Pools

I think Pools is trying to portray a feeling of love, possibly an uncontrollable innocent feeling of first love but also it’s probably based on a concreate story. It’s way more upbeat than other songs. There are some lyrics that hit hard. 

“I smile before I want to, I smile because you want to” When you’re in love sometimes you get this burst of happiness and you smile, sometimes you smile around that person and can’t even talk, you just stare at them and smile.

“Shake my little soul for you now, toy

And I settle up into a world of noise

I’m a man of many tricks and tools and joy

With a battery of guilt on which to poise”

This chorus feels mature, there are some bad properties in almost every person, I feel like it’s saying “I am a man with quirks and some bad sides”. It may also be a very sad lyric,

“Shake my little soul for you now, toy

And I settle up into a world of noise”

can be a depressive statement wrapped in this happy song, there is something not right, but you still entertain the relationship, you accept the unknown and lean into it and maybe you know it’s not right but you’re in love.

“Down by the shore, a funny foal

Who bit my wings and ate 'em whole”

I have no idea about this second verse, It might be some sort of trauma bonding but I feel like it’s something personal. GA probably had a story in mind when they were writing this song.

“You left before I got to”

Might mean something like “You saved your emotions and disregarded mine, you moved on before I did” or some kind of sudden end to the relationship.

Black Mambo

In Black Mambo:

“What'll it be now, Mr. Mole? Whispers sloth in curls of smoke”

The two characters are a mole and a sloth playing a game of dominos. I interpreted this song as a poetic, although somewhat childish and over romanticized representation of a capitalistic society. I would like to hear what anyone reading this thinks the sloth represents. Maybe something like opportunity. The mole represents a working class.

“Take a back seat, or play pharaoh” is a call to action, a sort of “Will you rise up or keep playing by the rules”. The choice of the animals is also interesting, a mole, like an annoying skin growth. An annoyance to the rich. The sloth feels important too but I’m not 100% on it just yet.

“Slow down, it's a science He's been waiting to bring you down Snake-eyed, with a sly smile He can hold you and shake you, child”

feels like a saying to keep the players (people) in the game. It feels ironic, “Slow down, you won’t make it overnight” they say and let us keep playing in the rigged game while they bend the rules. The other 3 lines are to strike fear into the players, “don’t fight it, you’ll get hurt.”

“Leopards laze each on plush pillows Slender capes of red and chrome Paperback dreams in their deep doze Twitch their toes to black mambo”

Leopards are the rich, they lay on plush pillows in the middle of the jungle, they have simplistic or paperback dreams despite being so high up. “Twitch their toes to black mambo” should be either a self-reference or a reference to the dance “black mambo” which is an old Cuban dance used in classical ball dances. Maybe a hint to the world leaders being elderly and old fashioned.

“"Wanna play cheat now?" says the sloth A domino flush to his nose Tickle that cheek and take your throne Pump your veins with gushing gold”

and the rest of the song feels like a process of corruption, a person who has finally made it and is being corrupted and influenced by others:

“We can hold you We can hold you…”

ZABA is my favorite album from glass animals. I think I read somewhere its based on two books: The Zabajaba Jungle and The Island of Doctor Moreau.

The following is my interpretation and its gonna be spread out over at least 11 posts because each song hit my heart and I felt GA really expressed masculinity and other deep concepts in a way in which you can feel the same emotions in the songs, not just having those emotions described to you, either I am overanalyzing or ZABA is a highly intelligent masterpiece of an album. I would like to talk about other songs in the future, not entire albums. Some of the songs in the other three albums carry the ZABA vibe and message.

In Flip:

“Here's to the one with the smoking stare Runnin' through my head with a bolo knife Choppin' up the threads made up from looms”

The lyrics refer to the boy from The Zabajaba Jungle moving through the forest and cutting down the foliage. The jungle is a metaphor for a mind of a man, I think its more of a tease for the other songs but the song Flip itself to me is a representation of how a man feels after his first break up.

