Self Care Seminar: Stephanie’s Reflection
Hello everyone,
As stated earlier this week we discussed a self-care workshop which we were involved in. We were then given the task of writing a small reflection on the seminar. Here is mine and what I have learned about self-care through this workshop.
Self-care looks different for everybody! How do you currently practice self-care in your daily life?
Personally, I practice self-care by spending time with friends at my local games store. Twice a week we will play Dungeons and Dragons, and we have a blast playing. By playing Dungeons and Dragons, I can step away from my issues for a while and focus on my own self-care. However, when things get busy, and I can’t play Dungeons and Dragons, I will listen to my favourite music or take a relaxing bath. Both give me time to focus on myself and provide some much-needed self-care. What are some new tips you learned during today's session? Do you plan on adopting any of these into your current self-care routine?
During the workshop, I learned about the issue with multitasking and how it can cause excess stress in an individuals life. As a student, I am a person who is continually working on either building my resume, making notes for class, or trying to maintain a social life. Therefore, to get the most out of my day, I multitask to accomplish as most as possible. During the workshop, we learned that the best way to achieve our goals is to take on one task at a time. This way, we reduce stress and do not burn out. As someone who is exceptionally work-oriented, I plan to work this into my self-care routine that way, I can do the most work possible without burning myself out.
Opinion: how seriously should self-care be taken in school and work-life? Are there stressors unique to postsecondary students? Do you believe there is adequate support available to youth at Lakehead?
Self-care is something that would be taken extremely seriously in both a school and workplace. Unfortunately, it is something that is frequently sacrificed in the name of productivity, thus leading to burn out. When it comes to post-secondary students, the lack of self-care is especially prevalent as students are continually working towards due dates or making sure to work enough hours to pay for tuition. Because of this, students are frequently on the verge of burn out. At Lakehead, I believe that organizations like LUSU or Student Success work hard to provide self-care options for students; however, due to the nature of a post-secondary environment, there is only so much a school can do. I believe that Lakehead and the many organizations which work within Lakehead are doing well to provide for their students and will continue to find better ways to provide students with options for self-care.

Celebrating Pride and how volunteers made a difference.
Tumblr media
This weekend I was able to attend Toronto Pride, an event full of fun events, friendly people, and contagious energy. This was my first year at pride, and although I tried my best to be prepared for everything, there were many things which I didn’t prepare for such as the heat, crowds, etc. Luckily for me and the countless newcomers who were at pride, there was a group of people who were there to help. These were the volunteers.
When going to Pride, my friends and I ended up getting lost when trying to get to the drag performances going on at the main stage. After wandering around for a while, we were able to come across an information stand, which gave us directions to where we were supposed to go. This information stand was run by volunteers who were happy to help anyone who came by and wish everyone a happy pride. Without them, my friends and I would have ended up missing the show or even lost in the crowds.
During the day there was a large fair which had several vendors and stands. One stand which stood out was a stand for “Free Parent Hugs.” This stand was run by a large group of moms and dads who volunteered their time by providing hugs to people who wanted them and handing out cards with words of encouragement to the festival goers. I spoke with one of the volunteers named Doug and asked him what made him want to volunteer for this table he said:
“I know how hard it can be to come out to family, it is even harder when you don’t have the support of your parents. I volunteered so I could provide some love and support for people who need it, and who doesn’t love hugs?”
After wishing Doug a happy Pride I went on my way and saw several volunteers ranging from paramedics, security, and people running cool of stations to prevent individuals from getting heat stroke during the hot day,
On the final day of Pride, I went to the parade. Amongst the multitude of excellent performances, there were also volunteers who marched in the parade carrying banners, dancing on floats, and spreading cheer. They brought so much enthusiasm to the show and helped to make it what it was.
Overall, I am happy that I was able to attend pride, but I am also delighted that the volunteers who came out were there. Volunteers were the backbone of pride. They helped to run events, keep people safe, and provide support for those who needed it. Because of them, I and many others were able to have a safe and happy pride, something that I look forward to doing for many years to come.

Supporting the LGBTQ+ community during pride.
