Pattaya Floating Market – A Unique Experience
Pattaya Floating Market, a riverside attraction in Pattaya, showcases the beautiful Thai riverside living community and their authentic ways of life.
Established in 2008, the market is spread over an area of 100,000 sqm and features over 340 shops and water vendors. The market is divided into four sections, each representing the four major regions of Thailand, the North, Northeast, Central and South.
When planning a trip to Pattaya, add Pattaya Floating Market to your itinerary. It is one of the largest man-made floating markets in the world, where you can discover everything from traditional handmade toys, silverware, textiles, little boutiques, local Thai delicacies, traditional Thai massage, and more.
Pattaya Floating Market is built in traditional Thai-style architecture with wooden houses and shops built on stilts over the lake, giving visitors the feeling of being in a traditional Thai village.
The Vibe of Pattaya Floating Market
What is it about markets that make them so interesting? The array of merchandise on sale, colourful little trinkets up for a bargain, the amusing banter of the sellers or the fragrance of the fresh cut flowers at the florist’s shop.
Markets are deeply immersed in the local culture and speak volumes of the history of a place. When the market you’re trying to find is of the floating kind, it just makes the experience more exciting.
For most of us, when we think of groceries, we think of chores. Here in Pattaya, they do things a little differently. Pattaya, once a tiny fishing town on the east coast of Thailand, is now a bustling city that hosts a myriad of travellers each season. While downtown Pattaya is known for its thriving party scene, the thing that lures many other travellers to Pattaya is the floating market.
The concept of the floating market originated as the communities alongside the river were one of the first places to be densely populated, like most towns. With rivers and canals running through the cities, waterways served as the most suitable transportation.
In Pattaya, the natives of different regions came together to sell their local merchandise to earn their livelihood. What once started as a daily market today is a favoured tourist attraction.
A Haven for Shoppers
In the floating market, you can find a hoard of merchandise, from silverware to toys, spices to silks. Fun adventures like the tail-boat ride or the amphibious boat ride can also be experienced by those in the mood for exciting escapades.
The market’s offering keeps changing depending on the harvest or the catch of the day, and a hoard of merchandise from fresh farm produce to the best catch of the day, like lobsters, crabs, and the works.
For the lovers of all things vintage, keep an eye out for the antique sellers, who are a few but are ones to look out for. Notably, in this market, one can find garments from different regions of the country, each bringing its unique origin and applique.
Take a Boat Ride
Visitors can also take a boat tour of the market, which is a great way to explore the various shops and vendors. The sheltered wooden platforms alongside the river are perfect for strutting around and glimpsing the happenings. However, if you’re in the mood for some adventure, try to rent a small boat for an hour or two and have fun circumventing your way through the hustle and bustle.
Try Local Delicacies
One of the highlights of the Pattaya Floating Market is the food. Visitors can enjoy a meal at one of the many floating restaurants on the market. Visitors can find a wide variety of traditional Thai food , such as Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, and Papaya Salad. There are also food vendors selling Chinese, European and Indian food.
Enjoy the Cultural Shows
Another popular attraction is the cultural shows that are held at the market. Visitors can watch traditional Thai dance performances, Thai boxing matches and cultural exhibits. The shows are held in an open-air theatre located on the market.
Love this post? Pin it for Later
The vibe of the floating market can be felt even before you reach the location, as the banter of the vendors and the wafting street food aromas can be felt in the areas around the market. Much like the farmer’s market in western countries, Pattaya’s floating market is one must-visit attraction!
The market is open daily from 9.00 am to 8.00 pm. Entry to the market is ticketed, and the tickets are readily available at the local stores or online. Visitors can take a taxi or a bus from Pattaya to the market. The market is located about 10km from Pattaya city centre.
Grab a local snack while you stroll through the various attractions in this magical auction.

Experience the Cultural Extravaganza of the Chinese Lunar Year 2023 in Thailand
Chinese Lunar New Year, also known as Spring Festival, is one of the most popular festivals in Thailand. It is an important tradition that is celebrated by Chinese people all over the world.
The dragon dances through the streets as the red lanterns light up the vicinity, and a vibrant energy overwhelms every corner of Thailand. The aroma of traditional delicacies fills the air, and firecrackers echo through the cities.
