literally don’t see how you can interpret the end of season 3 to beginning of season 4 as anything other than mike repressing his feelings. el kisses him in front of an open closet and he looks dumbfounded, he and will have a gushy little moment, he goes to the airport and can’t even hug will, they have a fight where he makes it weird by emphasizing that they’re just friends.
not to mention the one way sign into the closet and every other small detail like cmonnnnn. maybe if the ga watched them back to back instead of waiting for a new season it’d be clearer who knows anymore.

people have talked about what kind of scenes that the duffer brothers will have to ease the audience into understanding and noticing byler in s5, @teambyler have listed the perfect flow and scenarios in their post.
but i cant help but think that one of the best ways to show the audience the byler build up is through El's perspective. especially since it would literally kill two birds with one stone (ending any doubts about byler AND ending any narratives that milkvan should be endgame)
okay hear me out on this:
a scene in mike's room where El stumbled upon one of mike's unsent letters to will and discovering that mike had signed then with "love, mike."
a scene where vecna is about to get to will and everyone is scrambling and panicking because apparently music does not work for will. nothing works, not even el can help bring will back and then suddenly joyce tells everyone to shut up and begs mike to talk to will. to tell him to comeback. and it works.
and last, when it comes to mike, the same thing happened, no music is working, el's begging does not work either. and el has to do what joyce did and begged for will to talk mike out of his trance and it works.
el has to witness and experience and connect all the dots by herself that mike and will are in love with each other.
it needs to be shown that el finding out about byler's love does not hurt her the way she thought it would.
it needs to be shown that for El herself, being independent and not defined by who loved her and whom she loved is the best ending for her
and el herself must conclude that will needs mike in the way she doesnt and vice versa for mike
the audience must witness all this through el's eyes so that they will finally see byler and erase any narratives that milkvan should be the endgame
i feel like all these need to happen from el's perspective to squash down any "byler came out of nowhere" and how unfair it would be for el or god forbid portray her to be a pitiful victim

if they really are the main couple of the show then there should be NO DOUBT as to whether they're happening or not. but that's not what's happening, is it? 😳

Simple question that answers as proof too:
If each character were to be paired off like on the hill in the ending season blocking, who would have an alternate person to paired with than the love triangle and who wouldn't?
If El isn't ending with Mike in that image, Max and Hopper are both options.
At best, Will has his mom, but she hasn't honestly been a focal relationship since season 1. He's been closer with Jonathan but not in a way that they've been a "duo" in any way. He just has Mike.
And the question behind the question is, really, once, again, Will has not only not had screentime dedicated to other love interest options, but he has not had screentime dedicated to anyone else. Season 2 he was with Mike. Season 3 it was Mike then when it couldn't be Mike...nothing (but in blocking and background work, still Mike). In season 4, it was Mike.
The difference between Will and El is they put all Will's eggs in one basket. ALL of them. I can't think of another person it'd make sense for him to stand with. While others' screen time is divided between say Will and El or Mike and Max, Will's is divided between Mike and the Upside Down. THIS is his story. Screentime tells us it always has been. There are 0 setups for any other outcome. There's nowhere to pull from for an alternate ending. They gave themselves no outs from the start because they knew where they were going.

As a follow-up to my recent post about Mike's "love" declaration, I want to share how I think Henry might use it to divide and conquer our big 3 of El, Will, and Mike.
We've already seen hints in the BTS stuff that suggests Will is plagued with visions early on. While this could mean that Henry is making a play on getting to him, I think it's actually a ruse. What I think this could be is a gambit on his part to reveal to El the romantic tension between Will and Mike.
As I've said before, Henry knows how Will feels about Mike. It's questionable whether he has any idea on how Mike feels, but that's not necessary here for him to make devious use of this information. He just needs to plant a seed of doubt in El's mind that she can trust her brother and boyfriend. Since neither of them is likely to ever say a word about this situation, Henry needs El to see it for herself. To do this, she needs El to go into Will's mind and see his memories.
Picture it: Will starts getting visions, much like Henry's victims from season 4. The Party, especially Lucas, are understandably freaked out by this turn of events once they realize it. They make Will have a walkman handy at all times. They try to not let him be alone. Mike especially would try to be by his side as much as possible. This by itself would be enough to cause a little bit of strain on Mike and El's relationship. As she is in hiding, she would already not get to see Mike very much. She wouldn't blame Will, of course, but it would get the ball rolling on Henry's plan. It would make her want even more to get Will free of danger.
Once Henry feels the time is right, he makes his move. He hits Will with a huge vision, one that makes it seem like he's about to be killed. Henry does not plan to do this, of course, as he has bigger plans for Will, but he needs everyone, especially El, to believe it to be the case. El enters his mind to try to force Henry out. Following the advice of Lucas and Dustin, Will is trying to hide in his happy memories. Naturally, they highly revolve around Mike, and El is subsequently clued into every major Byler moment that has previously been more or less private between Mike and Will, including some flashbacks that even the audience hasn't seen before.
Will is "saved" once Henry decides she's seen enough. It's only the first phase of his plan, of course. He still has to manipulate things so that Mike stays by Will's side while El is busy fighting him and his monster army. Then he needs to crush Mike's spirit, so he is unable to help either of them through what Henry has planned.
But the seed is planted, and El starts to wonder.