During pride, many LGBTQ+ allies wonder how they can better support their friends and families within the community. Because of this, we have compiled 5 things which you can do during pride to support the LGBTQ+ community!
1. Educate yourself
As culture evolves, it is important to understand that the LGBTQ+ community is extremely diverse and has a variety of sexual identities, gender expressions, pronouns, etc. Therefore, it is essential that you seek out information and opportunities which will help you learn more about the community. By doing so you will expand your mind and find ways to be a better ally.
2. Donate to local organizations
Most organizations which provide services to the LGBTQ+ community are non-profit, this means that their funding comes from grants and donations from generous donors. Even if you cannot donate money to these organizations, a donation of your time is always great.
3. Volunteer
As stated above, volunteering your time with an organization can help not only with staffing for these organizations, but it can also help you learn more about LGBTQ+ organizations within your community. Pride is an extremely busy month for most organizations and they could always use a helping hand,
4. Advocate for your family and friends
Pride is not only a time for celebration but it is also a time for advocacy. This could be something as simple as intervening when you witness unethical language or behaviour or even challenging policies and procedures which are harmful towards the LGBTQ+ community.
5. Research and spreading awareness
Knowing more about the issues which impact the LGBTQ+ community can assist you to find things to get involved with. Although we have come a long way, there are still issues which impact the community such as youth homelessness, hate crimes, and conversion therapy. Knowing about these problems and spreading awareness can help to educate the masses and spark the flame of change within your community.
Regardless of what you plan on doing during pride make sure to have a good time celebrating and spending time with your LGBTQ+ friends and family members,

Self-Care Techniques
Hi LU! This week I’m taking a bit of a different topic approach to our blog posts. Trying to balance school, family, friends, and work alongside volunteering can be difficult, and at times stressful. This is why it’s important to ensure that you’re taking care of yourself! So, this week we’ll be discussing self-care techniques. These are some small, simple techniques that you can incorporate into your daily routine. Check out our list of 25 below!
Have a ‘self-date:’ Take yourself out for coffee or to a new restaurant.
Check in with your emotions. Sit quietly and try to name how you’re feeling.
Turn off your cell phone and/or computer for an hour and step away from the constant notifications. Give yourself a chance to refocus!
Take your camera outside and snap some photos of anything that captures your eye.
Plant something! Many libraries (including the Orillia Public Library) have free seeds available at their Seed Libraries.
Go for a walk, bike ride, or drive without a particular destination. Explore your city!
Write out your thoughts/feelings.
Unfollow negative people or accounts on social media.
Complete a mini wardrobe-declutter: Recycle or donate 3 articles of clothing from your closet that you rarely wear.
Try out a new recipe. Cook yourself a nice dinner, or bake something and enjoy the finished product with a hot cup of tea/coffee.
Start a compliments journal: Keep track of the various compliments you receive and read-over them from time-to-time.
Make a playlist (or CD) of your favourite songs.
Re-visit a hobby you loved as a kid.
Write a ‘Done’ list of everything you’ve accomplished that day (no matter how insignificant each task may seem)!
Change the sheets on your bed. Sleeping in a clean bed is such a nice feeling!
Listen to an inspiring podcast or audiobook.
Do something kind for someone else. This could include volunteering!
Take a nap.
Do something artistic - doodle, sketch your surroundings, or paint something!
Write a positive review for your favourite local business. Spreading some kind words!
Re-read your favourite childhood book.
Hand-write and send a letter to a friend or a relative. Or, send a hand-made holiday/special occasion card!
Attend a local music performance. Many local events have free admission. If you’re in Orillia, try checking out the live music at the Orillia Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings!
Make a list of things you’re thankful for, or things that bring you joy, and hang it up in your room or office space. This is one technique that I use myself!
Take a long shower and dress yourself in an outfit that makes you feel good - even if you have nowhere to be.
Did you use one of these techniques for self-care? Let us know in the comments below!