The streets come alive with the sound of music and laughter. The Chinese Lunar New Year is not just a celebration of a particular event or season but a reflection of the unique culture and heritage of the Thai people.
The Rabbit symbolises grace, diplomacy and sensitivity and is the zodiac animal for the 2023 Chinese Lunar New Year. It is the fourth of all 12 zodiac animals, including the Rooster, Dragon, Dog, etc. People born during this time are said to possess a gentle and refined nature, making them well-suited for careers in fields such as art, literature and diplomacy.
The last time the Lunar New Year fell on the year of the Rabbit was 2011. After 12 years, it’s time to welcome the return of this gentle creature.
In Chinese culture, rabbits are often associated with the moon, representing purity, tranquillity, and elegance. The Rabbit’s influence is believed to bring a sense of calm and serenity to the coming year.
The Origin of the Chinese Lunar New Year
The history and cultural significance of Chinese New Year in Thailand are much more complex and nuanced. But just for our readers, we have put together a summary of the origin of this popular holiday:
The Chinese New Year celebration in Thailand had its roots in the 19th century when many Chinese immigrants came to the country to work in the tin mines, rubber plantations and other industries.
They brought their culture, traditions and customs with them, including the celebration of Chinese New Year.
Over time, the festival became an important cultural event for the Thai-Chinese community and began to be celebrated by people of all backgrounds.
Traditional lion and dragon dances, parades, fireworks, and the exchange of money-filled red envelopes are some of the striking features of this festival.
The celebration marks the start of a new lunar year. It is a time for families to come together, pay respects to their ancestors and wish for good luck and prosperity in the coming year.
How the Chinese New Year is celebrated
The celebration begins on the lunar calendar’s first day and lasts for 15 days, ending with the Lantern Festival. This year it starts on the 22nd of January.
During this time, people clean their homes, decorate with red lanterns and couplets, and prepare traditional foods. Red is considered auspicious and believed to ward off evil spirits.
One of the most exciting parts of the Lunar New Year is the Lion and Dragon Dance, where a group of people dressed in colourful lion and dragon costumes perform acrobatic movements to the beat of drums and cymbals. Fireworks and parades are also a big part of the celebration.
It is also a time for gift-giving, and it’s customary to give red envelopes filled with money to children and unmarried adults. It is a way to share good luck and prosperity for the New Year.A Lantern Festival takes place on the final day of the lunar year. People hang beautifully crafted Chinese paper lanterns from their homes, typically during the New Year’s first full moon. The streets light up in red, making it a beautiful sight.

Aging Gracefully! Celebrating a Decade of Comfort and Care: Anandam Turns 10
Anandam is a unique club for the elderly located in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. For the past 10 years, the club has provided its senior members (over 60 years old) a comfortable and peaceful environment to socialize, stay active, make new friends and involve themselves in useful activities. Today (16 January, 2023), Anandam is celebrating its 10th anniversary.
“Anandam was established to answer the most important question that elderly people have on their minds when they retire ‘What Now?’ as one night suddenly they realise that they have nothing to do after years of being busy,” explained Narendra Singh, President and co-founder of Anandam.
“It becomes practically impossible to pass time. Anandam replaces the ‘What Now?’ question with ‘What’s Next?’ What activities they should involve in which will not only help them pass time fruitfully but add value to society,” continued Singh.
The Indo Thai News team was in Indore to cover the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) 2023. We had the opportunity to visit Anandam and find out what sets it apart.
Here, we found a group of extraordinary elderly people working together with a holistic approach to help the senior citizens live more fulfilling lives.
On a sunny winter morning last week, we were greeted by Singh, S. B. Khandelwal, Secretary and co-founder and other Anandam members at the club. We sat down for a chat at the front lawn of Anandam under a clear blue sky.
Anandam is different from your typical club house. It is focused on various activities to keep the senior citizens mentally and physically active and healthy.
There is a library consisting of over 1,000 books in Hindi and English – all donated by members and well wishers. The unique thing about the library is any member may take any book(s) without having to enter the details.
Members who borrow a book from the library generally donate a few of their own books when they return the book. That’s how the library has grown over the past 10 years.
There is also chess, carrom and table tennis for those who prefer more physical activities.
One of the most popular programmes at Anandam that fascinated us is the “Voice of Seniors”. It is a competition among senior citizens, wherein seniors sing a song, recite a poem, or tell a story. The winner receives a cash prize of Rs. 51,000 and the runners-up gets Rs 21,000.
