I’m imagining Jake tweeting this about his and Bradley’s kid after the toddler overheard Jake ranting about Cyclone

Listening to different versions of Elvis’s “I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You” on Spotify because it makes me cry (a good cry), and the start of the song:

“Wise men say only fools rush in, but I can’t help falling in love with you”

This song is so Bradley Bradshaw coded. Like. You KNOW he’s softly crooned this song into Jake’s ear as they slow danced in the living room.

Because maybe he was a fool, but he fell first AND fell hardest. And maybe that’s what scared him so bad that he broke up with Jake in the first place. Because it CAN’T be love, because people can’t just fall in love THAT FAST. Right?

thinking about my beloved Bradley and… guys, GUYS

this man grew up drenched in legacy. from day one it was Goose’s son, not Bradley. his world was flight suits and aviators and sunday barbecues with Ice and Mav and the ‘86 legends like it was completely normal. of course flying was the only path. what else was there?

he grew the mustache when carole got sick not because he liked it, but because she’d smile and say “you look just like your dad”

and then suddenly everyone was saying it. you really are Goose’s boy

so he stared in the mirror and tried to see himself, but all he saw was what he was supposed to be

that’s why when maverick pulled his papers, it HURT

because without the navy, without flying, without that version of himself… who even was he?

so yeah, he makes it to Top Gun. he survives. he says “yeah okay, I did it” like it means something and it SHOULD

until one day Jake—stupid perfect Jake with his dumb green eyes—asks him what his favorite color is

or maybe it’s his favorite movie. or sport. something ridiculous.

and Bradley just blanks full 404 error

because is his favorite sport really golf, or was that just what Ice would drag him to?

is his favorite beer actually that brand, or was it just the one Maverick handed him at fifteen with a wink?

and Jake sees it

he sees him

and from that moment on, he makes it his personal mission to take Bradley to every weird restaurant, every random hobby class, every indie concert and baseball game and cooking course just to show him there’s more

more than legacy. more than ghosts.

and one day Bradley tries a raspberry sour beer and lights up

and Jake’s like “that’s it. that’s your beer. we found it”

and for the first time, he’s not being Goose’s son

Jake grew up in Texas on a farm, has been a cowboy all his life. He has taken on more of running the farm recently as his dad‘s starting to age. He heads into town maybe once a month to run some errands but that‘s it.

Bradley is a hairdresser from California, openly gay but still kind of a stud. He‘s feminine, he‘s masculine, he‘s an enigma.

He’s gorgeous.

He moved to town because Nat, his college bestie, needed support after her husband left her with the kids.

Bradley opens his own hair salon in town and one time Jake is there to pick something up from the post office across the street. He feels drawn to the shop for some reason and curiosity wins out. He walks over there to check it out. Maybe he can tell his Ma about this new salon, she‘s always complaining about her hairdresser.

The minute he lays eyes on Bradley, charming an elderly lady through the mirror as he is cutting her hair, he knows he‘s done for.

This is the most beautiful man Jake has ever seen.

Too bad Jake keeps his sexuality locked away in a box somewhere deep down.

His mom knows, and oh she’s always looking for nice young men around town who will make her baby happy, but his dad is kind of old school and Jake doesn‘t think it‘s worth making it known to him that he plays for the other team. Chances he would meet someone to make it worthwhile are lower than zero out here.

Well, here Bradley is.

Flicking his eyes over to meet Jake‘s through the window. He frowns a little, and Jake can’t look away even though he‘s being rude, just staring like that. His Ma raised him better.

Then, a slow smile rises on Bradley‘s face and Jake finally ducks his head, feeling an embarrassed heat run up his neck. He hides under the rim of his Stetson, turning on his heel and walks back across the street to his pick-up truck.

He gets in and can‘t help but check through the rear view mirror once more, but Bradley is back to serving his customer, not a care in the world.

Jake‘s heart is beating wildly in his chest and he takes a deep breath before starting the car.

This is not good. This is not good at all.