The Importance of Volunteering During Pride Month
Pride month is a time for celebration for members of the LGBTQ+ community as well as their allies; however, during this time of celebration, we often forget the importance of volunteering with LGBTQ+ communities and events. It wasn’t until I came across some of the local organizations such as Simcoe Pride and the Gilbert Center that I realized how important volunteering can be. These organizations during the month of June are working their hardest to create impactful events such as the Pride Prom and Trans Pride March. Events such as this need many people to help organize as well as run said events, this is where volunteers can make a difference. By volunteering for these organizations you are not only connecting to the LGBTQ+ community in Orillia, but you are also ensuring that these events are able to take place. If you or any of your friends are interested in volunteering for events during pride make sure to contact us at [email protected] or follow the link below.

Volunteerism in Canada
Hi LU! The Youth Engagement Team has been working hard these past few weeks to match a group of international students with some great volunteer opportunities in Orillia. They’ll be arriving at Lakehead at the end of June, so you’ll most likely be seeing some new faces around campus at that point. Spending so much time thinking about volunteering in an international context has caused for me to reflect on the state of volunteering in Canada. This blog post explores some statistics and figures on Canadian volunteerism. It’s obvious that volunteering is a valuable part of Canadian society! Read on for more information.
Please note that the information for this blog post was adapted from the “Volunteering and charitable giving in Canada” report, using data from 2013, available here.
The Prevalence of Volunteering in Canada
→ In 2013, more than 4 in 10 Canadians volunteered. This accounts to 12.7 million people, or 44% of Canadians. Unfortunately, this is a slight decrease from 2010, in which 47% of Canadians volunteered. Let’s get those numbers back up, LU!
Tumblr media
Volunteer Hours
→ The total annual volunteer hours for 2013 added up to 1,957 million. This breaks down to 154 average annual volunteer hours. Again, this is a decrease from 2010, in which the total annual volunteer hours were 2,063 million, and the average annual 156.
Who is Most Likely to Volunteer?
→ There are many factors associated with who is most likely to volunteer. These include the size of a person’s social network, personality type, and marital status.
→ In 2013, women were slightly more likely to volunteer than men. 45% of women volunteered, in comparison to 42% of men.
→ In regards to age, volunteering was the most prevalent among young people. Indeed, youth aged 15-19 were the most likely to volunteer, as 66% of them did. However, this may be due to the mandatory volunteering requirement for graduation from secondary school. The next age at which volunteering was most prevalent was middle-aged adults who often have school-aged children. Forty-eight percent (48%) of adults aged 35-44 volunteered in 2013.
→ Older adults aged 75 and over were the least likely to volunteer, with 27% of them doing so. The next lowest was adults aged 65-74, at 38%.
→ However, although volunteering was less prevalent among older populations, those who did volunteer contributed the most hours. In other words, the older adults who do volunteer, volunteer a lot!
Tumblr media
How Does Volunteering Vary across Canada?
→ Saskatchewan had the highest rate of volunteering across Canada, at 56%. Manitoba had the second-highest rate, at 52%.
→  Quebec had the lowest rate of volunteering, at 32%. Quebec was also the only province with the average number of volunteer hours below the national average, at 123.
Education and Volunteering
→ Volunteers are increasingly more educated. Over ten years, the proportion of volunteers aged 25-64 with university degrees rose from 35-39%.
→ In 2013, 4% of volunteers had less than a high school diploma, 21% had graduated from high school, 36% had a post-secondary diploma or certificate, and 39% had a university degree.
Are you more of a visual person? Check out all of this information displayed in an infographic below!
Tumblr media
We hope that reading through these figures inspired you to volunteer yourself! Email us at [email protected] and we’ll match you with an awesome opportunity that is handpicked to match your needs and/or interests.
Until next time, LU!

Volunteering in Orillia: Part Seven, Elizabeth Fry Society.
First and foremost, tell me a little bit about your organization.
Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe County is a non-profit organization that envisions healthy, hopeful, and empowered individuals, supported by a community that understands the challenges, stigmas, and systemic issues faced by those at risk.  Our vision is to support, advocate for, and empower individuals at risk to enrich their lives and to inspire positive change in our community.
How does your organization help the community?
Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe County helps the community in a variety of different ways.  Firstly, we provide alternatives to the formal court process to both youth, and adults.  This includes the Youth Justice Program and the Adult Direct Accountability Program.  Secondly, our organization manages Joyce Kope House.  Joyce Kope House is the agency’s 27-bed safe residence for women and is the only Community Residential Facility (halfway house) north of Toronto for federally and provincially sentenced women.  Joyce Kope House provides women under parole supervision to Correctional Services Canada and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services the opportunity to live and work in the community during a period of reintegration.  We also have four Bail Beds that are designated to women who are released from custody while awaiting trial.  Joyce Kope House is the only transitional shelter in the City of Barrie for women experiencing homelessness.  Our organization also facilitates a variety of correctional programs which include jail visitation and advocacy, women’s programs, and a community maintenance program for men.  Outside of the office, we facilitate programs in rural and remote areas in the areas of Emotions Management, Grief and Loss, Healthy Relationships, Substance Use and Harm Reduction, and Anti-Theft.  Lastly, we offer a Youth Trustee Program for youth who can no longer reside with a parent or guardian, and who need to apply to receive Ontario Works benefits.
When it comes to university students in Orillia, what volunteer opportunities do you have for busy students?
Our primary volunteer opportunity is with our Youth Justice Committee.  As Youth Justice Committee Member, volunteers will sit on a panel with two or three other volunteers, to meet with youth involved in diversion through the Youth Justice Program.  During the meeting, volunteers will understand all aspects of the incident that brought the youth to the program, and help to assign appropriate and meaningful sanctions for the youth to complete in order to complete the program successfully.
Besides volunteer hours, what are the benefits of students volunteering?
Volunteering is a great way to build your resume, explore your interests, and network within your community.  Not to mention, volunteering enables you to actively contribute to helping others and to promote social change.  By volunteering with Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe County, you will undergo training, and receive a certificate upon completion.  You will also have various opportunities to attend volunteer meetings that showcase different agencies and programs within your community.  Furthermore, you will be assisting in providing an alternative to the formal court process.
What are some of the obstacles which students may have which prevent them from volunteering?
Our Youth Justice Committee meetings only run on weeknights.  This may come into conflict with students’ class schedules.  We do not offer volunteering on the weekends.
Are there any specifications as to who can volunteer at your organization?
All people wishing to volunteer at Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe County must be 18 years of age, or older, currently reside or work within Simcoe County, and be able to obtain a Vulnerable Sectors Screen upon request.  We ask each volunteer to commit to volunteering at least once a month, for a year.
If you could say one thing to students about volunteering, what would it be?
Giving back to your community through volunteering, not only benefits those in need, but it also benefits you by making your community a better, more inclusive space.
What is the best way for students to contact you?
Students can contact me by email at [email protected] or by phone at 705-725-0612 ext. 221.
What is the best way for students to get involved at your organization?
The best way for students to get involved at Elizabeth Fry Society of Simcoe County is to complete the volunteer application found on our website and to send it along with their resume, to [email protected].
Why would students want to get involved with your organization?
Students studying in the areas of Criminology, Political Science, Law, or Social Work can gain valuable experience in the field by volunteering with our Youth Justice Committee.  This volunteer opportunity gives volunteers the opportunity to practice facilitation skills while using the principles of Restorative Justice, and interact with youth and families.

Creating a Volunteer Profile
Hi LU!
Did you know that Information Orillia has a database of countless volunteer opportunities available in Simcoe County? This allows you to specify your age, the geographic locations you’re interested in volunteering in,  the times that you’re available, and your volunteer interests. Click “submit form” once you’ve filled in each field.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Step 4: Now it’s time to search! Scroll to the top of the page and click “search now.”
Tumblr media
Step 5: This will return a list of volunteer opportunities that match your age criteria, the communities you’re able to volunteer in, and your areas of interest.
Tumblr media
Step 6: Scroll through the volunteer opportunities and find one that interests you. Click on an opportunity and then select the “Yes, I’d like to volunteer!” button. This allows you to send a message to the organization’s volunteer coordinator, indicating that you’re available to volunteer. Fill in the form and click “submit” to send a message to the coordinator.