“Making a cocoon when my brain fits” struck a chord, that feeling of hate you get towards everything and everyone around you, even your best friends, you start to think everyone hates you or is using you, the rage you must contain. In reality you start to build this cocoon around you, and you are the one who is becoming more of an asshole to everyone. I do find that you are way more resilient to manipulation in that state of mind though.  

“I wanna go back I wanna go back I wanna go back with a club and attack I wanna take to my guns and break you I gotta make my little foe take his own”

I think this is a representation of the primal rage you feel in that moment, you start to hate ideas like going to the club and seeing anyone happy brakes you.

“I was in full bloom until I met you I'm gonna shake my fetters I'm breaking loose”

First you resent the person for making you feel the way you feel but also you get a strong muscular urge to grow and become so strong, rich, good-looking and irreplaceable that you feel alive and conscientious.

A WORLD OF NOISE: THE ZABAJABA JUNGLE

ZABA by Glass Animals is 10 YEARS OLD TODAY.

A poem/stream of consciousness I wrote about ZABA on a rainy September night in 2022, one month after seeing Glass Animals live. ZABA was the album by which I found Glass Animals in 2018, and its abstract yet visceral nature continues to fascinate me. The more I listened, the more I felt I could understand the imagery drawn across its 11 tracks.

Essentially, I believe ZABA can be understood as a Queer reading and apologue of Plato’s allegory of the cave. There are many lines that allude to a (Queer) awakening from perceived societal constraints such as in Walla Walla (“it’s a ruse, all these creatures are a lie” & “i clap my hand and they’re gone into the night”), likely referencing the shadows projected by the puppet showmen in Plato’s allegory. Thus, the anguish expressed in songs predating ZABA’s release such as in Golden Antlers and in Exxus are symptomatic of a speaker trapped in a cave, unable to escape a deeper feeling of unease because they are only seeing the reality projected to them by a cisheteronormative system. It is only when the speaker escapes this metaphorical cave in Flip, the opening track of ZABA, (“I’m gonna shake my fetters / I’m breaking loose”), that they finally enter the confusing, overwhelming, but beautiful and fluid “world of noise” mentioned in Pools (and sonically created in Intruxx). Over the course of ZABA, the speaker wrestles with their preconceived notions of reality (Walla Walla uses a ton of imagery from The Matrix), relationships, gender, and sexuality, while simultaneously feeling betrayed by their family and society (Hazey and Toes).

The B-Side of ZABA dips into existential dread, as the speaker mourns the time they lost to the incomplete reality they had accepted in the cave, and the effects it had on their mental health (Wyrd), climaxing in Cocoa Hooves, as the speaker (or someone else), confronts them(selves) and the changes they have undergone in the ZABAJABA jungle. The speaker must choose if they wish to stay in the confusing yet euphoric jungle, or self-destruct (“set [their] wings on fire”) and return to the cave after flying too close to the sun and after indulging too deeply in their primal instinct. However, just as the freed prisoner in Plato’s allegory, the speaker runs the risk of never being able to live in blissful ignorance again, as their eyes may never re-adjust to the incomplete, crafted reality of the cave.

The last track of the album, JDNT, presents a conclusion as ambiguous as the title Dave refuses to explain. It is possible the speaker is accepting their doomed fate as prophecized to them by the antagonist in Wyrd, or radically accepting their outcast status, enjoying the “life untamed.” And perhaps, in the end, they triumph over their internal turmoil by recognizing it only has power over them if they allow it to, as it cannot “breathe without [them].” And thus, they return to the Earth, unfettered and born anew.

Maybe I'll make my own OC inspired by GA songs, Wyrd and Toes have a creepy psychedelic vibe. Toes is describing a characther desperate to have his humanity acknowledged or at least that's how I interprete it. I also see Wyrd as describing a more sadistic side of that same character after "we" or whoever the character from toes was talking to, tries to escape his island. Again that's how I interprete the songs.
