CHAPTER 4: THE BEGINNING - PART VII
Amara was once again surprised by the Mand'alor. He’d offered an apology in the most unexpectedly eloquent way—and now, he was offering calm reassurance to a woman who could’ve easily been responsible for real harm. It made Amara wonder: what kind of man was he really?
Boba and Fennec observed the whole exchange from a distance. Boba let out a low, contented grunt, the kind that said, See? You get it. Fennec seized the moment, now that the chaos had died down, to circle back to a question that had been pinging around her brain for days.
“Okay,” she started, folding her arms. “So I get Mando and Amara—but what about those three quarries?”
“What about them?” Boba gruffed.
“You know what,” she replied with a raised brow behind her visor. “The last one you picked for Mando is one of the most dangerous targets we’ve got. Are you sure you want Amara around him for that?”
“She can handle herself,” he snapped, a little sharper than necessary.
Fennec nodded slowly, unfazed. “I’m not questioning her skills. Everyone on Tatooine knows she can hold her own. I’m just saying... if one of them gets hurt—or worse, captured—the other one’s going to come running. You know that, right?”
“They’ll deal with it. Together.”
“You’re really not worried?” she asked, a trace of disbelief in her voice.
“If they’re going to build anything meaningful—friendship, trust, maybe something more—they need to be vulnerable with each other. Danger has a way of revealing a person’s true self. No masks. No armour. Just truth.”
Fennec cocked her head. “So this whole setup—this bonding mission of chaos—is your way of helping them fall in love?”
“I wouldn’t go that far,” he replied, though there was a smirk in his voice. “Maybe they learn they work well together. Maybe friendship turns into something more. Who says a plan can’t have two goals?”
—— *** ——
The last of the packing was finally done. Amara glanced around the ship, satisfied. She felt ready to head out with the Mandalorian. He had brought an impressive—okay, extreme—amount of weaponry. Even for bounty hunters, it was over the top. But she couldn’t exactly judge; her own cache probably looked just as bad. Maybe worse.
Din, too, felt more at ease now that everything was loaded. If the worst-case scenario came to pass, at least they were prepared. He scanned the garage one last time. Fennec had mentioned weapons caches scattered everywhere, but he didn’t spot a single one. Maybe she’d just said that to keep him sharp… but then again, Fennec wasn’t one to waste words.
He didn’t want to rush Amara, but time was ticking. He asked if she was ready, and she nodded. They began saying their goodbyes—Amara’s took longer, of course. Her farewells were warm, full of tight embraces and unshed tears, especially with Adi. She and Boba stepped away briefly for a private word, and Din felt a weird knot tighten in his stomach. He didn’t know why it bothered him. But it did.
While they were out of sight, Din took the chance to speak to Fennec and Adi. He assured them he’d look after Amara. Adi opened his mouth to speak, but before he could, his mom and Boba reappeared. Adi sighed. Another missed chance.
Din made sure to say a personal goodbye to Boba too. They reviewed the plan, went over contingencies. It was more than just a sendoff—it felt like a passing of the torch. Din didn’t have many people he considered family. Not outside of Grogu or the covert. Even then, he’d never really had a goodbye that felt like it meant something. Watching Amara surrounded by her found family left a quiet ache in his chest he couldn’t quite name.
“I’ll make sure she’s safe,” Din promised Boba one last time.
“You’d better,” the older Mandalorian replied flatly. “Though I’m not too worried. Amara could take out an entire army if she had to.”
Din chuckled. “What makes you say that?”
“You’ll see.”
—— *** ——
Thirty minutes and several heartfelt hugs later, the Sintas lifted off. Amara told Din he could pilot the ship on the way back—if he survived, and if she approved of how he handled himself. As the ship broke through the atmosphere, only two figures remained watching the skies: Adi and Gregor.
Adi was trying not to show it, but he was nervous. Sure, his mom had left before—many times, in fact—but this was the longest trip in almost two years. And this time, she wasn’t with someone she trusted completely. Not with Ca’tra. This time, it was with someone who, to Adi, was still a stranger.
Next to him, Gregor stood silently. Adi looked up at the man he trusted, the one who had always been there like a silent protector.
“Gregor, do you think they’ll be okay?”
“Mhmm,” the man grunted.
“I think so too. I just can’t shake this anxiety,” Adi muttered.
Gregor let out a low, inquisitive growl, but Adi just shrugged. “There’s no reason to be worried. I know she can handle herself. And he’s… well, he’s a Mandalorian.”
Adi sighed. “I’m worrying too much, aren’t I?”
“Hmm.”
Adi gave a small laugh. “Thanks, Gregor. You always know how to calm me down.”
He finally turned away from the sky and headed inside to tackle the long list of chores his mom had left him—plus the usual stream of customers, Peli’s demands, and his own endless to-do list. He knew standing around watching the sky wouldn’t bring her back any faster.
Still, he hoped they’d call soon. Maybe, maybe, he’d work up the courage to ask for a quick word with the Mandalorian. Not to be rude—just to let him know, ‘Adi style,’ that someone was watching. That he mattered.

CHAPTER 4: THE BEGINNING - PART VI
“I’m sorry, Boba. I know what it’s like to lose people you care about.”
“I hope we’re done losing people to violence,” he said quietly. “Death should be peaceful. Natural. Not stolen. I just hope none of us have to grieve again.”
Fennec nodded. She hoped that too. But one question still tugged at her.
“Do you think she’s ready to move on from Ca’tra?”
“I can’t answer that for her,” Boba replied. “But I want her to have the option—if she’s ready. And if she’s not, I want her to remember that the opportunity will always be there. With Mando... or someone else. When she’s ready.”
Fennec’s next question slipped out before she had time to think about it.
“Have you had that option?”
Boba turned to face her, his helmet still hiding his expression. But behind the visor, he was reeling. Maker, he wanted to rip his helmet off—take hers off too—and pull her close, press his lips to the ones he knew were hidden behind the black and orange plating. His chest ached with how badly he felt it. The silence dragged long enough for Fennec to glance sideways at him, wondering if she’d said too much.
—— *** ——
Amara stood on the ramp of the Sintas, pausing mid-step as she caught sight of her father and Fennec locked in wordless gaze. Their intense visor contact told the whole galaxy—including her—everything they were too afraid to say out loud.
She smiled softly. She hoped, more than anything, to one day see her father happy again. She still remembered the way his face used to light up when he looked at her mother. It had been decades since she’d seen that joy. But now? Fennec brought it back. And Babeh gave just as much joy in return—if only they’d find the courage to admit it.
They already had her blessing. She just hoped they realized it before Adi decided to get married and start a family of his own.
—— *** ——
Boba finally broke the silence. “You’re not going to drop it, are you?”
“Nope,” Fennec said, her grin audible even through her helmet.
Boba sighed—a rare sound of contentment. “I think... I might finally have an option.”
Fennec smirked, but didn’t let her heart run wild with it. Still, it stayed with her.
The moment passed, and they turned their attention back to the scene before them—each privately replaying the conversation they’d just had.
Suddenly, chaos erupted.
One of Peli’s droids, despite its typical nimble handling of tools, dropped a crate of Din’s weapons. Causing one of the blasters to discharge on impact. A red bolt ricocheted wildly through the garage.
There was a mad dash of panic as everyone scattered.
Amara dove over Adi, shielding him instinctively.
Peli ducked behind crates.
Boba shifted in front of Fennec without hesitation.
Gregor—ever the immovable object—stood his ground. The red bolt hitting his welding mask and fizzled out harmlessly, the mask holding firm.
