the thing that makes angus mcdonald so delightful as a character is like.

a child detective is a common enough trope for *protagonists*. it's a genre convention, you don't question it (especially if you yourself are a child when you read/watch those stories, because they're generally aimed at kids)

but seeing that trope in a side character, especially when the protagonists are all adults and the story is aimed at adults, just puts into focus how absolutely buckwild that trope concept is

I’m so mad about the very beginning of Petals to the Metal when Lucretia was asking the boys if they’d ever been to Goldcliff, but Merle and Taako were like “most of the places we’ve been to aren’t there anymore!” Like, they’ve said plenty of bullshit that’s turned out to be accidentally heartbreaking in hindsight, but this one just had to be in front of the one person in the world who would recognize the irony.
