The Tsaatan (or Dukkha) are an ethnic minority who fled to Mongolia from Russia during WWII. It’s a small group, less than 300 people according to the most recent census, mostly living near Tsaagan Nuur.

They herd reindeer for milk, which they make into yogurt and cheese. Over centuries, the reindeer have been bred to have spines strong enough for riding. They hunt for meat, killing a reindeer is rare.

This young Redwinged Blackbird was a nice surprise yesterday. At first I thought he was a Starling, but the views of sides and back made it clear. He has fall on his body! It has been very interesting with the Redwinged Blackbirds this season. Somehow I feel like they are more coloful this year. I never noticed the yellow and orange hues so much. Or maybe the babies just never made it to the feeder cam so frequently before.