Din stood on the ramp of the Sintas, his hand hovering over the blaster at his hip, clenching and releasing with visible restraint. It was clear he was trying very hard not to shoot the droid on principle.
Adrenaline pumped in everyone’s veins.
Once the moment passed, Fennec noticed Boba still positioned in front of her—his first instinct having been to protect her. The realization settled deep in her chest.
Amara groaned softly as she pushed off of Adi, who was still a little shaken but unhurt. With Boba’s help, she checked him over, brushing debris from his clothes, inspecting for injuries.
Din watched silently. He noticed how Amara glanced to Boba with a flicker of fear in her eyes. Boba nodded—both he and Fennec were fine. Only then did Amara release a long-held breath.
Din let out a breath too—one no one noticed.
No one had looked at him to check if he was okay. Not that it was expected. In the covert, you didn’t ask. You didn’t coddle. But watching how they all looked out for one another made him miss something he hadn’t thought of in a long time: the soft brown eyes of Sorgan.
Just as he turned to help Peli, Amara reached out and gently stopped him with a hand hovering in front of his chest.
“Hey,” she said softly. “You okay? Any injuries?”
He sucked in a different kind of breath. She didn’t have to ask that. But she did.
“I’m okay,” he said, the words slower than he intended. “Thanks.”
It was all he could offer. Amara simply nodded, then walked with him toward Peli’s hiding spot.
The mechanic was furious—at herself, at the droid, at the near disaster. Amara stepped in quickly, placing a hand on her arm to keep her from storming across the garage and dismantling the poor droid on the spot.
“Peli, it’s okay,” she soothed. “Everyone’s safe. No need to take it out on him. I’m sure V-D4 feels terrible. Don’t you, V-D4?”
The droid lowered its head in shame. It was pitiful, really.
“Just… don’t let him handle anything heavier than a wrench until I get back from Felucia,” Amara said. “When I return, I’ll fix his coordination issue. Easy fix. No biggie. Okay?”
“Fine,” Peli muttered. It was the only thing she could say. She wanted to apologize—to all of them—but the words wouldn’t come out.
Din stepped forward, placing a hand gently on her shoulder. “Peli,” he said calmly. “It was an accident. No one was hurt. No one’s blaming you. Okay?”
She couldn’t bring herself to meet the T-visor in front of her. He was giving her a pass. And Maker help her, she didn’t feel like she deserved it.
If this had been three years ago—even two—Din would’ve shot the droid on the spot. That alone broke her heart a little. Not because he didn’t do it... but because it reminded her how much he had changed

CHAPTER 4: THE BEGINNING - PART V
Still no response.
Fennec didn’t need years to understand Boba—not that she’d known him long anyway—but she did understand people. It’s what made her an effective assassin. Everyone feared something. And she’d learned early on that one of Boba’s deepest fears was the safety of those he loved. He kept his circle small for a reason.
Too much trust could cost lives. It was a lesson carved deep into the bones of the galaxy, especially during the fall of the original Bounty Hunter’s Guild. Too many people trusted too many unknowns with too much—bounty credits, personal details, ship codes, all in the name of a “code” few actually lived by. Boba had learned from that mistake. As the new Guild leader of Tatooine, he made it simple: prove yourself or don’t bother coming back. Fail, and you're out.
But this fear she sensed now wasn’t about the safety of his family. It was personal—the kind that came from the heart.
“You’re not the only one,” Fennec said quietly. “I’m afraid too.”
She meant it. Not in a performative way. Not as a way to earn sympathy. Just truth. This was her new life now—maybe even her new family—and the vulnerability that came with that scared her. Caring scared her. But she’d made a silent vow: if she had people again, she’d protect them as if they were her own. No matter her feelings, family would always come first. That, she understood. That, she respected.
But pretending the fear wasn’t there? That it could be locked away and ignored? That wasn’t strength—it was surrender.
Boba stayed silent, his eyes locked on Amara and Adi as they moved in and out of the Sintas.
“Everyone’s afraid, Boba,” she continued, her tone soft but resolute. “It’s what makes us feel alive. You, of all people, know how short life is. There’s a difference between being cautious and being paranoid.”
He didn’t answer.
Not because he didn’t want to—okay, maybe partly because of that—but also because he couldn’t find the words. His voice seemed to catch in his throat. And honestly, he liked hearing hers. But he also knew if he stayed silent too long, she’d take it as confirmation of his fears. That wasn’t something he wanted.
So, Boba cleared his throat. There was something about Fennec that made him nervous… and bold.
“I’m glad you’re by my side, Fenn,” he said, trying not to stumble. “I hope you know how grateful I am that you’re my right hand…”
He paused. The words he wanted to say stuck somewhere just behind his teeth.
“…that you’re my partner in crime.”
Three unspoken words echoed inside his chest.
It wasn’t what Fennec had hoped to hear—but she understood what he meant.
“Of course, Boba. No place I’d rather be,” she replied. “I’m here for you… always.”
And tucked between every syllable: I love you.
Neither of them said more. But they both understood what had just passed between them.
Boba was quietly thankful for his helmet—it hid the blush rising in his cheeks. Fennec was equally grateful for hers, shielding the ear-to-ear smile she couldn’t suppress.
After a pause, Boba spoke again.
“With regards to Mara… she’s one of the best people I know.” He added quickly, “Present company excluded, of course.”
Fennec bit the inside of her cheek, trying not to smile. She offered a silent thanks to the Maker for helmets.
“I’m biased—she’s my daughter,” Boba continued. “But you see how hard she works. Not just for Adi. For everyone. She deserves someone good. Mando’s honourable. The way he fought for his kid—his passion, his loyalty—those are rare qualities. And they’d balance Mara’s. The way she loves Adi… I never thought I’d see that kind of devotion again. But then I saw it in Mando. Call it an old man’s wish, but… when I saw that, I knew.”
Fennec let out a soft chuckle. “That’s so sweet, old man. You just gave me a toothache.”
“Degbaronbgee,” Boba muttered under his breath. Smartass.
“You know I’m kidding.” Her voice softened. “It’s amazing how much you care about her. Not many fathers would. It’s one of the many things that I…”
She hesitated.
“…one of the things that makes you special.”
Boba turned his helmet toward her, visor tilted slightly down in that way he had when he was being earnest. “I’d act that way about anyone I love. Or loved. I’d fight tooth and nail to make sure they knew. That they never had to doubt it.”
Fennec blinked. Her cheeks flushed again. Did he just—?
No. No, he couldn’t have meant it like that. Could he?
It’s one thing to imply something through sentiment. Another thing entirely to say it aloud.
Now wasn’t the time. She didn’t even know what she wanted. And so—classic Fennec—she dodged.
“So… why does Amara call you ‘Babeh’?” she asked, teasing tone dialed to full.
Boba didn’t sound annoyed. If anything, she could hear the smile in his voice.
“When she was learning to speak, she kept trying to say my name,” he said. “But she couldn’t get the hard O sound. Just kept calling me ‘Babeh.’ It stuck. Every time she says it, I see that three-year-old girl with wild hair, running barefoot through the house. And all I want to do is scoop her up and protect her from the world.”
His voice quieted.
“When she lost Ca’tra, I didn’t think she’d make it. Honestly? If she didn’t have Adi… I don’t think she would’ve. When I lost Sintas, the only thing that kept me going was Mara. Knowing I was the only one she had left. And that it was my job to protect her.”