Anandam also places strong emphasis on socialisation and community engagement. With their aim of giving something back to society, the members of this organisation started the “Vidya” initiative — the flagship social welfare programme of Anandam.
The “Vidya” initiative started on 15th June 2016, with the mission of fulfilling the educational needs of deserving girls from low-income families. Under it different amounts are distributed as Annual Scholarships among meritorious female students.
Through its “Vidya” initiative, Anandam has contributed so far around Rs 25 Lacs to meritorious girl students.
Anandam also has a unique library, which includes various books from different genres donated by the members who have joined Anandam over the years.
What Makes Anandam Special?
For the Welfare of its Members
Tying up with premier hospitals for discounted medical treatment of members
Organising regular lectures by specialist doctors and eminent personalities
Arranging free medical camps
Monthly birthday celebration, music and bhajan programmes
Indoor games – chess, carrom and table tennis
Library and internet facilities
Welfare Activities by the Members
Vidya initiative
Regular medical check-ups and grants for medicines for multi-disability children of Anubhuti Vision Sewa Sansthan
Provision of ration for the needy older people
Employment-oriented training for poor women

A Day of Joy and Celebration: Thailand’s National Children’s Day
National Children’s Day, or Wan Dek in Thai, is a fabulous holiday in Thailand dedicated to the well-being and happiness of children. It is the most popular festival in Thailand.
The holiday is celebrated on the second Saturday of January each year and is marked by various activities and events organised by government agencies, schools, and community groups.
History and Origin
The origins of Children’s Day in Thailand can be traced back to King Rama VI, the sixth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty.
In 1913, King Rama VI declared April 1st as Children’s Day, and it was celebrated as a national holiday until the end of his reign in 1925.
The Thai government reintroduced the holiday in the early 1980s, and it has been celebrated annually since then.
How Thailand Celebrates Children’s Day
National Children’s Day is a time for Thai children to enjoy special activities and events designed for their well-being, happiness, and overall development.
Children’s Day Parade
One of the most popular activities on Children’s Day is the “Children’s Day Parade” organised by the government.
The parade features colourful floats, traditional Thai dance performances, and various mascots designed to entertain and delight children.
It is usually held in major cities, and many children and their families participate enthusiastically.
Other Interesting Activities
In addition to the parade, there are also other activities that schools and community groups organise. These include:
Sports Competitions.
Art and Craft Contests.
Free Entry to the Amusement Parks.
Fun Fairs.
Health and Safety Awareness Campaigns.
The activities are designed to promote children’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being and encourage them to develop their talents and skills.
Government agencies, schools, and community groups work together to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, such as eating nutritious food, exercising regularly, and practising good hygiene.
They also provide information on preventing accidents and injuries and staying safe in different situations.
In recent years, Children’s Day in Thailand has also become an opportunity for organisations and individuals to give back to their communities.
Many organisations and individuals use this day to organise charity events and fundraisers to benefit children in need, such as those living in poverty or with disabilities.
Conclusion
The festival has gained immense popularity over the years, with the entire Thai population coming together to celebrate it. Everyone participates in the festival in some way or the other. For instance, during this year’s celebration, the Thai police in Narathiwat demonstrated a crowd control routine to children.
The entire nation joining in facilitating a day of fun and learning for children adds to the charm of National Children’s Day, or Wan Dek in Thailand.

The education system in Thailand is divided into three levels: primary, secondary, and higher education. Primary education is compulsory and lasts for six years, while secondary education lasts for three years. Higher education in Thailand includes both vocational and academic programs.
The government of Thailand places a strong emphasis on education and has implemented a number of policies and initiatives aimed at improving the quality of education and increasing access to education, particularly for disadvantaged groups such as students from rural areas and low-income families.
One of the main challenges facing the education system in Thailand is the high dropout rate, particularly among students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The government has implemented various programs to address this issue, including scholarships and financial assistance for low-income families.
Another major challenge for the Thai education system is the need to improve the quality of education and to better prepare students for the workforce. The government has implemented a number of initiatives to improve the quality of education, including the introduction of new curriculum and teacher training programs.
Overall, the Thai government is committed to improving the education system and increasing access to education for all. However, more work needs to be done to address the challenges facing the education system, including the high dropout rate and the need to improve the quality of education.