Tumblr media
And that’s it! Now it’s even easier for you to find volunteer opportunities that match your location and interests.

Volunteering in Orillia: Part six, Helping Hands.
First and foremost, tell me a little bit about your organization. Helping Hands was founded in 1972 right here in Orillia. A need was identified to help seniors in the Orillia area maintain their independence and remain safe at home as long as possible. They were supported through transportation, personal support and housekeeping services by a group of dedicated volunteers and a small number of paid staff. The organization has now grown to more than 120 employees and over 100 volunteers; offering similar services at a subsidized rate with funding through the Local Health Integration Network. We are proud to provide various support programs to more than 2500 clients annually in Orillia, Barrie and Muskoka.
When it comes to university students in Orillia, what volunteer opportunities do you have for busy students?
Helping Hands has a number of volunteer opportunities, each with varying commitment levels and required skills; Meals on Wheels-Volunteers pick up and deliver hot meals to clients who might otherwise not have access to nutritionally balanced hot meals. Meals are delivered Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons in the Orillia area-Opportunities are available for one or all three days per week.
Transportation-Volunteers provide transportation in their own vehicle (mileage reimbursement available) or in a Helping Hands accessible van to clients requiring a safe and affordable option to run errands, attend medical appointments or social events. Transportation services are offered in Orillia, as well as long distance. Volunteers provide their preferred availability and Helping Hands will provide a schedule of rides within the time offered.
Office Support-Volunteers support the administrative functions within the Helping Hands main office. Volunteers typically commit to one day per week or biweekly to help out with daily reminder calls to clients or perform basic administrative functions.
Social Programming-Volunteers assist with coordination and facilitation of community social programs including scheduled social events, holiday parties, friendly Visiting and Telephone Reassurance. Volunteers in these programs provide their preferred availability and Helping Hands will work within the times offered.
Besides volunteer hours, what are the benefits of students volunteering?
Our volunteers often report feeling proud of the work our organization does in the community. Supporting a vulnerable population who is often isolated due to ageing conditions is different than many other volunteer opportunities. Our clients often don’t have family or friends to connect and rely on and our services provide the sense of security needed to help them remain independent and supported.
What are some of the obstacles which students may have which prevent them from volunteering? There are very few limitations to volunteering at Helping Hands. Many of our opportunities are offered 7 days per week and can accommodate school and personal schedules. Our transportation service volunteers must be at least 21 years of age and are required to provide proof of valid drivers’ license and insurance. All volunteers must provide a clean criminal record check.
How does your organization help the community?
Helping Hands assists the community through our seniors programming, but on a broader scale, we participate in many regional planning initiatives to address concerns in the community health care sector. We have worked with local police and hospitals to help place and support vulnerable seniors and collaborate with other community health care providers to support this population.
What is the best way to get involved at your organization?
The best way to get involved at Helping Hands is to simply participate in our culture. There are always new initiatives brought forward and our teams come together and work towards improving services in the community.
Are there any specifications as to who can volunteer at your organization?
All volunteers at Helping Hands must provide an up to date criminal record check.
If you could say one thing to students about volunteering, what would it be?
We have many volunteers at Helping Hands who have made volunteer roles a part of their life. They began volunteering early in life and many have continued to do so into their own retirement years. Non-profit organizations like Helping Hands are dependant upon the service of volunteers to keep services available to the clients we serve.
What is the best way for students to contact you?
Students are best to contact our main office at 705-325-7861 and ask to speak to our Human Resources Department. They can also visit our website at www.helpinghandsorillia.ca and submit any questions online or find out for more information about our organization.
What is the best way for students to get involved at your organization?
The best way for a student to get involved at Helping Hands would be to begin the volunteer process with Human Resources. We can arrange for potential volunteers to shadow in each department until they find a program that speaks to their values and needs as a community member. We also welcome students to come forward with ideas and initiatives they may be looking to partner on that would support our clients in the community.
Why would students want to get involved with your organization?
Students are not only providing support to those in need in our communities, but they are gaining valuable life skills and knowledge that can help advance their future careers and enhance their current educational endeavours. Anyone interested in entering social service, health care, political or human service fields will benefit from the experience of volunteering with our client population.

