I can never listen to right where you left me again without thinking about how Brittany just sat there for all of season 4, all of her closest friends having graduated, and her best friend and lover broke up with her. Like, she was stuck in that classroom, which happens to be where her and Santana's relationship developed and also ended. That must have hurt a lot.
She may have been held behind, sure, but when Santana ended things with her, she was left utterly alone. Sure, she still had her new directions friends, but they weren't close enough to understand her, to get her. Later on, she started dating Sam, but to me, it felt more out of necessity than out of love. Because when you think about it, the reason Brittany liked Sam was because he made her laugh. She felt lonely and left behind, Santana told her it was fine to date other people; obviously she was going to go to the only person who kind of understood her (the whole dumb blond plot). I still don't get why the writers went for a blam relationship instead of a cute friendship, though, but that's on me.
I'm also still mad at the writers for not exploring more Brittany's feelings or jealously or anything that wasn't comedic relief (looking at you, cutting off "Dancing on my own" on the diva episode but still having Finn kissing Emma…). I don't know, Santana's reason for breaking up —not wanting to end up like one of those couples whose needs aren't met and they start hating each other— seemed like a mature decision at the moment. But in breaking up, they still hurt each other quite a lot, and their friendship faded (they basically didn't communicate, Santana didn't know about blam nor did Britanny know Santana dropped out of college).
Not to mention, Santana literally learned that same day that she was hurting Brittany and promptly decided to jump ship. She didn't even know about Brittany's depression crash-out on Britney 2.0. And we didn't get to hear Brittany's thoughts on the breakup before she was getting paired up with Sam. I would have loved to have them talk about it more, because their breakup felt quite one-sided.
I know they eventually ended up together (thanks goodness), but there was a potential that I wish they would have explored instead of breaking up all the main couples for a breaking up episode.
