“ think of it as empathy. ” his dad was dead. the person his mom was had died when his dad did — apparently, jim would have been a bigger fan of her when the uss kelvin was alive and well — and he wasn't forced into starfleet, but at the time he felt like there was no other choice. dead end in iowa, or the chance to see the stars at the price of more school and possibly death. he's glad he picked here. “ i'm just saying, i know your situation a little better than you might think. ” he takes a swig from his bottle, offering her a grin afterward. “ i'm jim, by the way. uss enterprise. ”

something jim admired about spock was his determination. right now, it annoyed him. this mess was something no one could have predicted, it left him with half a department and jim couldn't help but feel some GUILT. they were alive, at least, but left behind on a planet. collecting soil and rock samples! the enterprise remained stationed above the planet, ready to beam the crew up and leave at any given moment. he didn't think spock was going to continue doing the work of the whole team, and that was his fault. “ COME ON, SPOCK. this is, like, five people's work at least. i can help with something. ” he puts his hands on his hips, eyebrow raised. “ i can scribe, or something. or sort things. come on, let me help! ”

“ yup, i understand that too. ” now, he needs to make it through without any mention of GEORGE KIRK. his father left him with massive shoes to fill, ones he fears he never will. “ MY NEW CHIEF OF SECURITY. 'm pretty sure you know how the last one went. ” how else did the red shirts go? steven lasted much longer than he expected — YEARS. years! he hopes balfour will last decades. “ we're all pretty excited for you. your sister, especially — elspeth, right? ” he prided himself on knowing each and every member of his crew. their families, however, were a different story. “ got some time? i can take you to meet some of the people you'll be working with. ”

"Captain Ducote, yes." It was simply a relief that Kirk hadn't asked if he was Bryce or Eleanor's son. That was the usual question, of course, and most recently coupled with a sense of pity that made his skin crawl. Singing the praises of his captain was much easier, in the end. Balfour wore the smile to prove it. "They've mentioned that a few times themself." He straightened, just slightly, and did not make the joke that he might have made with Ducote to Kirk. It was different on the ship. "It's good to meet you. I understand we'll be working together soon?"

cousland. it was a name that jim knew well, as did most of the people in the fleet. HE KNEW WHAT THAT WAS LIKE. living up to his father's name, that brave man who gave his life for his crew. he hated talking about it, especially with people he barely knew. so he'll avoid it. for now. “ the northumberland, right? ” he asks, turning his head to look at @highaver. “ you're with captain ducote now, right? they're a great person. i'm sure you knew that, though. we were in the academy together. ” different classes, but the sentiment stands.
