Antique Photograms Stars of the Seas
From 1879 to 1881, German zoologist Ludwig Heinrich Philipp Döderlein went to Japan so he could study marine life there.
He was one of the first European naturalists to work there and eventually began his Siboga expedition. He accumulated early photographs of aquatic creatures – starfishes, sea urchins, crinoids and the like. These are some of his scientific illustrations via photography, hence introducing to the human gaze of what we now call the ‘starfish’.
