How to Cope With Work-Related Anxiety
How to Cope With Work-Related Anxiety
U.S. News and World Reportwriter Ruben interviewed me for a story on work-related anxiety for the magazine’s consumer health focus.  I appreciate opportunities to talk about what Freud called “the psychology of everyday life.”  There’s a lot we can understand about the psychological pressures we are all subject to at work and in relationships without veering into the realm of psychopathology.  In…

Why the Concept of Retirement is Destructive and Needs to be Replaced
Why the Concept of Retirement is Destructive and Needs to be Replaced
This article was originally published on Forbes.com in August 2018.  It is the first of a series of blog posts that will reflect the work I am very excited to be doing on a forthcoming book, Starting Older.
Ask any successful, engaged 65-year-old, “Are you ready to withdraw from life?”
The words “retire” and “retirement” derive from the French retirer, meaning to withdraw.  The common definition…

Webinar: How to Understand and Plan For the New Retirement
Webinar: How to Understand and Plan For the New Retirement
This is an introduction to ideas I am working on for a new book.  There is a new life stage–I call it “starting older” –that didn’t exist for previous generations. I was really pleased to present on this topic for the Northwestern Alumni Association Career webinar series.  In my view, the traditional vision of retirement is obsolete–not a useful concept for most people who are in the…

Papa John's Faces a PR--and a Moral--Crisis. What Should They do Next?
Papa John’s Faces a PR–and a Moral–Crisis. What Should They do Next?
I had the opportunity to write a piece for commPRO.biz, an online publication for communications professionals. Crisis management always involves assessing the company’s capacity for empathy with those who have been injured by its behavior. In this case, there is an empathy deficit that needs to be bridged by outside consultation. Read the piece here.

Quick physical intervention stopped violent intentions; could it stop violence? (CNN.com July, 2018)
Quick physical intervention stopped violent intentions; could it stop violence? (CNN.com July, 2018)
CNN’s Jen Christensen reports on a study that suggested that trans-cranial electrical stimulation of the prefrontal cortex might inhibit someone’s intention to commit a violent act.  I comment on the intriguing implications and the practical problems that would be involved.  My colleague Dr. Jesse Viner, founder and medical director of Yellowbrick Consultation and Treatment Center is also…

Webinar June 7 at 12 noon "How to Understand and Plan for the New Retirement"
Webinar June 7 at 12 noon “How to Understand and Plan for the New Retirement”
Thursday, June 7 12:00 – 1:00 pm
I’m excited to be presenting a webinar to Northwestern alumni, family and friends about a “new” life stage I call “Starting Older.”  For most 65-year-olds the old model of retirement is obsolete. It is often a time for a major career pivot, but those of us in this phase of life still have 15 to 20 years of productivity in us.  What do we do now?  Tune in to the…

Why Inspiring Trust And Trusting Others Are Essential Leadership Capacities (Within Bounds)
This is the first of two posts related to trust, one of the five essential capacities of cognition and character that a leader who shoulders great responsibility must have. These were originally published Forbes online.  This post explains why trust is a crucial capacity, how it has to be regulated and what happens when it is absent. The next post offers suggestions on the assessment of trust.…

10 Things We Keep Getting Wrong About Gun Violence: Especially when it comes to mental health
10 Things We Keep Getting Wrong About Gun Violence: Especially when it comes to mental health
It can’t be said often enough:  the vast majority of gun violence incidents cannot be linked to mental health diagnoses.  I’m all for more resources for mental health treatment and training but they will do nothing to decrease our epidemic of gun violence.  Only decreasing access to guns will.  Pleased to be quoted in a great article by Huffington Post’s Lindsay Holmes.  Read it here.