CHAPTER 4: THE BEGINNING - PART IV
The Mand'alor started walking towards the ship, more specifically towards Amara, when he was faced by a new face, well helmet, that had blocked his path. A stout, shorter man, whose arms were thicker than his neck, the man was certainly intimidating, not to Din but to anyone else entering the shop he would certainly make people think twice. His face hidden by a welder’s face shield added to the intimidation factor, after all that was one of the reasons Boba wore his mask. In the stout man’s hands, he held a hammer, big enough to cause some serious damage in either a person or ship. His meaty fists were easily the thickness of Din’s thighs. Din simply stood in silence, regarding the shorter man, not sure if he should say something. The man looked him up and down, almost as one predator measures up another predator, with a loud grunt, the shorter man nodded his head and wandered off.
Unbeknownst to Din, he passed Gregor’s test, although the man didn’t say much, he would make sure anyone who would be alone with his employer for days on end, would stand up to scrutiny. If they couldn’t handle the silence and the measuring up, they didn’t deserve to be in her presence.
Din brushed off the encounter with the welder mask and came to stand beside Amara, as they finished loading the rest of his stuff onto her ship.
“Beautiful ship”
“Thanks, I do my best to look after it”
“What’s her name?”
“Sintas” Din noticed how Amara and Boba shared a quick look, at her uttering the ship name. Maybe he’ll be able to learn something about the name in their travels.
“Beautiful name”
“I agree” Boba answered, Boba simply eyed the younger mandalorian, and Din took his cue, he knew when he wasn’t wanted, “I'm gonna punch in the coordinates into the nava computer” Din offered, Amara nodded in response. While Din punched in the coordinates. A few minutes had passed before Amara appeared in the cockpit beside Din, she began running diagnostics to make sure the ship was ready to fly immediately, he knew the diagnostics were more for his benefit than her actually fearing her ship wasn’t going to fly. It was a subtle gesture of trust on her part, and he appreciated it. After all, Felucia was a long way, the planet had few landing ports and even fewer places to land beyond civilization.
“When we get to Felucia, I think it best if we land somewhere that’s secluded. Port docking is just too much of a giveaway, in my experience. I prefer landing away from people, as often as I can.”
“I agree”
“You do?”
“Yes, but if anything happens to my ship, just know I’m taking it out of your hide” Amara threatened, Din looked at her stoic features for a few seconds, before she began to laugh, “relax, I’m kidding.”
“You’re gonna have to eventually trust me” he had told her, when they were alone in the cockpit.
“First we do, then we trust” she offered flatly not looking at him, but rather at the diagnostic report that appeared on the screen before her, that ended the discussion right there and Din could respect her apprehensiveness.
—— *** ——
While everyone else was doing their part to help put the garage in order, Boba and Fennec stood resting against one of Amara’s empty stations, watching from the sidelines.
“Are you sure about this?” Fennec whispered conspiratorially.
Boba had told her of his plan to introduce Mando to his daughter, long before the Mandalorian had ever reached out to Boba. Ever since Boba had the run in with the Sarlacc pit, he was reminded that life was short and there were things he needed to be sure were taken care of; one of them being his daughter, he needed to make sure she was happy in every way.
“About what?” Boba asked, feigning ignorance, Fennec’s lips curled slightly in amused irritation.
“About Mando and Amara?”
“Only thing I'm truly sure about is my daughter’s love for people and life. There’s only one person I've seen who has that same kind of love, and he died in her arms almost two years ago. Mando is a good and just man, he puts those close to him first in his life, he fights for them to the end, even if it means his life. If there ever was someone worthy enough to earn my daughter’s love and my respect, it’s him”, Boba doesn’t even bother to hide the warm pride in his voice for both Amara and Din.
“You want them to be together? Even though it’s been almost two years since she lost Ca’tra?” Fennec is no stranger to love, she had a lover long ago, someone who held her heart completely. Unfortunately, they had been killed by a rival gang, that’s the way these things happened from time to time. However, she made sure to avenge her love, when she did her heart that had lived for him, became ice cold to the thought of someone replacing him. She always used to fight the idea of someone else taking his place, except in the past few years, her icy walls had started to crack under the seismic charge of the man beside her.
“I want her to be happy, I don't want her to end up like me, afraid to take a chance on having something, something that could make her life just a little more special.”
“You’re afraid?” She couldn’t hide the astonishment out of her voice.
“Hmmm?”
“Boba, I know you heard me” she gritted out.
“Did I?”
“Why are you afraid to take a chance?” Her curiosity spiked, and before she could control her tongue, the question stumbled out. It wasn’t just the concept of fear coming from Boba, but it almost sounded like he related to Amara’s situation in more than one way.
Boba continued to stoically look out towards the others without answering her, his silence had driven Fennec to aggravatingly ask, “seriously?”

CHAPTER 4: THE BEGINNING - PART III
Din had been so distracted by his last encounter with Amara that he didn’t even notice Boba already heading toward the hatch—the same one the old man had come barreling out of the day Din first met Boba’s love.
Fennec followed behind Boba like a silent sentinel, eyes sharp, posture tense, always watching his back. Not that anyone in their right mind would try to jump this trio—Boba, Fennec, and Din—all armoured up and armed to the teeth. Anyone foolish enough to attack them was clearly suicidal or deeply misinformed.
Boba knocked on the hatch. No answer.
Din’s free hand instinctively rested on his blaster.
Boba knocked again. This time, through the enhanced audio of Din’s helmet, he heard a familiar female voice yell from within:
“No, no! Get back! Customers shouldn’t see a bunch of droids first! Don’t you remember what happened the last time a customer saw you? Especially when they didn’t like you? You almost got disintegrated. I’ll get it!”
The hatch hissed open—and sure enough, there stood Peli in the flesh.
Clearly, no one had told her they were coming. Her eyes landed on the glossy green Mandalorian helmet staring straight at her, and her mouth dropped open so wide a womp rat could’ve crawled in and rented space.
She reached for the hatch to slam it shut, but Din spoke first.
“Peli, it’s okay—they’re with me.”
She froze, recognizing the modulated voice. Her eyes darted behind Boba and landed on Fennec’s sleek black-and-orange helmet. The memory clicked. The first bounty Din had taken on Tatooine. Peli hadn't exactly been eager to relive that incident.
She stumbled backward, her voice high and shocked as she pointed toward Fennec. “Ain’t this the girl you were supposed to kill?”
Din thanked his helmet for hiding the flush on his face.
Fennec chuckled. “He did his best. But circumstances changed.”
With that cryptic comment, she breezed past Peli into the garage, Boba trailing behind her.
Din lingered for a moment, puzzled.
“Peli, I thought you had your own shop. What happened?”
“Oh, let me tell you how the Force finally smiled on me,” she said, practically glowing with smug satisfaction. “Miss Amara? She’s a savvy one—not to mention magic with a hydrospanner. A few months back, I had trouble with one of my droids—you remember, the one you nearly disintegrated? Anyway, I asked her to take a look. She had it not only fixed, but improved, in no time flat."
She started walking deeper into the garage, and Din followed as she talked.
"Turned out we were practically neighbours. So we got to chatting. One thing led to another... and I helped her see the benefits of combining our shops.” She shot him a smug grin. “Of course.”
“Of course,” Din muttered dryly.
"After a month or two of haggling, she offered me a pretty stack of credits for my place. And—get this—she brought me on to help out. Now I split the work fifty-fifty, pick my own hours, still take on my own clients. Best part? I've got actual competent hands around here instead of malfunctioning droids. Especially that quiet one—he's got very strong hands."
