Stream of Consciousness - “Something Borrowed” Made Me Blue
I just netflixed the RomCom “Something Borrowed” but I definitely can’t chill right now.
While the characters are written to be wonderfully flawed, there are quite a few stereotypes and awfulnesses that make it a bit hard to focus on the actual plot. For one, Darcy is made out to be the “villain” throughout most of the film, because somehow way too long ago it was decided, that leading ladies in “chick flicks” shouldn’t be sassy. Why? Why can only the (often gay) best friend, the side kick or in this case the enemy be loud? Yes, Darcy is obnoxious, as she herself states, and as later turns out not exactly faithful herself; she loves attention but is that a crime? If so, arrest Hollywood. In the meantime let’s recap who she is as a friend best friend to Rachel: She throws her a party, she originally tried to set her up with Dex and she constantly asks her about her life which isn’t even a given for all friends, let alone supposedly self-centered ones who are only weeks away from their weddings. Darcy trusts Rachel completely, listens to her and openly values her friendship. But because she doesn’t have an inside voice, she deserves for her platonic soul mate to sleep with her fiancé? It is never really explained why this girl-on-girl, but more importantly friend-on-friend crime is supposed to be so okay. It is just expected that audiences will agree someone so flamboyant (but female) has these things coming because they seem to have had it “unfairly” easy in life. To quote Clueless: as if. I don’t really think anyone ever has it that easy and going for what you want shouldn’t be a negative quality. It rarely seems to be in men, anyway...
The next beautifully sexist thing is this whole self-esteem thing. Darcy has it, which makes her bad. This is because, as wonderfully indicated in this and whenever someone decides to play that first One Direction hit (”You don’t know you’re beautiful, that’s what makes you beautiful) knowing or feeling like you might be even the slightest bit attractive automatically makes you a bitch. You must be full of it if you don’t buy into every magazine, every ad and every “beauty programme” telling you you need to fundamentally change your aesthetic. So Ginnifer Goodwin’s character - even with her face - believes that no “hot” person could ever be into her and we’re supposed to love that and relate. How is that supposed to work? Objectively speaking, few people are as goodlooking as she is, so do we now feel worse about what dares glare back at us from the mirror? Or are we being lead to believe that we only see ourselves worse than we actually look? If so, why does it matter? Why does the nerdy girl always need to get the makeover to become interesting to those who never bothered to notice her before she learned about contact lenses and tweezers? (Though - don’t get me wrong - I love The Princess Diaries. Yes, even at my age. Shut up.)
And while I could go on about the terrible character of Dex, the missing depth of Ethan, the undersold inspiration that is Claire and the fact that Rachel hating her job is only mentioned in passing because how could that be important to her life if she gets her romantic interest, I should probably go to sleep. This late night rant has turned into a not that early morning one.
Right. Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the sexism bite.

pluviophile
(noun) A pluviophile is defined as a lover of the rain. They revel in the smell of the wet streets and grass, the sound of raindrops hitting the window, and the scenery of the sky. They find the grayness of the sky and the atmosphere both peaceful and beautiful.  (via wordsnquotes)
Merci madame la pluie!
