the distinct differences in the ‘separation arcs’ in mp100 and its spinoff are some of the best indicators of reigen’s character development, as well as the differentiation between reigen and tome’s dynamic and reigen and mob’s. in mp100, the separation arc was messy, but a long time coming. mob quit because reigen revealed the ugliest part of himself– the manipulative, jealous, lonely part– and said very hurtful things to mob. at that point, their relationship had become harmful and made entirely of pretense on best, so clashing was inevitable. mob had nothing left to learn, yet he still played student, and reigen had nothing left to teach, yet he still played master. mob stayed because he was used to relying on reigen for stability and advice (the easy way out), and reigen coerced mob into staying because mob was his only genuine human connection (and kept his business afloat). while they do mean a lot to each other, it was at that point that the game of pretend got too strained and too harmful. however, while reigen must’ve known this was true, he didn’t take the separation well, and spiraled damn near immediately because of it. he drank, got so anxious he threw up, worked himself to death, tricked himself into hardcore denial, recklessly walked into a trap and got exposed, and realized he was an incredibly lonely person with no support or connection. ultimately, it was up to him to pick himself up and right his wrongs to the best of his ability, and he was only lucky that mob forgave him (out of genuine care, not any kind of obligation).
