For the last goddamn time...

"Kill your darlings" means "if something is holding you back, get rid of it, even if it sounds pretty."

That's it! That's all it means! It means if you're stuck and stalled out on your story and you could fix the whole block by removing something but you're avoiding removing that thing because it's good, you remove that thing. That's the darling.

It does NOT mean

That you have to get rid of your self-indulgent writing

That you should delete something just because you like it (?wtf?)

That you need to kill off characters (??? what)

That you have to pare your story down to the absolute bare bones

That you have to delete anything whatsoever if you don't want to

The POINT is that you STOP FEELING GUILTY for throwing out good writing that isn't SERVING THE STORY.

The POINT is that you don't get so HUNG UP on the details that you lose sight of the BIG PICTURE.

Good grief....

when my shelter cat passes by me, he pauses for a second, and looks up. He is waiting for me to lean down, and touch my hand against his side, so that when he keeps walking, my hand skims across his fur. he doesn't really need attention. he has his own thoughts and plans. but after more than a year of living in our home, he has come to expect a moment of kindness whenever he crosses my path. if I don't do it, he will follow me. "where is your hand?" he asks, with his plaintive and impatient eyes. I give it to him. he bumps against it like a balloon before wandering away. this is a poem to me

Zipcomics is where I read all my Batman comics it’s got way less ads than the other options so use it if ya want. they have semantic urls so it’s easy to see what’s what. I think if you know the basic Batman info there’s no pre-requisites for jumping in to the good stuff, the comics add “this is because I am Batman, Bruce Wayne, tragically orphaned” in the narration boxes anytime it’s needed for a first time reader LOL

what is the longest string of story adaptations you know of. like an album inspired by a movie inspired by a play inspired by a another play or something

Imagine being a patient of Hannibal’s but you just received actual therapy and then took his advice and you’re thriving, but then it comes out that almost all his patients killed at least one person I’d start wondering what was so wrong with me that he didn’t try to harness the dark urges within me, why wasn’t I worth shaping into a furry killer or some unsettling little freak with psychosexual tendencies? I’d need extensive therapy after.

and before you’re so quick to judge him, hannibal did accept medicaid which is why i got into his practice in the first place. and i’m just saying like yeah, he did manipulate several of his patients into murdering other people, but i’ve been looking into it and none of them seem to have been any of his low-income patients. and some of them were like literally the FBI? idk i’m gonna watch how this story develops before i’m totally against him

i actually did have one therapy session with hannibal. we talked about my goals and he told me that we weren’t a good fit because he actually doesn’t have much experience treating OCD and he thought i would be more successful at a better specialized practice. he gave me a referral to someone who primarily treats OCD with ERP and other evidence-based therapies. i’ve always been extremely grateful to him for that. a lot of therapists would’ve dismissed me out of hand or worse, tried to treat me anyway and made me worse.

yeah i saw on the news last night that he’s been killing and eating people. but if you ever experienced trying to find informed OCD care you’d get why i’m hesitant to throw the baby out with the bath water. i think a man can be a cannibal murderer and also a compassionate medical professional and i think this conversation would benefit moving forward if we allow that nuance

its fascinating when shows go "this character does not have sex" and you can just watch the fans minds just start going "well he doesnt have sex, therefore hes asexual, and as we all know, asexuality is a spectrum, and some asexuals actualy do have sex, and therefore he is probably having tons of crazy sex literaly every time he isnt on screen"
