Reg grins when B’Elanna walks over to him and gently shrugs at her thanks. “Don’t mention it. I’m just glad I could help.” She isn’t the first person to approach him like this, and Reg is beginning to feel certain she won’t be the last. Apparently his involvement in connecting the Voyager crew to the Alpha Quadrant is even more appreciated than he’d realized. In fact, quite a few crew members had practically tackle-hugged him on sight; that took some getting used to.

“It’s nice to actually meet everyone,” he remarks. “Some of you aren’t quite what I expected. In a good way, though! Good way.” Noticing that she seems a bit on edge despite her smile, Reg asks, “How are you settling in? How’s, um…” It takes a moment to remember her newborn daughter’s name. “…Miral?”

❛   WELL,  YOU SURE DID.  between you and the doctor,  well  ----  you two are the main reasons anyone knew to still LOOK for us,   ❜   though it’s not as if anyone could be BLAMED for giving up on them,  not with how long they’d been missing. 

❛   yeah,  i guess it’s pretty hard to really get to know people who are on the other side of the galaxy,   ❜   she can’t say he’s quite what she expected,  either,  but there’s something to be said for that.  basing your whole perspective of a person on personnel files and a few short conversations?  not ideal.  god,  she can’t imagine how the maquis crewmen must’ve been viewed by the outside world once knowledge had reached the alpha quadrant that voyager’s crew was ALIVE.  she’s just glad they’ve all been officially PARDONED.

the mention of miral brings a more GENUINE smile to her face,  and she replies with a light laugh,   ❛   she sleeps a lot,  luckily,   ❜   of course,  she neglects to mention that her daughter having three lungs makes for a whole lot of CRYING when she happens to be awake.   ❛   makes packing a lot easier,  that’s for sure.  but she’s healthy,  and she picked a pretty good time to make an entrance,  i might’ve lost my mind waiting even one more day,   ❜   absently she finds herself wondering who won that damn baby pool.

b’elanna’s real hatred for all things klingon started when she was six.  her father had been gone for several months,  her mother HATED the colony where they lived,  and elected to move back to the homeworld with her daughter in tow.  until that point,  b’elanna was mostly confused about why her father had gone   (   sure,  him and momma yelled A LOT,  but the bond he’d had with his daughter seemed unbreakable   ).   the camping trip with her cousins had given her some idea  —-  the only torres who seemed to really like klingons was her cousin elizabeth,  and even then,  it’d only been after dean had put a WORM in b’elanna’s sandwich.  humans were afraid of klingons,  that much she understood.  they were loud,  and violent,  and so DIFFERENT from most other species.  she didn’t blame them for that,  she couldn’t.  but when she arrived on q’onos,  to be greeted by her mother’s family and their open disdain for the half-human child   (   mongrel,  they called her   )  it became all too clear how DIFFERENT she was.  she wasn’t klingon enough.  she wasn’t human enough.  she’d never fit in anywhere  —-  no wonder her beloved father had left.  no wonder all she had left in the universe was her mother,  who she blamed so WHOLEHEARTEDLY for her father’s abandonment   (   she feels a burning RAGE whenever her mother talks badly about him,  though it doesn’t take long until the rage shifts to BOTH parents   ).   as far as she was concerned,  she had no one in the universe who cared  —-  and that’s why she started fixing things.  she’d tinker,  able to repair things that stumped even some adults.  if she couldn’t fix herself,  and she couldn’t fix her family,  she’d fix anything else that needed it.