However, to make a successful innovation, they need to create a roadmap, work hard on the roadmap, learn to sail against the tide and have the courage to take risks. Then only an innovative idea can be converted into a successful venture.
Guest of Honour, Australian Member of Parliament, Ms Zaneta Mascarenhas stressed on the importance of innovation and explained the concept of duality.
She referred to the idea of duality in the realm of ancient wisdom that coexists with modern life, which Ms Zaneta believes to be a unique attribute of the Indian people.
The acceptance of this concept of duality amidst the Indian diaspora has allowed them to mix the features of Indian custom with the best aspects of their adopted country and form a distinctive third culture.
Ms Zaneta Mascarenhas Following Ms Mascarenhas’ address, Dr S. Jaishankar, one of the most eloquent Indian diplomats and politicians serving as Minister of External Affairs, Government of India, took to the podium.
He guided us with his enlightened thoughts which focused on the importance of PBD in maintaining a special connection between the Indian diaspora and their motherland.
Dr Jaishankar spoke about how the bond between India and its diaspora grew more robust during the turbulent time of Covid-19. He highlighted the Vande Bharat and Maitri vaccine initiatives of the Indian government, which were aimed towards helping the Indian diaspora amidst the pandemic.
Dr S. Jaishankar A cheerful thank you note from Ms Meeta R Lochan, Secretary, Department of Youth Affairs, marked the end of the first session.
The 17th PBD offered a flavourful food platter of Indore’s delicious cuisine for attendees to savour. From spicy chaats and piquant bhutte ka kees to succulent kebabs, there was something for everyone.
The flavours of Indore’s famous poha, jalebi, and kachoris will tantalize your taste buds and leave you wanting more.
The Indo Thai News team took the opportunity to indulge in Indore’s culinary delights at PBD 2023.

Indore — Dressed Up for 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas
The 17th PBD is taking place in Indore from 8-10 January 2023, and we at Indo Thai News are here at ground zero to cover this event in all its glory.
We decided to catch an early morning flight and pierced through the cold weather to make our way to Indore.
Well, what an incredible journey it has been so far. We are overwhelmed by the welcoming weather and hospitality of Indore. Everyone from the airport to the hotel extended help with a warm smile.
Indore, a bustling city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, is a place of diversity and culture. Located on the banks of the Saraswati and Khan rivers, Indore is known for its rich history, delicious food, and warm hospitality. It is one of the most populous cities in Madhya Pradesh.
One thing that makes Indore special is its unique blend of traditional and modern culture. The city is home to several ancient temples, palaces, and monuments, including the admirable Rajwada Palace and the pious Khajrana Temple.
Indore is also home to many modern shopping malls, restaurants, and entertainment venues, making it an excellent place for tourists and locals to experience the best of both worlds.
The Indo Thai News team took a stroll down the famous streets of Indore to get a taste of its delicious street food. With Chaat, Pav Bhaji, Pani Puri and more, Indore has a lot to offer to the hard-core foodies.
Indore is also home to fine restaurants serving various cuisines, from Indian to Chinese to Italian. And what’s more, Indore serves delicious cuisine with an emotional touch.
One thing that has been of great awe to us is Indore’s warm and welcoming people. The locals are amiable and always ready to help. They go the extra mile to reach out and help tourists, making it an excellent place for travellers.
On our way from the airport to the hotel, we interacted with Manoj Sharma, a friendly and experienced driver. The second person who impressed us was our assistant hotel manager Amit Chouri.
From Sharma to Chouri, everyone is happy that such a big event is happening in their city. They are proud citizens of this beautiful city, a city that has won the award of the cleanest city in India – six times in a row! They have worked hard to keep their city clean and have made a conscious effort to, in their way, spread awareness about the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Amit Chouri feels that these events allow tier 2 cities like Indore to showcase their culture, beauty and, most of all, their potential to the world. He also added that such events are usually held in big cities and make little difference to the lives of those in these cities.
But when such significant events are held in smaller cities, they positively impact the lives of ordinary people in these cities. Such events should be held more often in the smaller cities as they provide an excellent opportunity for growth and development for the common person.
Indore is ready for PBD and many more events and tourists to come. Add Indore to your itinerary and enjoy the aesthetic beauty of this bustling city where history mingles with modern times.
