This one's old but I haven't posted in a while, I'm still so mad.

I made a spreadsheet of the shots from ep 3 so slowly but surely I'm getting down to reanimating it, even if not in its entirety, some scenes need serious love and I will stand by that.

I just wish they put effort...

UnsurprisinglyRen's writing has been such an inspiration for me ever since I discovered this fic. Not only has it motivated me to animate and illustrate some scenes, but also to take on writing myself. Ciel is bored and disobedient. Sebastian is trying his hardest to get the boy to realise he's *very interested* in him. But all Ciel realises is that some games can't be so easily won and that his demon is getting out of hand. With tensions high and games afoot Ciel is held on a high wire of uncertainty; torn between what he needs his demon to be and what his demon is by nature.

Ohhhh boy

Spoiler alert for ep 3 and comparison to the same scenes in the manga.

Also tw for some triggering moments from ep 3, please proceed at your own risk.

So this is going to be part 1 and I'm gonna start with shrimple 🦐 things because I don't have my big tablet with me so the suggestions are made with what I have available.

So first of all, the RCiel flashback, absolutely disgraceful execution.

I'm not going to go into it fully yet, but for example this scene:

In the manga you can see the horror in his eyes.

When using only black and white, one is forced to convey emotions in their most pure form because of the color restrictions. That's why it works so well, plus Yana is a master of shadows and compositions primarily containing black.

The "animated" shot does not convey even remotely the same emotion for me.

Firstly because of the style they have chosen. You can't have his eyelashes be this bright and expect to portray fear properly.

Secondly because of the colors.

IT'S SO DAMN BRIGHT.

Yes, the manga is also bright but that's because it wants to point your attention to his eye. And the emptiness that comes with the terror in it.

The blue in his eyes and the two highlights ruin any convincing part of this shot left. Too much detail, TOO MUCH. It works in the manga because it's made with as little lines as possible, the detail takes away the effect.

So here is what I added according to what I mentioned:

It's darker on the side, creating a greater contrast with the eye. I have included only one highlight, just like in the manga and have made the eyelashes darker. I also added a bit more detail under the eye for a stronger effect (just like it's done in the manga).

(Please keep in mind I'm not claiming to be an expert and I'm not claiming to be better than the studio itself, this is just how I would have done it to fit the aesthetic and story better)

The next one is Sebastian related.

So I used Book of Atlantic as reference and fixed his face a bit. I also made the shot darker because OF COURSE IT WILL BE

(Once again, it's not the best, but at least the hair reminds of the og Sebastian and at this point, that's enough for me)

He's giving again, he's a bit, just a tiny bit more serious again, you see how big of a difference to his personality it makes.

It's paying attention to those details that keeps a character in character.

It's this scene from the manga:

I love it's composition because look at how full and sad and overwhelming ociels panel is compared to how small and cornered sebs one is.

Not only is he so small, but he's also off center IN HIS OWN panel, pushed as much to the left as he can be to portray how distant he is to ociel now.

Its not about the speech bubble, it's about unconsciously separating them from one another.

And here's what the stupid ass studio decided is best

Also IT'S SO BRIGHT YET AGAIN.

He's supposed to be lonely in this shot, left aside, pushed away, unwanted.

DON'T PUT HIM IN THE MIDDLE YOU DUMMIES FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

I put him in the first third of the composition, put the light source off camera, cus we don't need that brightness, fixed his hair and made IT DARKER YET AGAIN. I also had to draw some of the background, I hope it doesn't stand out too much.

ANYWAY.

No gif cus there's a 10 pic limit that I didn't know about.

This is just the first part, I'll get to the animation and specific scenes later. I know I didn't cover any of the important ones but I can't do much without my tablet 😔

All of those shots, that mind you, 2 of which are not even animated at all aside from Sebastian's mouth, took me less than 2 hours to work on. Yes, the base was already there, but that little effort makes THE DIFFERENCE, IT MAKES SUCH A DIFFERENCE!!!

Once again, I'm not claiming to be an expert, I just really love this story and want it to get the care and proper adaptation it deserves.

And if you think I'm being nitpicky...

Yes.

I absolutely am.

Because that's how you make a high quality product.

By THINKING. And making THE APPROPRIATE CHOICES TO MAKE THE WANTED EFFECT EVEN STRONGER.

Tw: pure vent and lots of screaming

I sincerely thought that I'll be able to keep this inside but the latest episode has made me mad beyond reason so I shall let the anger out, even if it's only for my mental health's sake and no one ends up reading it.