Volunteer Theme of the Week: Working with Seniors
Hi LU! This week we’re discussing volunteer opportunities that involve working with senior citizens and the elderly. Volunteering in Orillia: Part Five, Birchmere Retirement Residence.
First and foremost, tell me a little bit about your organization.
Birchmere Retirement Residence has a long history, that started many years before it became a retirement home in 1981. We are located in the “Sunshine City” of Orillia on the west shore of Lake Couchiching – just minutes away from the downtown core, and next to Couchiching Beach Park. As a retirement home, we take pride in offering seniors a warm and homelike atmosphere in a scenic lakeside setting. Our staff are dedicated to caring for our residents with both compassion and respect. Our volunteers are the foundation of our activity department, whether it be for entertainment, church services, pet therapy, or friendly visits; you can count on our volunteers to make a difference in the lives of our residents
When it comes to university students in Orillia, what volunteer opportunities do you have for busy students?
We always have a variety of volunteer opportunities for people, especially students. Opportunities are available any day of the week; morning, afternoon, or evening. They range from volunteering for activities/programs, events/entertainment, trips/outings, and one-to-one visits. Tasks could involve assisting with portering residents to and from activities/programs or events/entertainment, joining us on trips/outings, and chatting, reading, walking, playing cards, or helping write letters, etc. We are very flexible and can work around their schedules. It doesn't take much time to be a volunteer, even 1 hour a week can make a huge difference.
Besides volunteer hours, what are the benefits of students volunteering?
There are countless benefits to volunteering, especially for students in school. Many of our volunteers don't always see or hear the effect they have on our residents, but as a staff member, I witness it firsthand. Not only do I hear the constant praise and appreciation for everything that the volunteers do, but I hear how happy and excited they were to have people come in to visit them at Birchmere. Some of our residents don't often leave the comfort of home, so it's nice to have guests, especially new ones to come to brighten their days. I also think that with the number of older volunteers retiring or becoming too sick to continue volunteering, it's up to our younger generations to fill the volunteer gap. Volunteering not only looks good on the students' resumes and job applications, but it enables them to build relationships within the community and make connections which can help them network down the road once they've graduated.
What are some of the obstacles which students may have which prevent them from volunteering?
The obstacles I can think of are: transportation (Birchmere has a bus stop right outside the front door), filling out Birchmere's Volunteer Application Form (not available online, they would need to come to pick one up in-person), obtaining a Vulnerable Sector Police Check (volunteers can obtain this free of charge, they would just need to come to get a letter from Birchmere), and volunteering within the confines of their already busy schedules (I was a student not too long ago, so I understand how busy things can get).
·How does your organization help the community?
Birchmere supports the community in various different ways, with countless community partnerships, and as a community event sponsor. It is a retirement home that meets the varying needs of its past, present, and future residents, with multi-level care and assisted living options. Our Assisted Care program is has expanded dramatically since it was implemented due to its popularity and need in the community. Based on this need, we constantly review the services offered, adding or altering services based on resident, family and partnership feedback. As an organization, we also strive to support and shop local. Many of our residents frequent Orillia's downtown and shop at the businesses along Mississauga Street.
What is the best way to get involved at your organization?
The best way to get involved at Birchmere is to simply reach out to Activity or Reception staff whether over the phone or come for a visit in-person. You can check out our website for more information:

and click on Birchmere, or click on our 'sister' retirement homes in Orillia (Champlain Manor Retirement Residence) and Gravenhurst (Granite Ridge Retirement Residence).
Are there any specifications as to who can volunteer at your organization?
There are no specifications as to who can volunteer with us. Volunteering is open to people of all ages at Birchmere. As long as they can complete a volunteer application, obtain a Vulnerable Sector Police Check, and do the ORCA training modules prior to beginning their volunteering, they're good to go.
If you could say one thing to students about volunteering, what would it be?
I'd share an inspirational quote with them. This one really resonates with many of our current volunteers: “You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give.” ~Winston Churchill
What is the best way for students to contact you?
The best way for students to contact me is either through email:

What is the best way for students to get involved at your organization?
