Some of you might remember a couple of years ago when Scarlett Johansson sued Disney because she was making significantly less money for Black Widow than was guaranteed in her contract because so many more people watched it on streaming than in theaters, how there was a massive misinformation campaign from Disney that a ton of people on this website (and Twitter and other social media) bought into: That she was a greedy bitch who didn't respect people who needed to stay at home during the pandemic (I believe the word "ableist" was thrown around with aplomb) as opposed to someone who just wanted to be paid what she was owed. What was literally in her contract!!! And where everyone who took more than a couple minutes to actually look into and think about the situation could figure out that her issue wasn't with streaming itself, but with how little streaming was allowed to get away with paying her and other actors. But of course, a lot of people just saw the chance to dunk on a rich woman, and didn't think about it beyond readying some snarky tags and hit reblog. And in doing so, threw their support behind a much wealthier, greedier studio head who is already using similar language to describe the current strike.
Anyway we're going to see a lot of that from studios now, especially now that actors have joined with the WGA and it's easier to sell them as rich and greedy than writers, because of this cultural stereotype we have of all Hollywood actors as celebrities. Don't fall for it. SAG-AFTRA represents people like Tom Cruise and ScarJo but it also represents the kind of people who played a Borg in two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager in 1997 or who had one line in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as an enthusiastic audience member. Most actors are not crazy wealthy, and in fact, if you're a big TV fan (especially older TV and genre TV) that likely includes some actor names that you know, who played supporting roles in your fav shows, or who were even a star in something decades ago but haven't done anything major since. The AFTRA side also represents people like radio broadcasters. But even beside that, all workers deserve to be fairly compensated for the work they do, and the threat of replacing them with AI, or real actors being required to sign contracts to allow their likenesses to be used by AI forever without paying them, is an existential threat to acting as a profession in general. The actors are in the right. The writers are in the right. The studios are in the wrong. The studios have exploited new technology to get away with horrifying labor practices for years and their feet need to be put to the fire. Circulate the articles about how poorly the Orange is the New Black cast was compensated for making one of the defining shows of the early streaming boom, and of the studios saying they want to force writers to starve and lose their homes. Don't get distracted by propaganda aping progressive-sounding language about wealthy celebrities. Focus on the real enemy, the truly greedy fat cats who care more about money than people and art: the studios.

There also needs to be a button for “this is the 5000th time I’ve read your fic because I’m having a horrible day and this is the only thing in the world that always brings me happiness.”

Look, this is probably going to end up as an unpopular post, because God knows the level of brainrot capitalism and fast consumption caused in people's brains, but I'd rather not get TV shows for a while if it means writers get their rights defended and recognized.
Entertainment can't come at the cost of fair pay, healthy work environment and ethical practices.

But also consider starting with!
Mass Effect
You want your decisions to impact gameplay? This is your jam. You decide what your Shepard is like-- looks, conscience, psionic ability, etc. It's such a good story/world/characters that it sucks you in, and I feel like if you get frustrated with the controller you'd still want to play until you got better.
Tumblr media
(default female and male Shepard. You pick, then customize)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's a big cast (personal highlights: Tricia Helfer, Seth Green, Claudia Black, Carrie-Anne Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Freddie Prinz Jr, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Keith David. They really breathe life into the characters.)
The voice actors are brilliant, and there are three games so you don't have to crawl out of the lil mass effect hole you fall down for a little while if you don't want to. You're the commander of a spaceship with a cobbled together crew, dude, I don't know what else a person could want. There's political maneuvering, military discipline, aliens & alien tech & alien romance, AND space battles. The cast is fantastic, so's the story.
Tumblr media
Shepard touches a thing you maybe shouldn't have, gets a vision, then leads the team of military buddies and alien allies that are gonna avert doomsday and save their corner of the universe. It's very cool. I've only played through once but I'm gearing up to give it another go and make different decisions this time.
OR CONSIDER
Red Dead Redemption 2
Have you ever wanted to be a cowboy? ...or person in a cowboy hat who rides a horse but is more land pirate than ranch hand? (That takes longer to say, I see why they went with "cowboy".) Behold:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's got the same "giant map lets you roam and get used to using a controller" vibe as Odyssey, only this time YOU CAN BOND WITH THE HORSE! THE DIFFERENT BREEDS MAKE A DIFFERENCE! THOROUGHBREDS ARE FASTER, THE ARABIANS ARE SMALLER, THE BELGIANS ARE CHILL AF...YOU CAN APPROACH A HORSE IN THE WILD AND TAME IT. YOU FIND THE APPALOOSAS WHERE THEY SHOULD BE! THE TURKOMAN IS APPROPRIATELY GORGEOUS!
ahem.
Look at this absolute unit
Tumblr media
and this beauty:
Tumblr media
Hunting's a big part of it, if that impacts how much you want to play. It's slower paced than the other games I've mentioned -- you cook your own food, your hair grows so you have to cut it, it's more living life than the others, and it gives you a chance to really sink into the world and take it at your own speed. It's super gorgeous, too.

Why you should start with Assassin's Creed: Odyssey
1. Kassandra.
Tumblr media
2. Also her eagle, Ikaros. You get to fly with him when she sends him up to scout!
Tumblr media
(Phobos is pretty cool, too. There's this jumpy attack thing you can do leaping off his back)
3. The map is huge, which means there's lots of time for you to run around getting used to the controller (and if you run into an enemy too hard, you can just run away and come back when you've leveled up)
4. You get to hear the Greek pronunciation for so many names and places!
5. There's fighting, but also lots of sneaking, so you can kinda ease into it
6. The armor!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Honestly the game is just super pretty (that's a vineyard on Lesbos on the left). And seeing all the landmarks in their former, lived-in glory is awesome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. The sea shanties! The women's crew sings a couple of ones the men don't. And the crew hypes you up every time you win a battle.
Tumblr media
7. Herodotus travels with you!
8. Guided mode puts all kinds of helpful icons and tips on the hud so you're not just bumbling through the greek countryside blindly.
9. Aim assist. It helps until you get better at doing it on your own. Or if you don't feel like you've got that much focus in you.
10. P A R K O U R! You can literally run up anything, and leap off all of it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I couldn't find a picture but you can climb to the tippy top of your ship and fling yourself into the ocean, too.
Tumblr media
It's also been out long enough that the internet has the answer to your question/has a walkthrough of the thing you're stuck on.

Their size makes them arrogant and slow.  Like their guns.  But you don’t need a gun to use gunpowder, you just need a spark.
