What is My IP and Why Should I Check My IP Address?
If you have ever had an Internet problem, you most likely asked yourself, "Check my IP address." Maybe you typed the domain name or IP address into a web browser and were met with an error message. Maybe you noticed that the IP address was changing without you really even noticing it. Perhaps you were surfing online and got a notice that your IP was changed. Whatever the case may be, you have come to the right place for answers to your question, "Check my IP address."
What to do: Type the domain or IP address you are interested in into the box above, then click on the Locate IP Address link. You must surely be wondering, "Why should I know what my IP address is?" One good reason to know what your IP is; is to help your ISP or Internet service provider when troubleshooting technical problems with your email. They can check your domain or IP to see what software is causing the problem; and then correct it for you. Also, if you are having Internet problems and you don't know the domain or IP, your host will be able to tell you this information for you as well.
Why do I need to check my IP address? If you are using the Internet and you have ever experienced a problem with it that you cannot understand; you will need to know your IP to figure out where the problem is coming from. This is also important if you are trying to get into a secure area of the Internet, such as the Internet cafe. There might be several computers all offering different IP addresses and you want to choose the one that is closest to where you are coming from.
Where is my IP address? In the US the address consists of eight digits, consisting of seven letters A-F. An IP can be represented as a hex value; a number that can be compared to any other number.
Why is this used? Most Internet Service Providers (ISPs) use this method to determine which computer is best for downloading a certain file or web page. Each Internet Service Provider has its own list of approved sub-domain names; in other words, the server which the client uses to connect to the Internet is assigned an IP address by the ISP. Each domain name represents a unique numerical IP address. From these addresses the server is able to tell the computer where to send data packets for downloading a page or application onto the client's computer.
So, why do I need to check my IP? Well, if you have ever been scammed or received an email that appears to be from someone you know, you might want to know your IP. It is also a good idea to check who is emailing you; or perhaps who your spouse is chatting with. The worst scenario is someone using your computer to send out a virus to infect your system and cause you to lose your private information; so, by knowing your IP you can prevent that from happening.