Din didn’t know why, but the way she said that made something crawl down his spine.
Peli beamed. “Personally, I think I came out on top of the deal.”
Din wasn’t so sure. The more he got to know Amara, the more he suspected she was always ten moves ahead. Still, he gave Peli credit—she’d carved herself a sweet situation.
As they walked farther in, Peli continued her usual chatter. She even twisted around, scanning behind them. “Where’s the little womp rat? Don’t tell me you left him in the satchel again.”
Din took a breath. Time to tell her.
“I found his kind,” he said quietly. “He went to live with them.”
Peli stopped, then gave a slow, thoughtful nod. “He’s safe. That means you did a good thing. Never forget that.”
Din didn’t know how to respond. No one had ever told him that before. Not about the sacrifice, the risk, the losses. Not about the good in it.
Though she couldn’t see it, he smiled behind the helmet. “Thank you.”
His attention drifted away from the tiny mechanic and toward Boba and Fennec, who were now handing off supplies to Amara and Adi. The kid’s eyes went wide at the sheer arsenal being loaded onto the ship.
Din chuckled under his breath. Naïve. But sweet.
“He’s another one who needs a good man in his life,” Peli said suddenly.
Din didn’t respond. That wasn’t his place. Adi had a mother, and from everything Din had seen, she was doing an exceptional job. The kid had heart. Courage. Curiosity. And not a trace of arrogance, despite being raised by a woman who could likely outshoot, outfly, and outsmart most men Din knew.
Well—from what he’d seen so far.
His visor lingered on Amara as she laughed with Fennec and Adi. She looked relaxed. Confident. That light in her eyes—he remembered it. The same spark from when she looked at Boba that first day.
Maybe he stared a second too long.
“She also needs a good man in her life,” Peli added, not so subtly.
Din turned his helmet toward her with a slow swivel.
She raised her hands. “Alright, alright,” she said, backing off with a smirk and wandering away.
Pushing her comment out of his mind, Din took a moment to admire the ship in front of him. Sleek. Sharp. Definitely Post-Empire. Bigger than the Razor Crest. Armed to the teeth. Clearly customized—he had no doubt Amara had fine-tuned every inch of it.
Unlike his poor Crest, there was no visible carbon scoring, no detached panels flapping in the wind. It was clean. Pristine. He wouldn’t be surprised if it was brand new.
His gaze returned to Amara and Adi. She was crouched slightly, speaking to her son with an unmistakable look of maternal instruction. He couldn’t hear her words, but from her body language alone, he could almost hear the lecture.
And Maker help him, he smiled.

CHAPTER 4: THE BEGINNING - PART II
Adi finally looked up, hearing his mother step in front of him. Her demeanour was calm, exuding confidence. He wished he could be that strong—like her. She never seemed to have the fears he did, always so sure of herself, always knowing the right thing to say or do.
As Adi quietly admired his mother’s courage, she placed her hands gently on his shoulders, urging him to meet her gaze.
“Adi, it’s going to be okay,” she said softly. “Gregor will be in charge while I’m gone. There’s nothing to be afraid of, my love. Do you trust me?”
Adi gave a simple nod.
“Good. Does your communicator still work in case you need me?”
“Yeah, of course! I’m not two, Ama.”
She flicked his forehead lightly in mock reprimand. “Hey, I’m your mother. I will always worry about you. And I only worry because I love you. One day, when you have kids of your own, you’ll understand.”
“I know.” He hesitated, then added, “I’m just… I’m worried about you too. If I’m not there to watch over you, how will I know you’re okay? What if something happens? I trust Mando, but what if the bounty—or some thug—tries to hurt you or gets the upper hand? I don’t…”
His voice cracked. He couldn’t bear to keep looking her in the eye. This was too raw.
Amara moved her hand from his shoulder to his cheek, caressing it with that familiar, comforting tenderness only a mother could give. Adi leaned into the touch and closed his eyes. He needed that. One last moment of reassurance.
“I don’t want to lose you too,” he whispered. “I’ve already lost two fathers and a mother. I can’t lose you, mom.”
Amara didn’t answer right away. She knew how hard it had been for him to say that. She was proud of him for being able to speak his heart—something many men struggled with. She wished she could give him a guarantee. But the last time she’d left on a hunt… things hadn’t gone well. In fact, they could have gone tragically wrong.
She gently wiped a tear from his cheek.
“Adi, I wish I could promise you there’d be no danger. But you know as well as I do—things can happen, even on planet. What I can promise is this: I will fight to come back to you. I will never stop fighting to get back to you.” She leaned in slightly. “And you, of all people, know I can take care of myself. I’d take on an entire army if they stood between me and you. Okay?”
Adi couldn’t help the smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. Anyone else might’ve said that just to be comforting—but not his mother. She meant it. And she had the track record to back it up. The fear that had gripped him began to loosen its hold. His mother had never broken a promise. And he knew this wasn’t going to be the first.
“Please, my dear, try not to worry too much. And remember—I’m not going alone. I’ve got a big, scary Mandalorian watching my back.”
“I have no doubt Mando would be more than happy to cover your back.” His smirk deepened. “If not cover it, at least watch it.”
Amara scoffed at his teasing, giving his upper arm a playful smack.
“Ill check in as often as I can. Deal?”
“Deal.” Adi’s smile was tinged with hope, and Amara couldn’t help but smile back.
“Ama,” he said slyly, “since you’ve now convinced me you’re not in any real danger... if you happen to find a moment of free time—say between dodging blasters and hunting bounties—could you maybe, possibly, pick up some parts for my pod-racer? You know, if you just happen to stumble across any.”
That mischievous grin again. Makers, she loved that grin. He could pivot from heartfelt emotion to shameless opportunist in a heartbeat.
Amara let out a soft laugh. “Yes, if I have time, I’ll see if I can find something for your pod-racer. Though I doubt I’ll be browsing any mechanic shops out there.”
She ruffled his hair affectionately before turning to check that his schedule, task list, and chores were all in order. She needed to be sure everything was set before she left.
—— *** ——
Din, Boba, and Fennec arrived about two hours after the suns rose. Now they stood outside the garage, loading the Mand’alor’s supplies onto their backs.
Din wasn’t exactly sure what he’d done to deserve an entourage on his way back—maybe it was for protection, or maybe just insurance to make sure he didn’t put his foot in it again. More specifically, to make sure he didn’t do anything else to upset Amara.
It had been a few days since that dinner at Boba’s palace. The morning after, during breakfast, Din noticed Amara pulling aside the Theelin woman—Pana—before they sat down to eat. She’d asked him and Boba to keep Adi distracted while she had a “talk” with the bounty hunter.
Din hadn’t heard what was said. The two women had left the room, and when they returned, Amara looked... slightly irritated, maybe? He could never tell. Reading her expressions was like trying to see through beskar—impossible. It was like she wore a helmet for her feelings, masking every thought and intention when she wanted to.
Pana, on the other hand, looked downright terrified.
Obviously, whatever had gone down was about Adi. Din was almost certain of it.
As soon as they re-entered the dining hall, Pana walked straight over to the boy—with Amara standing silently beside him. She pulled Adi aside and apologized for her behaviour during their earlier conversation with Boba.
Afterward, Adi had come to tell the three of them what happened. He looked stunned. Apparently, Pana had not only apologized but also said she wanted to be friends.
Amara feigned surprise at the news, playing the part beautifully—but Din knew better. He was sure she’d orchestrated the whole thing.
