i keep seeing well-meaning posts about tagging on ao3 claiming that 'no archive warnings apply' means a fic is fluffy and wholesome and maybe smutty but can be trusted contain nothing upsetting. and from the bottom of my heart, please, this is so wrong. like, even aside from the fact that 'upsetting' is a very personal definition, it literally just means that none of the big four archive warnings apply, and i promise you it's very possible to write a DEEPLY upsetting fic that contains none of those things.

I remain so very angry and annoyed with the season 2 finale in regards to Scott. It is truly baffling to me why you would ever in a billion years write your protagonist, whom you are trying to portray as virtuous, examplary and kind, in such a fucked up way.

Don't read this post if you can't take criticism of Scott. Seriously. Just scroll the fuck past it, it's properly tagged, I'm even putting it under the cut.

There's the obvious part with Derek. How gross, violating, fucked up and also, quite frankly, plain stupid it was. The whole plan would have actually been more effective if he had just... talked... to Derek. Planned with him? Made him a part of it, instead of a tool.

Also, to be honest, it was horrendously fucked up toward Gerard. And I'm saying that as a "kill Gerard" person. But there's killing someone quick and efficiently to eliminate a threat and then there is poisoning someone so they will suffer horribly for months to come before succumbing to it (or finding a cure because you gave them too much fucking time). It's incredibly cruel and that baffles me, considering the show usually likes to have Scott take the moral high road of mercy. But not only does he sign Gerard's death warrant, he does it in an incredibly cruel way.

The main thing that pisses me off about it though is Stiles.

Stiles, who got abducted and tortured to teach Scott a lesson. And the writers just never gave that any payoff. This could have been an incredibly emotional and angsty angle for their protagonist!! His best friend, who has had his back and been at his side this entire time, was hurt because of him - the guilt! The emotional payoff of this!

...Instead, Scott literally doesn't even comment on Stiles' incredibly visible injuries. These aren't even injuries easily to hide and you could say yeah Stiles wouldn't want to worry Scott so he never showed him.

That's what his face looked like. And Scott stood right next to him. But didn't say anything. Didn't ask. Just gave Stiles a pad on the back about Jackson and Lydia getting back together like "that sucks for you, buddy" - my man, Stiles has bigger problems than his crush getting back together with her ex. Look at his fucking face.

How do you write such a setup and don't pay it off in any way and make it even worse by making your protagonist look like a shitty friend? (And people who are upset that there is a "Bad Friend Scott" tag on AO3 truly genuinely have not been paying attention to the fucking source material. Even if you prefer the instances where he is a good friend - and they exist - you can't deny the times he wasn't and you shouldn't be surprised that, just like how you focus on the good, others may choose to focus on the bad.)

What really drives it home is the very end of the episode though. I hate the end of the episode with a burning passion.

Stiles and Scott out on the lacrosse field during summer, training. And Scott complaining that he has nothing - that's his exact choice of word. Because he has no girlfriend, no popularity, no lacrosse. Nothing.

Stiles: "Dude, you still got me."

Scott: "I had you before."

This exchange. This exchange fills me with a burning hot rage. Because yeah, exactly, Scott doesn't have nothing - he still has his fiercely loyal best friend, who literally got tortured because of him - but eh, doesn't count, because Scott had him before.

It perfectly highlights Stiles' best quality, his unbreakable loyalty, and Scott's worst quality, taking the people around him for granted and also somehow making everything about himself.

I don't get a single one of these writing decisions. I do understand flawed characters. I love flawed characters. But these are not treated as character flaws. They are just written in this one episode and whoop we move on. Next episode, Derek and Scott are totally fine, Scott never actually apologizes, there is no growth from this. It's just a blib and next season we are pretending that he is a born natural leader and meant to be an Alpha. Based on fucking what?

8.Most fluffy ship: I think that Sterek is the most fluffy ship because, despite his anger, I've always seen Derek as this soft, abused boy who puts on a front to keep himself safe, and Stiles is the goofy, over-excited boy no one really sees...until Derek.

9.Most angsty ship: This is definitely Stargent because Chris has feelings that he knows deep in his heart are wrong, but can't stop them, and Stiles sees so much of himself and his father in Chris that it just feels like too much. They both have to overcome a lot of internal turmoil to be together.

32. Favorite ship for hurt-comfort: Stetopher for sure. Chris and Peter see their boy hurting and can't help but want to fix it...by any means necessary.

@iamaslutforjatp Sorry for not getting to this sooner! I didn't get a notification that I had anything in here until yesterday!

I have a Stetopher pen pal fic that I'm absolutely in love with, but it requires a specific mood that I haven't been able to get into lately. In it, Chris, who is married to Peter, is a soldier who's at war, and Stiles' teacher asks the class to write letters. Obviously, Stiles gets Chris and ends up dumping all his angsty feelings about everything into these letters over time. Eventually, Chris comes home, and they meet in real life.

3. I'm not sure this is really in the spirit of the question, but the thing I like most about my writing is that it helps me process feelings. My writing tends to reflect my current mood, which isn't always a good thing lmao. That's why you sometimes get super depressed or angsty sections in my stories.

4. I really enjoy reading period pieces, and have thought about doing one of those, but struggle with the verbiage.

I went with 17 because most of my stories have been written because some lyric or another catches my interest enough to inspire a story. Charlotte Sands has a song called 6 Feet Under and this section of the song just screams Stiles:

The idea that's currently circling is that Stiles is struggling in the aftermath of everything that's happened, and even away at school, he can't seem to move past it. Whomever I end up shipping him with, runs into him at the local bar or supermarket or whatever and sees how bad it is, even tho no one else has noticed that Stiles is covering all his pain with smiles and gooiness.
