Advances in Solar Panel Efficiency in 2019
The Theoretical Limit
Silicon is the most widely used substance in the manufacture of Solar Panels. Its apt properties to generate electricity from light energy and the ready availability of the mineral make it the most viable for large scale production of solar panels. Silicon proves efficient enough to handle the requirements for sustainable production of energy through solar methods. The term efficiency refers to the percentage of input solar energy that is converted wholly to electrical energy. As such, the efficiency of a solar cell is one of the most important parameters when it comes to calculations concerning its viability. The theoretical limit of efficiency for a silicon-based solar cell is around 29 per cent. While this sounds low, it is in fact quite high with respect to other elements. Thus Silicon is the most feasible substance to run Solar Technology on.

By using a specific type of organic crystal instead of silicon, they were able to simultaneously create two pairs of positive and negative energy particles, effectively doubling the energy generated by a single photon. This breakthrough should directly double the efficiency of the solar energy production method. Although the process undergoes numerous losses in the transfer of energy and many other sub-levels, the energy efficiency was calculated to be about 40%.
Conclusion
The experiments on the efficiency of the solar cell are yet to reach their true fruit, but the technology looks to be doing so well, in fact, it is nearing the energy efficiency of combustion based energy generation. The surpassing of the theoretical limit is a major breakthrough that will no doubt benefit the efforts to increase sustainability and its popularity over the polluting side effects of combustion based energy production systems.

Stepping into the light  
The past three years have seen a welcome improvement in the integration of solar panels into grid systems of major and sub-major cities all around the world. There is good news in the fact that some heavily polluted countries such as China and India have doubled their production from Solar Energy in the past year. The change in their energy production methods is a great step toward environmental and ecological sustainability in the future. This has only been possible through years of hard work and dedication toward the environment’s cause. There are still discoveries to be made and places to improve in the field of sustainable engineering, but the steps taken in the right direction finally show more hope for the Earth’s ecology.
Promise of the Spotlight
One of the problems that have popped up in the discipline of solar engineering is the disadvantage caused by air pollution to the production of energy from solar panels. Air pollution has shown to decrease solar efficiency by a staggering 25 percent. The effect is more prevalent in some heavily polluted countries like China, India, and countries in the Arabian peninsula. This is becoming a thorn in the side of the energy departments of these respective countries, leading to hesitation and distrust in the methods of solar energy production. After all, it is obvious that an investment in solar engineering would not be advised if it doesn’t show promise of savings or returns in investment
Only 15 minutes of fame?
To understand the cause of the drop in efficiency, we have to take a look at the substances or ‘grime’ that usually settle on top of solar panels. The grime usually consists of around 91% dust and dirt, and around 9% carbon and ion pollutants that are from man-made chemicals in the atmosphere. Although the dust makes up for most of the grime, the man-made pollutants actually block sunlight a lot more than dust does. Every time grime is cleared off the surface of the solar panel, the panel regains most of the efficiency that it lost. But cleaning the solar panels so often is not advised as they are prone to damage.
Caught staring at the Sun
Assuming a solar panel is cleaned every month, even still a loss of 17 to 25 percent in efficiency occurs after a while in polluted countries. Furthermore, if it is left uncleaned for two months, there is a drastic 25-35 percent drop in efficiency. In Arabian desert countries, efficiency drops mostly due to the dust collected on solar panel surfaces. But in China and India, 80% of the drop occurs due to pollutants in the atmosphere. For India, solar power generation drops to 50% sometimes due to the practice of burning crops in northwestern India. With countries using solar production now more than ever, it will be interesting to find out how these issues will be tackled by the respective countries.

The most basic amenities in a house are usually never talked about. It is now taken for granted that any house has a few must-have electrical appliances that we absolutely can’t live without. They are of course the fan, lights, and lamps. These appliances use Alternating Current(AC) Voltage to run. As we know, the electricity supply to all homes accessing the grid is AC current. As such it may seem convenient to use AC home appliances. Any DC (Direct Current) appliances would require an AC-DC inverter to function.
AC/DC
The reason why AC is preferred over DC for transmission grid-wide is that it is easier to induce changes in its Voltage. It can be used by different appliances within the grid, without causing damage to the appliance or break of the flow of current. There is however much more power loss during transmission for AC, as it is affected by resistive, capacitive and inductive factors. DC is only affected by the resistive factor.

The next step toward sustainability is the integration of both AC and DC systems into the home appliance scene. As DC saves around 30-40% in power consumption, it will be a great step to have some appliances use DC power. This type of integration has seen a breakthrough in recent times with the availability of many appliances that use DC power, either by conversion from AC or by means of other power sources like batteries and solar panels. There are many other added advantages for the use of DC appliances. They are less prone to short-circuit and a shock from a DC source won’t bite as much as an AC source.

For water to be used for consumption, it has to be purified, though. Now, this is something that we know how to do by many, many different methods. As science moves forward, it is necessary to refine the methods we use, auditing our own energy requirements, expenditure and side products to gain in efficiency and cleanliness. As it turns out, some of the more inventive among us have come up with many different ways to introduce solar power into water purification methods.

Portable and Potable
Solar water decontamination system purifies water at the household level. It is based on solar radiation treatment, distillation and solar heating. It is a combination of two water purification processes, the Solar Water Disinfection System and the solar distillation process. Since SODIS is only ideal to disinfect small quantities of micro biologically contaminated water, a solar heated still is added to the system to address the issue of heavily contaminated waters (such as seawater, water with high turbidity and water contaminated by heavy metal or pathogenic microorganisms).
For other cases, contaminated water will be distilled to drinking water using the solar heated still to remove any non-volatile solid impurities such as salts, sediment, heavy metals, and microorganisms. Water from some wells or rivulets may be visibly clear, but it may not be drinkable since the water may still contain pathogenic microorganisms. This contaminated water can be treated by storing it in PET bottles and simply exposing them to direct sunlight, which kills any harmful waterborne pathogens due to its ultraviolet properties. Solar water disinfection is an effective way to disinfect drinking water as it is recommended by the World Health Organization.
This water purification system uses sunlight and is wholly made up of recyclable materials, so it is a fully environmentally sustainable option for purification of water.
