on this matter. For now, he would wait. Perhaps his majesty was also mulling this over still. The answer he got didn't feel final. It just felt as if he had made a statement based on very little time. Either way, he would have to think and sleep on this situation.

Love Letter Across Time 4
Sonic barely had a chance to get home before being bothered by Shadow. The hedgehog knew he didn't want to bother and yet at Amy's wish, came to see him. As sweet as the gesture was and as romantic as Amy must see it as. He didn't want to bother. It wasn't like they had used harsh words or anything. The last time they raced, Shadow took the equal win and sauntered away. Sonic let him. But the next time they met up? Well, he guessed Shadow wasn't in the mood. He just grumbled out “always when I don't want to deal with you”. He knew then that it just wasn't fun for the hybrid.
As fast as he was, he did often miss cues. But once he caught on, well he did his best to honor the boundaries. He stopped asking for races, stopped standing near Shadow. Didn't say his name or even look at him. Anything he did in the past to annoy Shadow instantly came to a halt. He didn't even attend Amy’s wedding, not in person at least. He attended from afar. Just to let Shadow and her enjoy the day to the fullest. It sucked but he didn't want to annoy anyone. There was no fun in that.
He heard a loud knock this time. Not a light one. He chose to stay out of sight and waited. Shadow would either break the door, which would suck and mean more repairs for him. Or, would leave. There was also the option of him just…Chaos Snapping into his home. He really hoped that didn't happen. He had plans. Things to do. Another knock came and he just went up the stairs quietly. He'd leave. Shadow was never one to stand completely still for long.
Once he was in his room, he closed the door and walked to the desk. Opening the drawer to see a new letter. He took a seat while still hearing the knocks. He was rather persistent today. Not that it would make him answer.
My Liege,
Before I begin indulging my desires. I must ask about this portaling desk. Do you wish me to inform the others? It could lead to boons to your kingdom. Perhaps even help hasten the council's desicions. What you choose will be done. If you are asking what I wish to have happen though. Well, the answer is simple. I wish this to be for just us. As selfish as it may be to deprive the kingdom of your words. I find myself at odds in wanting to share this. I'll carry your orders out as I always have but that's what I wish for.
Now to my selfish desires. You once spoke of books and music. Do you have favorites? If so, may I inquire about them? Perhaps even borrow some? I wish to read them. Even discuss them at length with you. And your music, do the bards play at court still or do they play elsewhere? What songs do they play and sing?
And one last thing my king. My paper supplies and ink are…limited. If you could perhaps provide some for me? I would be most grateful.
Your Knight,
Lancelot
Sonic heard more knocking and mentally rolled his eyes. Knocking wasn't going to open that door nor get him to open it. He was wasting time and energy. Lance wanted to know his favorite books, needed pen and paper, oh and he had to figure music out. He doubted sending music sheets would help. Could he play the music on the desk? Maybe even in the drawer? He would have to figure that one out later.
As for the others. Lance made it clear. He wanted no one else to know but also knew it would help Camelot out. A way to speak with him and keep him in charge without being an overbearing presence. But he didn't want to have them serving him like that. That would be something else to think about too. He would need to get things gathered up first. Sonic had time to do that.
There was more knocking but it turned to banging now. Shadow was not going away this time. The blue hedgehog pulled a tin close to him and placed the folded letter inside it. He could keep them safe and sound. He should get one to match for Lancelot. It would probably have to be wood. He'd look into that too.
Sonic stood and ran downstairs. He was at the door and opened it. He went to say hi but Shadow wasn't there. Seems he finally had enough and left. Which was fine for him. He had things to gather. He closed the door and ran back to town. But he knew Amy and Shadow would be coming by again soon.

Love Letter Across Time 3
The other knights learned of his request and found it most odd. They didn't seek to return the desk but they proposed additional questions as to why he wished to keep it in his personal quarters out of the blue. Even Sir Kay, who seldom questioned those of higher rank, wished to know more. He wasn't against them knowing why. It would allow them to have a chance to speak with the king on a personal level. A boon for the kingdom to gain future knowledge.
