Jim Jones (Jonestown Massacre)

James Warren Jones (Jim Jones) was born May 13, 1931 and later died on November 18, 1978. He is known to be the leader of the Peoples Temple that was established in 1955 in San Francisco. 

The cult known as the Peoples temple would soon move to the Jonestown commune in Guyana. Following Jones would be his estimated 3,000+ followers, there at Jonestown the people practiced a communal life where much of their money and property went to Jones himself. 

By 1978 there were several investigations being performed on Jonestown and Jones was well aware that his time as leader was coming to an end, in retaliation he ordered a mass suicide that claimed the lives of 909 commune members, 304 of them being children ; almost all of the members died by drinking flavor aid laced with cyanide, the members who resisted were injected involuntarily via syringe. 

From a young age Jones was said to be obsessed with religion and death, often seen visiting a casket manufacturer, holding mock funerals for roadkill, and once even jumping off a building's rooftop to prove he could fly (he ended up breaking his arm but still insisted he had magical abilities). A little later in the year he would start to show an interest in different political leaders such as Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Karl Marx, Mao Zedong, and Mahatma Gandhi. Childhood friend of Jones states that on several accounts he remembers Jones saluting German prisoners being transported through their town and sometimes even yelling “Heil Hitler!”. 

James Warren Jones established himself as an outcast from a young age, but no one could imagine the events that would soon take place in the following years.
