In the year prior to their execution, the Romanovs were held in captivity at Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg as Russia disintegrated into civil war. During this time, the Romanovs had very little contact with the outside world, much of their loyal staff and servants were dismissed, and many of their personal belongings were confiscated.
However, it was during this time that the family began receiving correspondence from Tsarist supporters wishing to help the family escape captivity. The letters arrived in secret, stuffed in small parcels or tucked between the pages of a book to disguise their intent from the Bolsheviks. These letters continued for some months as the supporters discussed with the Imperial family on how they could possibly be rescued and seek refuge outside of Russia.
One such supporter was a man named Mikhail. His family, or so he told the Romanovs, had been long-time supporters of the Imperial family for generations. Correspondence between Mikhail and the Romanovs continued as the White Army (Anti-Bolshevik forces, though not necessarily supportive of the Tsar) advanced on Yekaterinburg. Knowing that the Bolsheviks would fall to the better equipped forces of the White Army, Yurovsky– head of the Cheka– ordered the family to awake and dress.
He told the Romanovs that they were being moved to a safer location in anticipation of the violence that would ensue when the White Army arrived. Once dressed, he had the family herded into the sub-basement of Ipatiev House. There, after several minutes of waiting, Yurovsky read off the order to have Nicholas and his family executed. Nicholas only had time to say “What?” before he was killed by several bullets to the chest. Alexei, Alexandra and Olga fell soon after. As smoke filled the room, the Bolsheviks left momentarily to let it clear. When they returned, they found the remaining grand duchesses still alive– protected by the jewels sewn into their corsets. Bolshevik soldiers finished them off with bayonets.
Mikhail and his fellow supporters arrived several hours later as the bodies of the Imperial family were being carried to a truck. Acting quickly, they slaughtered the Bolsheviks present and searched desperately for any signs of life in the Imperial family. Anastasia was the only one found to still be breathing, but barely. With several bayonet wounds to her chest and stomach, she didn’t have long and Mikhail– seeing no other option– bit her.
Anastasia awoke several days later. Mikhail explained what happened and who he was; a vampire. He and his coven mates had occupied rural Russia as far back as the reign of Tsar Michael I and had been adamant supporters of the Tsardom. Initially, Mikhail had wanted to rescue all of the Romanovs, and give them the chance to escape peacefully to live out the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, he had not arrived soon enough.
After the explanation, Anastasia was devastated. Her family, murdered, and now she was going to live eternally, feasting on human blood. It went against the very nature of everything she had been taught. But, she was grateful to Mikhail all the same for saving her life, and she reconciled with herself that so long as she only hunted criminals, perhaps her soul wouldn’t be entirely damned. For the next few years, she stayed with Mikhail and his coven, learning about the new world she had been born into. As news of the Romanovs’ execution got around, rumours began to persist that one or more of the Imperial children had survived. Anastasia was the most prominent candidate, and suspicions began to arise. Fearing they would be outed, Mikhail and his coven relocated to Sweden where they stayed for the next few decades.
Eventually, Anastasia felt she was ready to travel on her own for a while and see the world. She set off with a few belongings, and changed her name to Anya Mikhailova, in honour of the man who saved her life.

𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐧 — 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬 .
Historically, the Imperial family primarily spoke English and German in their private lives, as Nicholas spoke Russian and Alexandra spoke German. The Tsarina did not learn Russian until after her betrothal to Nicholas II, and though she had a good accent, she spoke it very slowly. Thus, their children were brought up primarily speaking English. However, they were also well-versed in Russian, French and Italian.
Anastasia, herself, knew very little German. Her former English teacher, Sydney Gibbes, once remarked upon meeting the imposter, Anna Anderson:
“It was clear that she knew no Russian nor English, which were the two languages always used by the Imperial family, but on the contrary, she spoke German only, which was a language the true Grand Duchess Anastasia could not speak.”
An instance during her time entertaining wounded soldiers suggests that Anastasia had little knowledge of the language— soldiers were said to whisper ( in German ) as the Tsarina passed by, that she was the “German Bitch”, something that Anastasia and Maria did not understand until they brought it up to their sisters. They were scolded and said to never repeat it again.
During their imprisonment at Ipatiev house in 1918, the Romanovs were forced to speak Russian at all times, as the guards could not understand English or German, and were afraid that they would discuss plans of escape.
In regards to my portrayal, Anastasia is fluent in Russian, English, and French. Her English and French is spoken with a strong accent, noticeable in her patterns of speech. Although she was once learning Italian, after the Revolution, and the years she spent with no memory of her life before it, she fell out of practise with the language and never picked it up again. She still has not learned German, and probably never will unless necessity dictates it.