Honestly, if Pana treated Grogu the way she treated Adi, Din would’ve done far worse than put the fear of a Sith Lord into her—as Fennec had joked. No, Amara handled it with restraint. Terrifying, elegant restraint. And Din couldn’t help but respect her for it.

Thanks a lot , and have a good day/night 💕
@griffedeloup Thank you for requesting such a lovely fic idea for our favourite clone, 99.
I hope you enjoy this.

99 slowly moved down the hallway of Kamino as he cleaned the area close to the training rooms. He stood watching his fellow brothers running their drills. His hand held the broom a little tighter as he watched squad after squad accomplish what he couldn’t. There were times when he’d close his eyes at night, and he’d dream of running the training facility with his brothers, crouching down beside them, shooting the droids shoulder to shoulder, climbing over the barriers, and jumping for joy when they won.
A silent tear slid down his cheek as he watched group after group graduate and leave to fulfil their duties while he remained. He was nothing like them. He’d never be nothing like them.
It didn’t take the force to see how much he wanted to be a part of a team, to be included amongst his brothers.
“99?” You stood by the entrance as you saw him.
He cleared his throat before turning to look at you, “Yes, Commander?”
“99, you don’t have to call me Commander. We’re friends aren’t we?”
“I prefer calling you , Commander.”
You smiled and nodded, “Alright. So what are we watching?” You walked up beside him, looking over the railing.
“Charlie Squad.”
“How are they doing?”
“Not bad. Although it seems CT-5211 keeps trying to take charge.”
“That won’t bode well on the field. What would you do differently?”
“If I had a chance, I’d have him run his own mission, on the side. Rather than have him follow the leader. They’ll just keep budding heads.”
“Hmmmm, interesting. You have a good eye.”
“At least I have that,” he chuckled lightly.
“You know you’re appreciated and valued.”
He nodded as he limped away, “Thank you, Commander. I have to get back to my duties.”
You watched him walk away, you could feel his sadness through the force; you’ve always admired 99, even though he was different from others with his limited mobility and rapid ageing. The Kaminoans made a mistake when making 99, they claimed it was just a glitch in the system, but you had a sneaking suspicion they were trying to alter his genetic makeup.
Despite his differences he had more heart than any of the other clones you knew. You couldn’t help your smile as you watched him.
- - - - - - - - -
“99 please come to the training ground” you called for him.
“On my way, Commander.”
99 had a soft spot in his heart for you, he was fascinated when he watched you train with the cadets, as General Shaak Ti’s assistant. You were a Jedi Knight, a former padawan of General Ti’s, it was your job to train the Commanders.
He made his way to the training ground, slowly carrying his supplies. He froze when he saw you standing outside.
“Commander?”
You beamed as you looked at him, your smile reaching from one ear to the other, “Welcome 99.”
“Commander, why are you outside?”
“Well, I have a surprise for you.”
“For me?”
You nodded and motioned with your head for him to follow you, “Come on.” You both entered the training room, you stood as you watched Fox, Rex, Wolffe and Cody all standing ready for your orders, “What do you say wanna help us run a simulation?”
“Uh …” 99 looked from his brothers to you, “You… you did this for me?”
“You are part of this family.” Rex spoke moving closer.
“That’s right we’re all brothers.” Fox added.
“What do you say? Help us take down the Commander.” Cody offered holding out a blaster.
Wolff nodded as he looked at 99.
“Why did you do all this for me? I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.” 99 tried to reason within himself. No one had done anything this kind or wonderful; he looked into your eyes, wanting to understand why you’d go to such lengths for him.
Your hand gently rested on his shoulder as you looked at him, smiling brightly, “99, you have been my friend, that in itself is a tremendous thing. I don’t have many friends in the Jedi Order. As you know my ideas aren’t viewed with the greatest welcome, but you have always been there for me, listening to my ideas even when they’re nonsense.”
“They’re not nonsense.”
“And that’s why we’re friends. So what do you say, wanna take me down with your brothers?”
99 smiled, loading the blaster with a power clip, “Locked and loaded.”
Three hours later, 99 was waving the winning flag. You smiled watching Rex and Cody lift him up, celebrating their win. It brought a smile to your face seeing him live out one of his dreams.
You saw him sitting in the locker room, smiling to himself, “Good day?” You sat beside him.
“The best. I … I can’t believe you did this when … when there’s nothing worthy about me.”
“What? Who says?”
“Everyone.”
“Well that’s not true, I don’t say that. Rex, Cody, Fox and Wolffe didn’t say that. In fact, they all appreciated what you did. Master Ti doesn’t say that either. Anyone who doesn’t see you as someone worthy is someone not worth knowing.”
“No. It’s because there isn’t anything to love about me.”
You looked at him, shaking your head, “There is always something left to love, 99. There’s plenty of you to love. You’re sweet, kind, warm, funny …” you bumped his shoulder, “it’s not about what’s on the outside, 99. It’s about what is on the inside. There’s plenty to love on the inside 99, you prove that time and time again. After all, you think there’s plenty of me to love. Right?”
- - - - - - - - - -
99 remembered that moment as the best day in his life, his only regret was that he wished he could’ve told you how much he did love you, when he heard you didn’t make it back from your mission, it had been his greatest regret. He stood in front of your portrait, one of the cadets had drawn it in honour of your passing.
“Hello cyar’ika,” 99 gently touched the portrait, “Been a while since I stopped by, things are getting out of hand, we’re getting ready for an attack on Kamino…” he let out a sigh, “I have a feeling I might be seeing you soon. You asked me once if I loved you. This is what I wanted to say but I couldn’t, ‘Do I love you? My God, if your love were a grain of sand, mine would be a universe of beaches.’ When I see you, I’ll be sure to tell you.”

Your eyes fluttered open, as you took in the ceiling above your head, only to be obscured by the medic droid flashing the scanner right into your eyes and down your body. You groaned as the light from the scanner practically blinded you.
“Patient is fine, mild concussion. Patient will remain for one more day.” That’s all the droid reported as it hovered over to the next patient.
There was too much noise and too much light, you used your hand to block out some of the light, when you saw a hand reach over your head and turn down the lighting. You let out a sigh of relief, as you heard the privacy screen door close.
“You’re lucky you got away with only a scratch.” Wolffe’s voice boomed over you, you had a feeling he was doing it on purpose to make you realize how easy things could’ve ended for you.
“Isn’t that why you always call me your lucky trooper?” You teased, wanting to push his buttons.
His brow furrowed as he looked at you crossing his arms over his chest, “You really want to test me, at this moment. You had no regard for your own safety when you pushed me out of the way of that explosion.”
You looked him in the eyes as best you could, “Wolffe … I … I couldn’t just do nothing…”
He let out a sigh of understanding, because the truth was if it was him, he would’ve done the same. Both of you understood there was something between you, yet, neither of you discussed it but you both knew. He was in love with you. You were in love with him. Truly, he couldn’t be that upset, because if it were he and he saw a grenade heading your way, he would’ve pushed you out of the way too.
“Fine. But … you can’t do this to me … again …” he subtly gripped your hand, squeezing it tight, fighting the urge to kiss you. He wanted to show you how much he cared, how much he loved you but somewhere along the way you both decided without even a discussion you’d wait until the end of the war. Why? He had no idea. At the time it made sense, but now …
“I promise,” you whispered, as you squeezed his hand back, “Really, I’m fine. It’s just a mild concussion. I still remember you, and your annoying habit of rolling your eyes.” You smirked hoping to ease his stress.
“Well … as long as you remember the important things,” Wolffe looked into your eyes, saying all the things neither of you dared to speak out loud.
