learning that addiction is a progressive narrowing of the range of things that make one happy was kinda life changing for me. i apply it to everything not even just addiction i am always checking to ask if i am narrowing my range of happiness or widening it

Been listening to the soundtrack lately and I am struck (once again) at how phenomenal this movie is. This scene especially, and how they meet again years later, show that even when the memories aren’t there, the feelings prevail. I think Taki wrote “I love you” not only because he knew his name would disappear, but also because his name is not what’s important. It’s his feelings, and he wants to Mitsuha to know she’s loved.

As a parent (my whole life lens has changed because of this), I think this sends a strong message about the early years of childhood too. I see people around me trivialize the first 3-5 years of a child’s life because the likelihood of them remembering it is slim to none. But you know what they will remember? They will remember the feelings. Of who loves them, who respects their boundaries, who they have fun with, and who comforts them. It will be ingrained like instinct, something they can’t explain but feel despite how they might reason through it. So yeah, leave your kids with good feelings.

(Not saying you can’t discipline them—absolutely discipline them. They look to you to learn right from wrong. But you hug them, let them know they are always loved. Fuck the cold shoulder shit.)