EXCUSE ME BUT WHAT THE LEGITIMATE HELL IS THIS ABOMINATION OF MINDLESSLY COMBINED MANGA PANELS WITH NO THOUGHT, CARE OR YEN SPENT ON ANY EFFORT ASIDE FROM SHINY LOOKING STILLS

I am an animator.

I have fallen in love with animation ever since I started watching anime.

My first anime was Kuroshitsuji.

My reason to be where I am today, creating what I do, fighting for what I believe is right and worthy of passion comes from Kuroshitsuji.

The reason I feel things the way I do comes from Kuroshitsuji.

And some business head only looking to steal as much of the already-limited-budget as possible IS NOT GOING TO BE THE REASON I FOREVER DESTAIN THE STORY AND CHARACTERS WHO COMPRISED MY FIRST EVER CONSCIOUS FEELINGS TOWARDS THE CRAFT OF ANIMATION.

Was it TOO HARD TO ACTUALLY FEEL WHAT THE CREATOR WANTED YOU TO FEEL WHILE I'm not even gonna say reading cus its more of an EXPERIENCING THE MASTERPIECE THAT THE KURO MANGA HAS, IS AND CONTINUES TO BE NEARLY 20 YEARS AFTER ITS CREATION???

Was it THAT. HARD. TO PUT EFFORT INTO THE SOUND DESIGN AND TIMING OF YOUR SHOTS AND HOW THEY CONNECT TO THE OTHER SHOTS WITHOUT MAKING IT LOOK LIKE A FANCY POWERPOINT PRESENTATION???

I feel sorry for every animator who has had to bust their bum to make a shot look pretty and "appealing" even though that's absolutely not what the aesthetic of this project demands it to be but that is partially me being very attached to the og style and also finding NO REASON WHATSOEVER FOR THE COLORS TO BE THIS BRIGHT, MAKING THIS ANIME BLEND IN WITH EVERY OTHER ANIME FROM 2020 ONWARDS BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT PEOPLE LIKE RIGHT??? THAT'S WHAT KIDS THESE DAYS NEED - SOFT, CUTE, BIG EYED, PAINFULLY BRIGHT POWER POINT PRESENTATIONS WHO MAY OR MAY NOT MAKE NICE PC WALLPAPERS FOR A FEW WEEKS BEFORE THEY'RE FORGOTTEN FOR THEIR LACK OF UNIQUENESS AND RESPECT TOWARDS THE MATERIAL THEY ORIGINATE FROM

How is it possible for you to take some of the strongest scenes in the story and execute them in such a boring and cheap way, it's almost like you were doing it on purpose at this point.

Do you guys notice how the new seasons are OBVIOUSLY made by people who have a business and not a creative brain???

They don't care about respecting the aesthetic, ever since the first episode of the school arc when they literally trademarked "Yes, my lord." to be a phrase that sells the character more than it respects it.

The animation is so unbelievably average, it's unreal. The key frames are pretty, sure, but they're not what makes an animation, THEY'RE WHAT MAKES A MANGA AND THE MANGA IS ALREADY BEAUTIFUL BUT MORE THAN THAT, IT ALREADY EXISTS?!?

THE POINT OF THE ANIMATION IS TO MAKE IT MOVE, MAKE IT AN ENHANCED EXPERIENCE THAN READING THE SOURCE MATERIAL, MODERN ANIME HAS FORGOTTEN THAT.

Everything, EVERYTHING IS ABOUT THE MONEY AND HOW THE BIG BUSINESSHEADS CAN PROFIT FROM THE AVERAGE VIEWER BECAUSE THE STANDARD IS DYING, WE'RE BEING SLOWLY MANIPULATED INTO CHEAPER AND CHEAPER PRODUCTS AND IT ALL SUCKS AAH AND I'M SO TIRED OF IT

You know what didn't suck? THE VOICE ACTING, ABSOLUTELY AMAZING EXECUTION ON THE VAs PART, AT LEAST THAT ARTFORM IS GOING STRONG

But that's not the point...

The point is. We're not doing anything to change what's happening.

As I said, I don't know how Yana feels about this and if this is indeed what she wants from the show, then so be it.

But I find that hard to believe.

But that's just me.

All and all, I'm probably reanimating this episode because f everyone, f clover works producers, I hope they get the profit they're so desperately punishing us for cus maybe, just maybe, they might start thinking about preserving the aesthetic of their projects more than their fancy heating toilets
