Well now that I’ve spent a good hour double checking and sourcing information that I know will get me blocked. I think the main reason I didn’t fall down any radfem pipelines as a kid, despite like actively following MANY radfem accounts on instagram (I was going through my old middle school instagram like what the actual fuck), was because I’d see white woman talk about how men are like biologically evil bc of all the horrible things they’ve done to the world and I was like…. “But wouldn’t that apply to you guys too since you’re white?” and then I misunderstood the argument being made as more of a ‘anyone who has the power to systemically harm other people is biologically evil’ and that was too many evil people for a 12 year old to conceptualize so I decided to just ignore the posts that said stuff like that.

Anyways, moral of the story: the children yearn for intersectionality and also being a little mean to white people WILL save your soul

I’m writing this at 3am because it actually kills me that this argument is still being made. I completely understand why people think this, but porn addiction just like isn’t a thing. Porn dependency maybe, but either way, porn is not the reason why men are violent towards women. Men are violent towards women because they hate them, because they feel entitled to them and because the patriarchy allows them to do so. I feel like this whole rhetoric comes down to wanting to pathologize male violence in order to make sense of it, but that’s a whole other discussion and this is already going to be annoyingly long.

Anyways, the first time I ever heard the phrase ‘porn addiction’ was at a youth sermon at my evangelical church when I was like 14, and I was immediately wary about the way they were using it because and bc it sounded like a repeat of the ‘video games cause school shootings’ argument. Come to find out, that Evangelicals in particular have invested millions into studies “proving” that it exists. And also into just spreading the concept around in general, particularly in the Global South. It’s really just very well done propoganda. Even if you think it’s true, it’s undeniable that Christians aren’t largely responsible for popularizing the theory.

Because it is literally just a theory, and not in the way gravity is a theory. Porn addiction is not recognized in the DSM-5-TR, and though some studies have found correlation between sexual violence and high porn use, none have determined any kind of causation. It’s more likely in my opinion, that men who are already sexually violent just watch a lot of porn. Or that the million other factors (inadequate sexual education, the existence of the patriarchy in general, puritanical cultural norms and shaming). After all, no amount of violent porn will make a non violent man into an abuser. This whole idea just takes accountability away from violent men, and it’s so obvious too. Men were sexually violent long before porn existed and it’s not like they’ve gotten worse comparatively, so I really don’t even understand why so many people fall for this stuff?

It reminds me of when some random guy on tiktok said that women who enjoy dark romance must have porn addictions and implied that they should be institutionalized, and the majority of people who saw that video were arguing that it was somehow a feminist take. Because of that whole mass hysteria, I actually talked to my developmental psychology professor about whether consuming violent sexual media can make a person sexually violent in regards to the popularity of dark romance books for young women specifically, and she said that the best way to ensure that people practice healthy sex is just good sexual education. Like I do believe straight women when they say that men are being weird sexually (I just can’t wrap my head around the idea that they’re any weirder now than say, 200 years ago, or even 60 years ago when porn was less accessible), but regardless, the best way to make sure you don’t internalize any dangerous or unhealthy sexual habits is just to receive a solid sexual education, honestly at any point. I think some psychologists that DO think porn addiction is a real thing agree with me on that, they call it ‘sexual scripting’ or something. Basically, if violent porn is your first introduction to sex and you’re never corrected on your perception of it, that can change how you view sex. So the solution is then just, correct the incorrect perceptions and assumptions, which is pretty easy. But anyways, I’m not arguing that porn has never given anyone unrealistic expectations about sex lol.

It’s very easy to make nothing burger statements about vague addictions (I say vague bc researchers have no idea what amount of porn use would even be maladaptive ((OR EVEN WHAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED PORN)), let alone when it would go from a dependency to an addiction. Which is why I wish y’all should just use the phrase ‘porn dependency’ instead of ‘porn addiction’. It’s actually accurate and also acknowledges that the maladaptive porn use is a result of other issues) but ultimately, it’s wrong and even harmful. I know some psychologists also view what you describe as porn addiction as an obsessive compulsion, which I think holds merit, though obviously that description also has its issues. It’s very likely in my opinion that people are recognizing a variety of different underlying issues manifesting in a similar behaviour. Nuance is complicated though, and porn addiction is a simple explanation and bogeyman.

TLDR: the phrase porn addiction is very directly linked to evangelicalism and neocolonialism, it is not recognized by the DSM-5 or APA, there’s no actual evidence that porn causes men to be violent, men have always been violent and it’s a weird kind of modern hubris to think that this is as bad as they’ve ever been. Also, advocating for good sexual education for kids and young people will do so much more to stop sexual violence than spreading the idea that porn addiction actually exists (these are a bit mutually exclusive, if you can make the connection between evangelicalism+porn addiction+puritanism. Just look at the mess going on in Nigeria, but I digress). Also also, the actual term porn addiction is probably not accurate to what you guys are actually describing. Words do mean things and they hold a lot of power.