A soft smile graced your lips as you looked at him, imagining what it would’ve been like to kiss those lips you thought so often about. You tried to get comfortable but the bun on the back of your head was bothering you more than you realized.
“What’s wrong with you?” He narrowed his eyes as he noticed you kept shifting your head.
“It’s this stupid bun, it’s making it uncomfortable for me to keep my head back.”
Wolffe reached over without even being prompted to help, he gently lifted your head and started to undo the bun on the top of your head, the only problem was it felt as though there was a giant knot somewhere and it was hurting. You tried to shift your head to help him get a better angle.
“Would you stop, I’m trying to fix your hair, so hold still.”
“I’m trying but something’s pulling on my scalp, hold on.” You reached behind you and gently undid the knot that was causing you pain, once you undid it, Wolffe ran his fingers through your hair, loosening it as best he could.
“Better?”
You nodded, as enjoyed the warmth from his hands as he gently rested your head on the pillow again. You leaned into his hand when he didn’t remove it right away. Enjoy the way his rough hand rubbed against your skin, the way the scent from his wrist filled your nose.
“Much better” you hummed in contentment, feeling the bed shift as he sat beside you.
“You really scared me. When I saw you go flying … I thought …” his voice died as he fought back the tears, “I can’t keep doing this. I can’t just act like it doesn’t matter, when you’re the only thing that does.”
You opened your eyes and looked into his, your hand reaching up to wipe away the tears.
“I don’t want to act like it doesn’t kill me not to be in your arms, or to hold you in mine. I don’t want to keep doing this either.”
Wolffe leaned down, smiling as he gently pressed his lips against yours, memorizing how your lips felt and moved against his. “When you get released, you and I need to actually sit down and talk.”
“Talk?” You smirked.
He grinned a mischievous smile, “Well, maybe a very specific form of talking.” He chuckled as he kissed your lips again.

CHAPTER 3: THE AGREEMENT - PART VII
Amara sat in the chair to the right of the room, facing Boba who was still wearing his helmet and took his seat behind his desk.
Din sat in the chair to the left of the room, the chair closest to the wall of weapons. It reinforced with him how much Amara truly trusted Boba, allowing a stranger to take the seat that was strategically closer to the wall of weapons.
Boba didn’t waste any time, he wanted to rest just as much as anyone else, “I’ve managed to find three quarries that I believe will do nicely for you, Mando, at least to start off with; I’ll give you one to begin with, if Amara still agrees to fly with you upon your return I’ll give you the last two.”
Din nodded in agreement.
Boba handed over the first puck, pressing it, a Vurk male, more greyish than green in appearance, with a slight red-crest appeared. “He’s wanted for hijacking a communication signal that prevented several dozen transports from landing on Ryloth. The bounty isn’t much, 15,000 credits, but it’s a start.”
Slightly more than Din thought his initial quarry would be worth, this could work. Din looked to Amara to see if she gave her approval of the quarry, at the end of the day if she had a problem with it, he wasn’t going to be flying anywhere.
Amara simply nodded to Din’s unasked question.
He grabbed the puck and pocketed it.
She shifted in her seat, indicating she was about to stand and leave, when he realized he still needed to make it right and apologize, without thinking Din reached across and rested his hand on her chair, “Wait, please!” Din didn’t intend for his request to sound like a beg, but the words were already uttered.
Amara glanced towards Boba, readjusting herself to properly sit in the chair, once she was seated, he retracted his hand. Amara looked at the black T-visor that was to the left of her.
“Before you go, I need to apologize to the both of you” Din stated in a monotone voice, glancing from Amara to Boba.
She remained silent, keeping her face stoic and unmovable, at this declaration.; doing her best to hide her shock.
Boba gestured towards Din to continue.
“Great Boba, you have generously offered not only a place for me to stay, but work to sustain myself. Even connecting me with a mechanic-pilot who has an impressive reputation. My behaviour earlier at the garage was inexcusable.”
Boba glanced from Mando’s visor to his daughter’s eyes, to anyone else, she remained stoic, stern, unmoving, but he could see her eyes widen ever so slightly, revealing her true surprise to Mando’s words and sincerity.
“Ms. Vel,” Din continued “I apologize for my outburst during the meeting at your garage, I should never have presumed to think so ill of you. The Great Boba clearly values you and holds you in high esteem, that knowledge alone should’ve been enough for me to exert more than a little bit of patience. I apologize for any insult I caused towards your reputation or your family, it was thoughtless and spoken in anger. As a token of my sincere apology Great Boba, I would like to offer you 25% commission of all my quarries, and to begin to repay any debt I owe towards the generosity you have shown me. Ms. Vel, I offer as a token of my sincere apology 15% commission of all my quarries, you help me capture, in addition to whatever you wish to charge me for hiring you. I hope this will begin to heal the rift I unknowingly caused between all of us, due to my reckless and hurtful speech.”
Amara was floored and speechless.
First no one ever apologized with such respect and dignity, he was eloquent. Even when she’d proven she was right, oftentimes the apology she received would be a grunted ‘fine’. Here, this man was ready to give up almost 50% of the credits he would earn from capturing any quarry. It was beyond a thoughtful gesture, and didn’t sit right with her. She looked from the man to her left, to her father. Her eyes, as expressive as always, told Boba all he needed to know by that look. Boba knew his daughter, the apology and the gesture of the commission in addition to her fee was more than enough for her.
“Mando'' Boba began, “thank you for the apology you issued, it was well spoken. However I’ll not speak on behalf of Amara, that is an issue between the two of you. Secondly, with regard to repaying your conceived notion of a debt,” Boba shook his head, “there is no need my friend. You owe me nothing. I am happy to help the new Mand'alor, and a friend who has proven himself in battle. Thirdly, I will only take my standard 15% commission, no more, no less. Continue to honour and respect my home, my people, the ones I love, and we’ll have no problems.”
Din nodded in gratefulness, at least he wouldn’t lose all his money.
Amara watched as her father turned his head towards her, and from her peripheral she could see the Mand'alor’s helmet turn to her as well. The tears she’d been holding were fighting to break free.
Seriously! How many times was she going to cry today? Ugh! Amara quickly cleared her throat, not wanting to show any weakness to the man who was king to her left.
She turned her eyes to look directly at his visor, Din swore she could see through them, this must have been the third or fourth time that day when she locked eyes with him despite the helmet.
“I accept your apology. However, you do not need to pay me the additional 15% commission, simply pay a flat 10% commission, which will cover all expenses, my fee, usage of the ship and the cover of fuel costs. Any additional fees, will only be if you should break something on my ship, agreed?”
Amara stuck out her hand to shake his, for the third time that day. Din shook it without hesitation, and released it just as quickly learning from earlier.
“Thank you.” Din nodded.
“I owe you an apology, Mand'alor,” that was the first time anyone addressed him by his official title, “I never should have jumped to conclusions about you. The Great Boba filled me in on what you lost. I apologize greatly for assuming things I had no right to;” Amara’s vision never faltered, “I must say, you are a lot stronger than I would be, if I had to give up my son, I would be a mess, and probably never recover.”
Din sat there silent, he didn’t want to respond for fear that the tears that were in his throat wouldn’t be contained, remembering having to let Grogu go always made his heart ache.
“How about this,” she continued, “from this point forward, we start anew. Hello, my name is Amara Vel, I’m a kickass mechanic and pilot, and I agree to help you out with your next three missions.”
Din took a minute to swallow the tears in his throat. “Hello Amara Vel, pleasure to meet you” Din nodded in response.
