I would like to partially blame VICE Deutschland (and the years I spent producing video for them) for brainwashing me into thinking Surf Berlin was a fairytale made for Pinterest. Though, I do have to thank them for waking me up to the fact that documentaries can never be complete honest (one reason why I’m currently so passionate about inventing a new ultra-honest documentary film genre. Anyways, today I’m posting this re-worked film trailer because I’d like to finally start to come out of the closet about the truth about Surf Berlin (at least to those of you who’ve yet to see a rough cut of the film). Back when I went in to be interviewed by Vice. I was so excited to finally tell "the press" about how MY MOM was mostly to thank for the success of the project. Just as I was getting deep into the project and finally feeling like I might catch the wave soon, I ran out friends who would film (I don’t blame them. It’s not easy being outside all day in the middle of German winter). Though, I didn’t let that stop me. I’d go out there anyway, alone, leaving the camera on the tripod and hoping it would magically film me catch the wave of my life. Or if I was lucky a random tourists was passing by and they got the job. When my mom heard the project was falling apart and that I was getting desperate, she flew to Berlin within a week, learned how to use a camera, and for three stressful weeks kept my spirits up, and helped me shoot the film until we finally caught “something” good enough to call it “quits” (more on that later). Sadly, though not surprisingly, the Vice article mentioned nothing of my mom’s valiant efforts (of which was about 90% of what I talked about during that interview). So, yesterday I finally found a way to sneak her into the trailer so that it’ll be harder for future press to avoid the fact that my mom was the cinematographer (and yes she’s in the film don’t worry, she’ll likely be the first person you see on the silver screen). She deserves it. I love you mom.

A few weeks ago I got a surprise phone call from an anonymous journalist. The fact that the journalist managed to get my number from a complete stranger wasn’t what surprised me, but rather, that she wanted to interview me about Surf Berlin.
It’d been a while since I posted anything about the project, and I’d actually recently been planning to give an update on the progress of the film, so, I took this request as an opportunity to let everyone know that I’m still editing Surf Berlin (or at least that I’ve been channeling the universe to edit the film for me).
Within minutes of the phone call we began our nature hike through Berlin. This is more or less what happened. ;-)
Thank you Jessica Camille Aguirre for the beautifully hilarious story. And Sam Woolley for the fucking gorgeous illustration.

In 2007, because of my success with The Balloon Project, I was asked to start the video production team at Vice Magazine in Berlin. While most of my two years with the magazine wasn’t awe-inspiring, the three hours I spent in this guys’ apartment was up there on that list next to getting to go inside The Large Hadron Collider. Before we could even get to asking the first question he began playing a song. But not just any song. This song lasted almost 20 minutes. I can’t remember the last time my hands hurt some much from holding something.
Fun fact: The picture of him playing in the snow almost didn’t make the final cut. They thought 50 Euros was too much for a picture. When I told them I’d pay the 50 from my own pocket, they changed their mind.
