My First Solo Exhibition! I couldn't be more excited at the same time the things that are out of our, us people, hands added some serious changes to prepare for this exhibition.
I was back in Iran for unexpected life shattering loss of my forever young brother when I was accepted and given dates for this exhibition. My initial thoughts and sketches were totally meaningless at this time while the thought of "life must go on", for the sake of my parents at least, was pushing me to go ahead with the process.
There are total of fourteen multi-plate lino printed on fabric. I had planned to use Persian and Australian motifs alongside in order to take the viewer to a trip to far away to my motherland while traveling far away to Australia myself was part of the story as well. My prints ended up with lots of rain drops and tears while they have followed the composition and theme I had initially started.

Rockhampton Art Gallery- 10 February to 3 June 2018
Being part of Collection Intervention is a surreal chance to create a new work to sit along the stunning orchestra of the cream. From the start, my approach towards Collection Intervention has been of a student to her master. The process of choosing some of those works that inspire me most was like looking through someone else’s eyes and entering someone else’s world in an attempt to build a bridge to my own. There were 46 works in different mediums and style that I could select from. I connect best to works with people’s stories which led me to the figurative works. For this purpose I have chosen two paintings, three stoneware and two ceramics. Both of the paintings that I have selected have pictured a nude figure in an unearthly kind of state either by conflicting the inherent assumption of similar situation or modified concept of reality via exaggerated colours and proportions. These qualities created an otherworldly feel to me in which I’d rather to join them together as well as weighing them closer to our earthly habitat where it’s soil is used to create ceramics for our earthly needs. This challenge has forced me to think, dream and sketch different to my own colours and symmetrical compositions. My people are amongst the high and low containers fulfilment.
Arthur MURCH- Boy and dog 1972 This piece presents artist’s signature theme and technique. There is a lovely atmosphere in the background that has been reflected on the boy and dog’s body. Inviting your eyes to wander around the low-contrast warm variation of colours being as strong as the subject itself was the main attraction for me willing to study a composition of colours while treating my subjects as if they still life, frozen in time, rather static.
Albert Tucker- Girl surprised 1970
Unlike Arthur Murch’s style, Albert Tucker’s work are full of expressions and the subject is explored by their feelings and movements rather than body proportion standards. I felt the need to borrow his girl surprised in the same frame with the boy and dog to set off the path to a new imaginative story.
Victor GREENAWAY- Oil Jug 1979
This beautiful jug for me in this piece resembles the quality of human. It’s elegance will live for an eternity yet it’s fragile existence is mortal.
Donald TAYLOR- Vase 1989
These pieces are not directly used in my composition, yet they are in harmony with reasoningbehind using Greenaway’s Oil Jug.Col LEVYOil Jug 1979These pieces are not directly used in my composition, yet they are in harmony with reasoningbehind using Greenaway’s Oil Jug.
The Gallery’s collection continues to grow through the support of Rockhampton Art Gallery Philanthropy Board, Friends of Rockhampton Art Gallery, and Rockhampton Regional Council, but also generous corporate sponsorship and the support of our vibrant arts community.
Collection Intervention is going to unpack more of this nationally significant collection through the eyes of six contemporary artists practicing in Central Queensland. See a new side of the collection through the Rockhampton Art Gallery curated exhibition Collection Intervention.