Boba couldn’t help but smile under his helmet watching these two.

CHAPTER 3: THE AGREEMENT - PART VI
“What didn’t you mean, my love?”
Came his mother’s voice from the right-side of the dining room, her voice gentle and kind, Din couldn’t help thinking ‘Really? This woman beat a man within an inch of his life?’
“I think I may have offended Mando.” Adi stated glancing from his mother’s face towards the floor.
Amara’s hand came to rest on her son’s back gently rubbing circles, he was such a sensitive soul, he never wanted to cause anyone undo pain.
Din choked back a sigh, Amara’s tenderness reminded him of the the times he would rub circles on Grogu’s back, when he felt sad, or scared, Adi’s downtrodden face reminded him of Grogu so much, it broke his heart a little.
“Adi, you didn’t offend me.” Din tried to reassure the young man, he was cursing himself for not being quicker with the reassurance.
“Why do you think you offended him, my love?” Amara’s tone was sweet, gentle and just above a whisper, she didn’t want to attract attention to the situation. Only reason she’d even realized something was up, was because she was always acutely aware where her son was. She’d been on her way to talk to Boba and Adi who were with the hunters, when she saw him move towards the Mand'alor.
“It’s my fault.” Din began, “He asked if I was hungry to eat, I was just taking my time to think of the best way to explain, he wouldn’t be seeing me eat. I’m sorry Adi, if I caused you to feel sad, that wasn’t my intention.”
Understanding flooded into Amara’s eyes, Din couldn’t help stare into them, but then both her and her son’s eyes were quite expressive, he had never met a foundling and a parent so in-sync before. It wasn’t necessarily her eye colour, which was beautiful regardless, but the emotions and vulnerability she held in them.
“Adi, I’m sure he wasn’t offended.”
Adi glanced towards his mother, her smile was warm and gentle, just like the tone of her voice, showing he didn’t need to be upset, “You sure?” He asked hesitantly.
“I’m sure” Din affirmed.
Adi looked from his mother to the stoic beskar helmet and smiled a thanks to Mando.
“Adi, you won’t see him eat, more than likely he already ate in the privacy of his room, am I correct?” Amara asked, directing the question to the man to her left.
Din nodded.
“You see …” she continued never faulting in keeping her focus on her son, “… His creed forbids him from showing his face to any living thing, so he can’t eat in front of us, that would require him to remove his helmet. He can join us for lively dinner conversations, and entertainment, but if he had to do anything that would require him to remove his helmet, he would have to excuse himself. Correct?”
Amara looked at his visor.
Din nodded in agreement. He was speechless, no one outside of the covert understood his creed and what it meant. Especially a non-Mandalorian stranger he just met earlier that day. He wondered how she knew what his creed meant. Boba clearly didn’t follow the creed, although he may have explained it to her when he originally set up the meeting or maybe when he spoke with her privately back at the garage?
Adi wanted to ask more about his creed, Amara could see the gears turning in her son’s head, she gently reached her right hand over and touched Adi’s left elbow.
Din noticed the move, the similarity of it to the one Boba had done earlier in the day when he was trying to get Amara’s attention, surprised him. It was the second time he noticed a similar gesture and reaction from both Boba and Amara, clearly they spent quite time together.
“Adi, I can explain more later okay, or maybe even he’d…” she gently directed to Din, “like to explain more. However, I believe Great Boba is about ready to begin.” Amara indicated as she nodded towards where Babeh was standing at the head of the table.
“Friends,” Boba’s booming voice filled the dining room, “Let us sit.”
Amara and Adi took their respective seats close to Boba.
Fennec sat on Boba’s right. Amara on his left. Din sat beside Fennec, while the other three bounty hunters filled in the rest.
“We are enjoying this meal, to welcome a new bounty hunter to the Tatooine Guild, Mando. Welcome, Mando.”
Din nodded his ‘thanks’, his visor shifting from Boba to Amara, whose gaze was held on Boba with what looked like pride and respect.
Boba continued “Let’s eat!”
Dinner passed on lively enough, conversations ranged from the current political situation in the inner core, to the remnant imps that some come across during their travels. Eventually, the conversation broke into three separate discussions, the bounty hunters talked about some of the best quarries they had gone after.
Fennec and Adi were having a lively conversation about a new hand-to-hand combat form Amara taught him earlier that day; Fennec gently advised Adi of different holds and grips to add to the form with Din interjecting where he could.
Boba and Amara were deep in conversation; his helmet rested in between him and Amara. The two of them so engrossed in conversation they appeared oblivious to the others.
As the night progressed, the three bounty hunters at the end of the table clearly showed their inebriation, as they each practically drunk their weight in alcohol. The female Theelin bounty hunter at the end of the table, started whispering, although she wasn’t as quiet as she hoped, some fairly suggestive things to the bounty hunter on her right, a Kyuzo male. Meanwhile, the human male bounty hunter to Din’s right had passed out.
Sensing the dinner more or less finished, Boba rose from his seat. “Thank you everyone for coming. Fennec would you please take Adi to his and Amara’s room?” Fennec nodded.
Boba looked to the two bounty hunters, who made plans for the evening, “Castyl, Pana, please help Shif out of the dining room to his bunk.” Both nodded, moving quickly to prepare to leave as soon as they could.
“Amara, Mando, follow me to my office, we have something to discuss before turning in.”, Boba donned his helmet again, without anything further. The rest stood and began to trickle out of the dining room.

CHAPTER 3: THE AGREEMENT - PART V
“Adi, told me she kicked the ass of some bounty hunter who tried something on her all the way to the Dune Sea, but he didn’t know what happened to him, is that just a child’s tale, or did that actually happen?”
“Why, you gonna try something?” Fennec asked, raising an eyebrow, eyes void of any kind of feeling or sentiment.
“No, of course not. I would never do that.”
“Just making sure.”
“I just want to know in case something happens with a quarry, if she can really defend herself?”
Fennec took a minute to consider his statement. “Very well.” She said, closing the distance between the two of them. “What Adi told you is the truth. It was about a year and a half ago, she had just moved to the new garage, the one you visited today. A bounty hunter, who will not be named, came to the garage. She was alone, busy with setting up a station, her back towards him, when he quietly snuck in. Seeing her ‘defenceless’, he strolled over to her and that’s when he tried to have his way with her. He never got even close. Arrogant bastard. She fought like a Nexu. He never expected her to be as strong as she was, nor did he think she had everything planned out. Amara is many things, but one thing she isn’t is careless, she plans for every eventual scenario, every possible contingency.”
Din realized that's probably why she hadn’t bothered to pay attention to them when they walked into her garage. More than likely, she registered them walking up to the speeder, planned what to do should they have tried to attack her.
Fennec continued, drawing Din out of his train of thought, “She has several hidden weapons cache throughout the garage, needless to say, she did beat his ass within an inch of his life. Once she was finished, she dragged his worthless kike bayan (dumbass) to a medcenter, he was in such bad shape, he had to be left in a bacta tank for a week. Without a thought she paid for his care. When he eventually woke up from his coma, they both came to an arrangement, he’d never step foot on Tatooine, and if she ever needed help at any time, he would have to answer it without hesitation. She even told him if she got word he attacked another living being or tried to force himself on anyone, she’d hunt him down with Boba’s help, and when they find him, they would take their time with him, until his life expired. He had no choice but to accept. Of course, once Boba learned about what happened, he wanted to murder the man himself, he didn’t care she paid to have him looked after. Yet, she forbade Boba from seeking vengeance, telling him they had come to an agreement and everything it entailed. She even reasoned with Boba saying since he didn’t actually accomplish anything there was no point to seek vengeance on a thought.”