mike completely missed the fact that will’s painting had been from him since the beginning, despite el having said in one of her letters that will is always painting, I think for someone he likes.
that’s because mike never really paid attention to el’s letters, and has always paid attention to will’s art. there are multiple scenes of mike crumpling the letters and throwing them away carelessly and there are many scenes of mike cherishing the art, looking through the binder.
mike’s actual girlfriend indirectly told mike that will is in love with him but mike broke his own heart thinking otherwise, just because he wasn’t paying attention to his own girlfriend in the first place.
quite the irony, huh?

if mlvn is supposed to be the main romance of the show, the no. 1 couple, why would the writers save their big i love you moment for a scene where there is so much distraction
there is so much going on here. el choking, mike shifting around and hesitating, will in the background, light flickering, multiple cuts to jonathan and argyle
and then of course the fact that el is in vecnas mind space which is visually displeasing. it's red, bloody looking, thunder is crashing, the vines are squelching, el is crying, max is dying, and also the depressing music conveniently titled "You're The Heart."
there is SO MUCH HAPPENING!! this moment is supposed to be about el and mike, but it couldn't be farther from that.
and for people saying "well that's just what was happening in the moment!", this isnt real life. the story can be literally whatever the duffers want it to be. they could've written the scene differently so there was more tenderness, intimacy, gentleness, emotion. they could've found time for mike and el to have a sweet moment to themselves where he apologizes, and then when el is choking she simply remembers that moment and all of her memories with mike over the years. but nope, it just had to be the other way.
this scene is an example of exactly how to create intimacy between 2 characters in a scene with multiple other people. they made sure to do it a specific way to build will and mike's relationship.
when joyce is talking to will, jonathan is standing in the background for most of it. they also cut to mike and hopper watching. we are reminded there are others in the shed. they cut to will multiple times as joyce talks.
this next thing may sound insignificant, but it's not. they cut to jonathan BEFORE he starts speaking. he watches will for a second, then starts talking about the day lonnie left. then it immediately cuts to joyce, before cutting back to jonathan kneeling down in front of will. as jonathan talks there are shots of just jonathan, jonathan and joyce, and will listening.
they saved mikes for last. every writer knows whatever comes last will have the most impact.
when mike starts speaking, will is still looking at jonathan. wills head shoots towards mike. only after that do we see mike, and he's already crying.
they don't cut away from mike until he says "you were just swinging by yourself" it cuts to will then. then we're back to mike, and it doesn't cut until he's done talking.
there's no music, no flickering, no one else making noise or talking. there's no noise besides mike speaking, will breathing, and crickets outside. it sounds oxymoronic to say this, but the crickets only emphasize how silent it is in the shed besides mike. it's so silent and calm in there that you can hear the crickets. you can barely see anything behind mike, it's just his face illuminated by the light. mike isn't yelling, he's talking softly. this is gentle. intimate.

then it cuts back to will, and he looks more emotional than he has this whole time they've been trying to break through to him. his eyes are red and glossy, his breaths are shuddering as he looks at mike, like he's about to break and cry.
when it cuts to joyce, it's jarring. it tears wills eyes from mike. because at this point we've completely forgotten that there are other people in the room. it's like mike and will are in their own little bubble, like they're the only two people in the world. go and rewatch the full scene, its striking how different mikes monologue to will is shot compared to the others. it suddenly feels so much more intimate and emotionally intense.
and it doesn't, not for a SECOND, lead you to believe mike is hesitant or struggling to tell the truth. it's like the words are spilling straight out of mikes heart into will's. he does not have to be pushed into this or encouraged. the moment jonathan was done talking mike knew exactly what he wanted to say, and he was already so emotional he was crying.
it's coming from him. from his heart.
looking at joyce

looking at jonathan

looking at mike.

and to any deniers here saying all of this is just because of wills feelings for mike..
that's cruel.
that's actually cruel.
it would be DIABOLICAL for the writers to give byler such a sweet emotional moment like this just for it to end in a character who's already on the struggle bus being completely heartbroken. that is straight up cruel to will.
and it would also be queerbaiting lolz
and before you go, quick question. can you imagine THIS mike avoiding wills hug?
i highly doubt it.

i need them to write byler well i need them to be able to have enough screentime to get a proper breakdown of how they work as a team to find holly, how will is an anchor for mike about his sister and i need it to finally come up and for them to TALK ABOUT how it felt for mike when will went missing. i want will to say he always felt like it was his own fault that it happened to him and for mike to not know what he means, and to tell him the only thing that was his fault was the fact that he survived, because he was brave and smart enough to evade a demogorgon.
i just DONT want a kiss that feels forced in the way the mileven love confession was, like i have to do this to save this person, or they're going to die, before it's a climax of anything they've suggested at. i need to see mike realise and start to be tormented by his confusion and feelings for will once he cant be distracted by el anymore. (and i think they're going to get that out of the way quite early on, and i want to see el get her own independent character development.)
i ALSO want a "you're real? you're real" moment after the kiss, because they're both scared they're getting vecna'd and this is a vision and as a callback to the real food/fake food thing. but most of all i want it to be a kiss that feels safe, and not spurred by fear or in confirmation of anything. just a kiss because they both wanted to kiss each other.