But a part of him wished to keep it private. To have it just be their secret. The issue at hand now was if he had the right. Most knights would often run the country as a council. Judging laws and matters in the manner Sir Sonic would. Weighing all options and scenarios out before coming to a conclusion. It delayed decisions but it made each new law fair and just. And now that he knew the desk worked. They could increase the speed by simply asking the king himself.
If his king knew he had moved the desk to his personal quarters, would he be angry? Would he demand Sir Lancelot tell the others it worked? Whatever his Liege wished, he would carry out. Regardless of how he felt. Especially if it would alleviate the guilt he had over leaving them a burden. But he wished, just this once, to be selfish.
He must ask the king for advice at once. Normally, he would have asked right away before taking any actions. Yet he wished to sate his deepest desires the moment he knew his king could talk with him again. He heard footsteps and spotted Dame Percival back. She was speaking with Sir Gwaine. They were having a serious conversation. It would probably lead to yet another Round Table meeting. He began to meander. Only this time, his path took him back to his chambers. The desk near his bed with the light shining from the outside.
With quick steps, he was opening the drawer. There was a letter. Rolled up, waiting for him. He placed the sword against the side as he sat to read.
My dearest,
You write just fine. I am not educated in the art of fine words and speech either. What you see is me merely slowly writing out my thoughts. Whether my Grammar and spelling is off will show my emotional state. As for our correspondence, well I would love to keep it. Just knowing we can talk across time means a lot. And of course, I'll always tell you about my time and my adventures. Who else could I tell but you?
In return, If I may make a request of you. Can you tell me how Camelot fairs? I may not be able to be present but mayhaps I can help from this position? Remember you and the others always have a choice. Live as free as the wind and follow your desires. Not just mine.
Oh and never hesitate to ask me anything. I am an open book to you, My Knight. Whatever you wish to know is yours. You must simply ask. I'm afraid I can not magically read your mind across the time stream. Needless to say, I wish to know much about you as well. If you ever wish for a gift, please say so. I'll send it.
Forever yours,
Sonic
Lancelot felt his lips turn up. He really did wish to continue. Even said to ask anything and for anything he wanted. So clearly, that meant he had some grounds to be selfish. At least their personal responses. As for the others, he still had to ask his king. If he said to share then he hoped to set rules for who sent him what. His majesty had to run things on his end and possibly, this end as well. A task that would probably exhaust him. No one was there to tend to his needs once his day was over with.
He pulled out the spare parchment, ink and quill. If he was to continue this, then he would need a lot of paper and ink. Perhaps he could ask his life to send him some. The paper he used was so refined. The knight looked out the window. The sun would be gone soon. He lit a candle to give him more light.
He was allowed to ask for anything and ask anything. Now what could he ask. He would need more paper and ink. Perhaps he should start with small inquiries. Ask about the little things about his Majesty's personal life. He remembered his Liege mentioned books as a pastime and music. That would be a good start. Something light that his king could answer and feel comfortable sharing. He began to pen his response. He made a mental note to make the letter equal. He in turn would include his own personal taste in music and books. There wasn't a lot of time to indulge in such leisure, but he always tried to set time aside for them. A knight of the round table had to be versed in many subjects.
It was a short response, but he was happy to know he didn't look like a fool with his poor writing. To think the king wasn't educated as well, yet wrote with grace. He hoped to learn how to write like that as they talked more. As much as it pained him to, he did make mention of where the desk now was and if his Majesty wished to have the other knights informed of this. Now, he must wait. Should the king say yes. He will inform them and show proof with actions, not words. If not, he would keep it to himself and indulge in his selfish desire to keep the king to himself. For now at least.
He leaned back and looked at the burning flame. Once he put that out, he would have to turn in. He wished to stay up but he had a job. That took precedence over his wants. See to the needs of many then one could see the needs of their own. He blew the flame out as he stood. His king would reply. It was just a waiting game.