Din nodded in silence, this woman was fierce, he understood why Boba was in love with her even more.
Fennec continued, “I‘ll tell you, she put the fear of a Sith Lord in that guy, from what I heard he gave up bounty hunting, has a nice krill farm on some backwater planet and is a pretty decent guy now with a family.” She headed to the door, “Now you need to get cleaned up, dinner is in an hour, just after the suns’ set.”
Din nodded, as soon as Fennec left, he replayed all her words. Not only did Amara beat the guy within an inch of his life, she paid for someone to look after him, and then had him turn his life around. Who were these people? Who was she? Din put the thought to the side and headed for the refresher, maybe he should up the percentages.
—— *** ——
Upon entering the dining room, Din could hear faint music and lively conversation from the other seven people who were clearly there to join for dinner. He saw the servants moving in and out of the dining room getting everything ready.
Fennec and Amara were standing off to the side talking and laughing. Amara’s laugh was infectious, it reigned from deep within her soul and was pure joy. Yet, the story Fennec told him kept replaying in his mind, seeing this tiny woman and trying to reconcile the story he heard. Maybe an opportunity would present itself allowing him a chance to spar with her. She must be a truly fierce fighter, every bit of a loth-wolf.
Din forced himself to look away from the two women and around the room, Boba was with Adi, they were talking to three other bounty hunters. Aside from Boba addressing Adi, it seemed the others were talking to Boba directly and ignoring Adi, a few times he saw the female Theelin bounty hunter roll her eyes, when Adi did his best to add to their conversation.
Din was doing his best not to let his anger take hold. He clenched and unclenched his fists a few times. Adi didn’t deserve to be treated like that, no one did. He even noticed how Adi didn’t have the same bright smile he had seen earlier in the garage.
Almost as soon as the Mandalorian entered, Adi saw him from his peripheral, he left the three hunters and his grandfather, and headed towards Mando.
“Hello again, Mando”
“Hello, Adi” Din smiled, under his helmet, at this energetic young boy. He wondered if Grogu would be like Adi when he grew up into what would be his teen years.
“I hope you're hungry, the food here is really good. The palace kitchen has some of the best cooks.”
Din didn’t respond to his statement right away, he didn’t want to overstep or say the wrong thing or end up offending Adi.
“Are you okay?” Adi asked, concern coming across his face after the Mandalorian hadn’t answered him in the past few minutes, realization hit his eyes, “Did I offend you? I’m sorry, I didn’t mean anything by it.” Adi quickly added.

CHAPTER 3: THE AGREEMENT - PART IV
“It was nice to meet you, Adi.” Din nodded to Adi and turned towards the door, before Boba and Din stepped out, he turned once more to the mother and son he began to respect, “Oh! And Adi, you don’t have to call me Mr. Mandalorian. Mando will do.”
Adi was flabbergasted by the Mandalorian, and made Adi start to bounce with excitement, “um … yeah .. you… also … you too .. I mean … as well”
“Breathe, Adi.” Amara chuckled.
Adi took a deep breath, “It was nice to meet you too … Mando.”
Boba and Din headed towards the cantina, Boba once again taking the lead with Din following a step behind. Halfway to the cantina, Boba turned to address Mando.
“Well you may have to work to improve your status with her, but I think you certainly have a fan in Adi.” Boba chuckled.
Din didn’t respond, but the smile under the helmet beamed with joy, despite his missteps, he had direction. For the first time in a year, he felt hopeful.

After his previous trek to the palace Din had been thanking the Maker the entire way back to Boba’s palace for the genius who invented the speeder. All he wanted to do was collapse on the bed in his room. The restless sleep, walking to Boba’s palace the day before, his constant missteps during his meeting with Amara, it all exhausted him.
He noticed as soon as he walked into the room, a meal was waiting for him on the table. Boba’s generosity knew no bounds, he was considerate making sure Din was looked after, how would he even begin to repay Boba. Din walked closer to the table, the smell of warm and fresh food was tempting. His stomach rumbled reminding him, outside of the leftovers he had when he woke up, he hadn’t eaten the rest of the day. He put away all his weapons and began to remove his armour to be more comfortable as he sat and ate.
By the end of the meal, Din started to think of a plan to repay Boba.
He could start with a few things, first he would do his best to be at peace with Amara. He needed to try and become friends with her. Maybe by showing he put forth effort to respect and dignify her, it would begin to alleviate some of the debt he felt he owed Boba.
Secondly, he would make sure to treat Adi like a person, something others hadn’t done. They were Boba’s love, he could see that as clear as day, they respected and loved Boba greatly. If Boba hadn’t mentioned he was in love with her, he would have thought Boba and Adi had never met before that day. He saw how Adi pretended to not know Boba, clearly more out of protection for them and for Boba as well. If enemies could exploit Boba’s weaknesses, there’s no telling what he would be willing to give up for them. Din made a silent vow at that moment, he would protect Amara and Adi as his own family, out of respect for Boba, he wouldn’t let any harm befall them.
Thirdly, maybe he could give a portion of the bounty to Boba and Amara, maybe even Adi.
Din just realized he didn’t even know how much he would have to pay to hire Amara and to pay for the ship. Would it be a flat rate? Would it be a percentage? Even if every puck he decided to take was worth 10,000 credits, he would gladly give 25% of his bounty to Boba, and at least 15% to Amara. That would leave him with more or less 6,000 credits that he could use towards building up his savings for purchasing a new ship, well maybe not a new ship but a fixer-upper at the least.
Din was pulled from his mental calculations by a knock at the door, donning his helmet once again, he opened the door expecting to see either Aola or Boba, instead standing before him was a pair of eyes he hadn’t expected to see.
Fennec stood there smirking into his T-visor, Din stepped aside motioning her in, this was going to be interesting.
“So…” she began as she entered the room, her arms behind her back as she walked in, “I heard you met Amara.” Her smirk turned into a grin.
“Mmhmm” was all Din responded
“So…”
“So.” he deadpanned.
“What do you think of her?”
“Why?” Sure now he could be all stoic, and not say the wrong thing.
“You do realize Boba tells me everything as his second, right?”
Din sighed knowing what she was referring to, “She touched a sore subject, by her comment.”
“That justifies calling her a child abuser?”
“It was spoken in anger and without thought. I didn’t mean it.”
Fennec was slowly walking the room, as they continued their conversation, she stood before the window that looked out to the Dune Sea.
“Can I offer some advice?” She addressed Din, keeping her back to him the entire time.
Din knew his misstep must have been greater than he had realized, if Fennec was here talking to him about it. That’s when it dawned on Din, he never actually apologized to Amara, sure he apologized to Boba, but not to her. Kriff!
“Sure”
“One. Think before you speak, you’ll realize it helps. Two, Amara is loyal as a loth-wolf, earn her trust and you’ll have a friend for life, a friend who will fight tooth and nail for you.” At that Fennec turned from the window to stare into Din’s visor, “And, three, hurt her again and I’ll beat the living daylights out of you.” Fennec said, smirking, but her eyes were dead set as the assassin within her raised its ugly head, Amara was certainly well loved and protected.
Din couldn’t help but let out a small raspy chuckle, “Understood.”, Fennec nodded. “Can I ask you a question, or am I on thin ice?” Din inquired.
“Go ahead.” Fennec nodded to him, while her arms were still crossed behind her back.
