BERIAN the Brave: The jolly, convivial Grand Duke of Roces. Hyperprotective of his people and especially his sons, he is a down-to-earth man who cares deeply for his family. He is counselled by his wife, the Duchess Francesca, as well as the priest-steward of Roces, who represents the interests of the duchy's religious groups.
Lady FRANCESCA: Wife of Berian and mother of his children, the Grand Duchess of Roces is known for an almost preternatural sense of foresight. A strict but not unkind woman, she often intervenes in political matters and prevents her excessively people-minded husband from neglecting the economics and politics of the duchy. There are many who claim that she is the true ruler of Roces.
Prince CEFERINO: The libertine, womanizing eldest son of Berian and Francesca, and heir to Roces. He is known for cavorting with unsavory types like mercenaries and criminals, and for his love of Luvician wine, as well as their women. Nevertheless, when the time comes, it is with his confidence and varied experiences that he will rule Roces.
MARGARETE Marquise of Spears: One of the three rulers of the Council of Valgrandt, the Marquise of Spears presides over the kingdom's considerable military might. Her gentle demeanor hides an incredible strategic mind, and she leads Valgrandt's armies with unflinching, steel-sharp resolve. She was gifted the Rocesi province of Licinius upon her coronation.
Lady MERCEDES: Second cousin to the Marquise of Spears, Lady Mercedes came to Roces to be wed to its prince, Ceferino, and cement the alliance between Valgrandt and the duchy. Nicknamed Mercy, the Sweet-Versed, she is known for her deep knowledge of philosophy, her piousness and her skill in debate. She would fall in love with Ser Israfel, however, and the annulation of her politically-motivated marriage would bring great strife to Roces.
Ser ISRAFEL: A volatile and embittered young mercenary from the remote western province of Aarein. He would meet Prince Ceferino during one of the prince's many nights of revelry, and be made a knight in his service after growing to be close friends. Assigned to protect the recently arrived Lady Mercedes, the two would fall in love and become engaged. War will strike Roces before they are married. His disastrous return to the duchy will lead him to leave Roces and wander east, where he meets the sickly Nuru and her young daughter Maequena.
NURU: A woman of frail health but great wit, Nuru and her daughter Maequena reside in one of the small villages that would be ravaged by the war that strikes Roces. She is highly resourceful, and before her illness struck she worked with trading caravans to peddle wares in the western reaches of the Duchy. She would pass away from illness and be buried on the shore of Saint Ardey's Monastery, despite Israfel and the monks' best efforts to save her.
MAEQUENA: A wild and outspoken young woman, she would encounter Israfel as a youth as he passed through her village, and with no small amount of effort and harassment persude him to take them both to Saint Ardey's Monastery in the east, last hope of saving her ailing mother. After Nuru's passing, she would be left in the care of the monks, but quickly run away to find Israfel again in the village of Brynnevan, where they still live.