The best way for students to get involved at Birchmere is to drop by and fill out a volunteer application form, and we can go from there. We have all sorts of activities and events that will appeal to a variety of individuals and interests. Reception staff are at the front desk from 7:30AM until 9PM every day of the week.
Why would students want to get involved with your organization?
I think any students considering a career that involves working with people in any form, or especially working with seniors, would really benefit from getting involved by volunteering with Birchmere. I can guarantee it's going to be one of the most rewarding experiences, and you'll remember the residents, their stories, and your experiences with them for a lifetime.

Volunteering in Orillia: Part Four, Comfie Cat Shelter.
First and foremost, tell me a little bit about your organization.
The Comfie Cat Shelter is a no-kill shelter founded in 2005 to address the issue of the overpopulation of abandoned cats. We are 100% volunteer-run and not-for-profit. The volunteers of The Comfie Cat Shelter believe in helping cats in need. We rescue abandoned cats and accept cats from people who are no longer able to care for them. We provide necessary veterinary care to all the cats in our care and in order to reduce overpopulation, our cats are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. Our goal is to find these friendly felines their forever homes!
When it comes to university students in Orillia, what volunteer opportunities do you have for busy students?
We have volunteers who provide assistance on a regular basis, as our shelter is reliant on daily volunteers. Many of these volunteers come in during the morning and early afternoon. We have a lot of students who donate their time on the weekend when able. We also have volunteers that help with specific events such as fundraising, garage sales, parades, dinners and silent auctions. A volunteer has the opportunity to work around their schedule and give as much time as they are able.
Besides volunteer hours, what are the benefits of students volunteering? Volunteering provides students with the opportunity to get involved in the community, help some of its most vulnerable members and be a part of something bigger than themselves. Volunteering also allows them to meet new people, gain new skills and feel a sense of accomplishment. Volunteering has even been shown to positively impact mental and physical health.
What are some of the obstacles which students may have which prevent them from volunteering?
We know that students are very busy with school, work and other commitments. Oftentimes, volunteering gets overlooked until it is a necessary requirement for education. As students have demanding schedules, the motivation to find time to volunteer can be difficult. Many students can become overwhelmed and feel that they need to give all of their free time, but in reality, an hour here or there really makes a difference to an organization!
How does your organization help the community?
The Comfie Cat Shelter provides homes for unwanted cats, controls the pet population, provides people with new members to their family, and improves animal health. We accept abandoned and often, sick animals, and give them another chance at life. We help to bring the community together by uniting people for a common goal and belief in our cause.
What is the best way to get involved in your organization?
Fill out a volunteer form on our website or just contact us! We will gladly assist anyone looking to volunteer with us by determining the best fit depending on schedule, skills and abilities.
Are there any specifications as to who can volunteer at your organization?
No, we have volunteers of all ages, abilities and life experiences! We even have many seniors and children who volunteer at the shelter, helping with responsibilities such as grooming and socialization. There are many tasks at the shelter for anyone who is willing and able to help.
If you could say one thing to students about volunteering, what would it be? Volunteering might feel like a chore if you do it because you have to get volunteer hours for school, but if you find an organization that you love or a cause that you are passionate about, you will soon find that you enjoy giving back to the community!
What is the best way for students to contact you?
Our email is [email protected], our phone number is 705-326-1545, or we accept walk-ins during our business hours.
What is the best way for students to get involved in your organization?
Anyone can fill out a volunteer form on our website, which also allows them to check off any specific skills or interests (such as fundraising, clerical duties or committees) that they have. It also allows them to choose certain times they may be available. We understand that students have a busy schedule and are willing to accommodate for that
Why would students want to get involved with your organization?
We have flexible schedules for volunteers and we have many fundraising events throughout the year that we require volunteers for. We can work with specific strengths and skills of our volunteers to help place them in an area suited to them. Our volunteers become engaged with the community, have a positive impact on the lives of others and feel pride in doing a good deed. We can even help people gain skills and abilities that can forward their career path. Best of all, our volunteers get to spend a lot of time with adorable cats and kittens! What’s not to love?
