There’s nothing shocking about a response like that; of course a great warrior would demean someone like himself. He doesn’t even have energy to wonder what brought something like that out of him---he knows where his own angst comes from, and it doesn’t exactly matter why he would open himself up like that. It could have been impulse, it could have been some subconscious yearning for comfort (that he knows he doesn’t deserve). It’s been put out there, he’s received a warrior’s input, and now he’s left with the expectation of wising up, one way or another.

While laying out on the ground and surrendering everything doesn’t sound like a bad idea (surely, paving the road for everyone else with his body will kill him and end this suffering), he’s stuck with the burden of living out his own life to honor those who have fallen for his father’s ambition. ...And for his own safety, though he had ultimately failed. There is nothing he could possibly offer to anyone, not warrior spirit, not strength, not wit, not even what little earthly possessions he may have left; and still, he’s pressured to live.

Damn.

“It’s a shame that I don’t have much to offer, then...” He’s certain he’s wasting the other’s time and patience---and thinking about how his father would have reprimanded such an admittance to weakness tenses his entire body---but he still has to keep going, does he not? Gather up the efforts, as this other has stated. “I’m far too meek for the field of battle, and my leadership skills never developed as they should have...” Why is he even getting this deep into conversation with someone he’s just met and been chided by? “The best I can offer is perhaps the services of an envoy.” Or anything that keeps him indoors, maybe even pushing papers out.

This is a sideblog to Kyushu no Monogatari, featuring historical-based OC, Ryuzoji Masaie, eldest son of Ryuzoji Takanobu. Takanobu is the guy who gets his ass kicked by the Shimazu in Okitanawate. Masaie was a frail kid and a poor leader, but Takanobu made him is heir anyway. So, when Takanobu was slain on the battlefield by the Shimazu, Masaie was forced into a corner and submitted to the Shimazu, inciting the defection of many Ryuzoji retainers. Masaie would eventually lose the entirety of his father’s domain when Ryuzoji retainer Nabeshima Naoshige gradually moved his way from “caring for Masaie” to independence.

So, hit me up if you’d be down to play with this frail boi and...maybe be his friend? :’)
