In my opinion, Bashir's way of talking makes it seem like he was always smug towards Garak (he never talks to his superiors and officers that way). However, he did talk to O'Brien like that for a while, probably because O'Brien is the chief sergeant, not a commissioned officer. After they got to be friends, Bashir talks more casually to the chief.

In South Korea's military, they have a strict way of speaking based on rank, so the subtitles seem to be translated accordingly.

The thing is, Bashir has been talking to Garak in that way until the show ended, and Garak always used polite language. That is why Korean Niners became obsessed with it. There's thousands of stories........

I was thinking abt the moment Bashir started talking impolitely to Garak—which did not appear in canon—and why there is no fanfic about that moment...

Which is so trivial, since there's no such distinction of speech in English😂😂 Why am I the one who has to write it
