This is just too cute I can’t 🥺
Not only the sun moon joke, or the title of scholar, but also the struggle with salutation. It is so real…… (Or lack of struggle for him, actually?)

The term "book of the dead" doesnt really give you perspective to how big a lot of Egyptian funerary texts are.

Imhoteps book of the Dead is 64 feet long.

A priest of my acquaintance sent out an email this week that seemed highly dramatic for 7:14 AM on a Thursday. He absolutely condemned the kpop demon hunters movie in no uncertain terms, calling it a vessel for possession and an urgent evil. Initially I rolled my eyes. I lived through several moral panics as a child, including the memorable experience of sitting through an extremely vehement, hour-long sermon against Harry Potter. (A sermon, btw, in which the only words I understood were the name Harry Potter, as the sermon was, for better or worse, in German, which I do not speak.) Now, I have not seen the movie, but I have seen many of you fangirling about it on the dash and I have heard a couple of the songs, including the one that I THOUGHT was including actual phrases of the Dies Irae. Okay, dumb secular songwriters are known for using the Dies Irae as shorthand for Doom and Scary and Edgy. Whatever. What I didn't realize even when I read the priests email, is that the words of the Dies Irae that they use were changed to include the phrase "maledictus erus in flammas aeternam"—which means roughly "you will be damned in eternal flames." That is uh...that is NOT AT ALL in the Dies Irae and is completely opposed to its message, which if you don't know, is an extremely consoling if sobering look at divine judgement that ends with the words "Pie Jesu domine/Dona eis requiem." ("Gentle lord Jesus/Give them rest.") It's a plea for salvation, not a condemnation to hell. This alone makes me uncomfortable. The priest also characterized the song as a "conjuring." That sounded wild but I am not remotely an expert on obsession/possession and this priest is very well educated and experienced, so on review it seems fair to go with his evaluation to me. Is it possible that the writers just did too good of a job making their bad guys bad? Maybe, but ehh I'm not gonna risk it one way or another. I'm not watching the movie and I'll avoid hearing the songs again. I just felt uncomfortable not saying anything, and I know this is really rambly but I wanted to explain that without thought/really reading the Latin, I found it stupid too. So yeah. I can share the original email as well if anyone's interested. Don't do demons, guys.
#and yeah i know the eastern idea of demon is not like the western idea of demon#but bringing catholic hymns into it makes that argument invalid#kpop demon hunters

I’m thinking about how growing up really means growing humble. To be mature is to say you’re sorry. To be mature is to think about other people. To be mature is to take responsibility for yourself and your actions and other people but also recognize you don’t control other people. To be mature is to ask for help. It’s recognizing that you aren’t the only one, it’s recognizing that you are a part not the whole, an essential part even but not everything, that you can be small and that’s ok! That’s what it means to be humble. And all of those things—saying you are sorry, asking for help, doing just what you can do so others can do what they can do—really all are part of a healthy childhood. Almost like whoever will humble himself like a little child will be greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
