Das kaputte Handy und sein Freund
Ich fahre mit zwei kaputten Handys durch Schottland. Bei Handy Nummer eins ist die Batterie defekt. Man kann ungefähr zehn Minuten sorglos die Uhrzeit ablesen, aber dann bricht es zusammen, vor allem wenn man so anspruchsvolle Dinge plant wie die Kamera anzuschalten. Wenn man es permanent an eine externe Batterie anschließt, funktioniert es dagegen einwandfrei. Handy Nummer zwei hat Probleme mit der Netzanbindung. Man muss eigentlich direkt neben dem Funkmast stehen, und zwar eine halbe Stunde oder so, dann kann man vielleicht ein paar Nachrichten abschicken. Es handelt sich außerdem um ein Handy, das man nicht ein- oder ausschalten kann, weil der Schalter kaputt ist (Kathrin berichtete). Aber ansonsten geht es einwandfrei.
Beide Handys zusammen haben eigentlich alles, was man braucht. Wenn ich im Auto oder stationär bin, schließe ich Handy eins an eine große Batterie an, erzeuge mit ihm einen Hotspot, und gehe dann mit Hilfe dieses Hotspots von Handy Nummer zwei ins Netz. Das Chromebook kann dieses Internet gleich mit verwenden. Wenn ich rumlaufe, ersetze ich die große Batterie durch eine kleine Powerbank (die ich hinterher an der großen Batterie wieder auflade). Es funktioniert einwandfrei. Das Internet entsteht in meinem Rucksack und landet dann auf Umwegen in meiner Jackentasche. Ich darf nur nicht vergessen, es mitzunehmen.

Am Ende des Tages wird die Batterie mit Hilfe der Sonne wieder befüllt.

Mit Hilfe der Sonne, weil ich in meiner Ferienunterkunft für den Strom Geld in Pfundstücken einwerfen muss. Es kostet nicht viel, aber wer hat schon noch Münzen.

Weniger SIM-Karten, mehr Solarpanels
Johannes Mirus hat hier schon 2016 darüber geschrieben, dass es jetzt leichter wird, auch im Ausland Internet zu haben (wegen der wegfallenden Roaminggebühren). Für mich hat es ein paar Jahre länger gedauert. Das lag zum Teil an der schlechten Versorgung der dünn besiedelten Gegenden in Schottland und zum Teil am Brexit (das EU-Roaming umfasst eben nur die EU).
Nachdem Aleks 2013 von Irland zurück nach Schottland gezogen ist, hatte ich verschiedene britische SIM-Karten, seit 2016 war ich bei EE. Um die Karte aufzuladen, sagte ich im Supermarkt an der Kasse "and two separate 10-pound top-up vouchers for EE". Zwei separate, damit ich nicht ganz so sehr von Mobilfunkunternehmen ausgeraubt werden kann, und weil ich auf diese Art manchmal bei der Einreise ins Land noch einen gültigen Aufladebon im Portemonnaie hatte.
Diesmal habe ich die SIM-Karte bei der Einreise nicht gewechselt, weil mir nicht aufgefallen ist, dass das nötig wäre. Es fällt mir auch in den Tagen danach im bisher schlecht mit Mobilfunk versorgten Dorf nicht auf, und auch nicht in den Bergen. Meine deutsche SIM-Karte versorgt mich mit Internet. Es ist nicht überall super, aber auch nicht so schlecht, dass ich Änderungswünsche verspüre. Vielleicht ist die Zeit des SIM-Karten-Wechselns bei der Einreise jetzt endlich auch für mich vorbei.
Außerdem neu in Schottland: Auf mehreren Gebäuden sind Solarpanels zu sehen. Das ist auffällig für mich, weil da bisher keine waren, in Deutschland ist aber alles voll damit seit ... ich weiß es gar nicht mehr und muss im Redaktionschat fragen. Molinarius meint: seit ungefähr 2022. Aleks bestätigt, dass ich die schottischen Solarpanels nicht nur bisher übersehen habe. Sie waren bei meinem letzten Schottlandaufenthalt im Herbst 2024 wirklich noch nicht da. Die Welt verbessert sich dadurch nicht direkt, der Strom stammte in Schottland 2017 schon zur Hälfte aus Windenergie, seit 2022 sind es über 100 Prozent (jedenfalls theoretisch, also Schottland produziert pro Jahr mehr Strom aus Windkraft, als es pro Jahr verbraucht – an einzelnen Tagen ist das nicht unbedingt so). Ich nehme an, es geht bei den Solarpanels hier nur darum, individuell Geld zu sparen oder vom Stromnetz unabhängig zu sein.
Update: Dass man Solarpanels hier seit 2025 sieht, hat wohl mit dem Förderprogramm ECO4 zu tun, dessen aktuelle Version seit Mitte 2022 Solarpanels auf Häusern fördert, die nicht ans Gasnetz angeschlossen sind. Von Mitte 2022 bis Anfang 2025 hat es vermutlich gedauert, die Anträge bewilligt und die Handwerkertermine zu bekommen.
