Artemis Fowl (the book) doesn't get enough credit for making you root for Artemis without:

Making him actually secretly the good guy.

Having him act like we should be rooting for him.

Making the fairies unsympathetic to compensate.

There are very few books who have tried to intentionally get us to root for both sides and even fewer who have pulled it off and Artemis Fowl stands among them. Obligatory "Fuck the movie" ending sentence.
